Byrne and Glenn TOK Twitter Chat #toknisbett Student “Grows” and “Glows”

  1. 1. #toknisbett chat feedback Page 1 Byrne and Glenn TOK Twitter Chat #toknisbett Student “Grows” and “Glows” Glows Grows  Transitions  Questions during an awkward silence  Twitter chat was awesome  Teacher involvement  I like how we involved technology  Didn’t get lost because teachers kept on track  Smooth transitions  Our conversations could develop more if given more time.  Everyone knew what everyone was saying  Almost everyone spoke  The mixed classes and 3 groups  Very interactive  Everybody’s point of view taken into account  I really liked that we were able to use Twitter to share ideas while in the outer circle.  Overall a good idea.  I really liked using Twitter to keep the outer circle involved; it was also a really good medium to use for an easy way to react.  Twitter provided questions when there were awkward pauses.  Teachers were involved to help w/ seminar process when needed.  Dr. Glenn’s ponytail and profile pic  Student led convos  Allowed students to show what they know.  I liked the Twitter conversations.  I liked being able to participate in the Twitter conversations while on the outside circle.  When Dr. Glenn took out his ponytail  Everyone’s thoughts were very interesting to me  People going in more and not allowing people that didn’t speak to speak  People should be encouraging to ask people who aren’t talking so they can participate  Big circle with everyone might be a suggestion (eliminate the inner circle)? Still keep Twitter, though.  Involve Twitter (the stream/comments) more into group  Smaller groups and give assigned “topic” so can think beforehand and make questions (one or other). Thank you!  We did nothing with the Tweets.  Dominated by a few.  More time for the inner circle because I think we felt rushed and gives more opportunities for people to speak.  Specific topics for the inner circle to talk about.  More centralized/relevant Twitter position (the screen with the feed)  Need more organization/planning  More time  I would like a better system of sharing because some people talked so long and some people did not get to share.  Stay on a topic until everyone has said what they wanted to.  The questions that got Tweeted usually didn’t get brought up in the inner circle. I think it was an issue with only part of the circle being able to see feed.  Some of the best input/questions on Twitter were ignored  Limit the time individuals speak because they might take all ideas and no one interrupts because it’s rude  Longer people didn’t get to really dive into
  2. 2. #toknisbett chat feedback Page 2 Glows Grows  It was engaging  The Twitter feed was really cool  The ability to comment anytime  Inner circle discussion  I really liked the comparison of having a silent outer (circle) who responds online  I liked the whole Twitter thing  Interesting activity for a more debatable question rather than just constant agreement  Fun  Very fun  Ability to Tweet during the discussion  Liked setup of discussion  I liked the use of Twitter involving the seminar  I liked how the proctors would Tweet a question to keep the conversation flowing  I liked how Dr. Glenn put his ponytail down  The tchat.io website was helpful in getting all the #toknisbett Tweets in one place  It was nice and comfortable having the circles close and being able to do the activity with both classes.  Love the open endedness of the Socratic Seminar  I love how we were able to Tweet our ideas on a big screen  LOVE the fact that we received another opportunity to speak in the Socratic seminar  I liked how we all got the opportunity to talk either verbally or via Tweet  I liked the ideas and the ability to be heard  I enjoyed hearing different perspectives and intermingling with a larger (thus more diverse) group  I liked being able to choose going in or not @ the end (see last bullet)  Tweeting made it great because there was shouting out yet people like Hannah didn’t feel restricted  Liked how the inner circle worked  It was nice to have the laptops an issue because of limited time  Some people never spoke  Provide more times letting us know how much time we have left  The inner circle should include what’s being said in the Twitter conversation more.  The Twitter feed could happen the night before and then during the seminar; the center group could just go through the Twitter feed and discuss and answer questions. That way, more of the interesting points on the Twitter feed and there would be less repetition in the discussion.  Limit the number of questions that are posed on Twitter  Tweets not really talked about because of the full discussion of the inner (circle). Maybe respond only to Twitter discussion.  I ended up writing all of my questions on Twitter; parking lot=moot  Moving onto new topics faster  10 minutes is very short  Groups were unequally assigned (C having a LOT more)  Encourage the inner circle to speak louder  Difficult to transition from message board to Twitter and vice-versa  Difficult to view the projector from some angles  I would change the way the 1st question was introduced that started the discussion  Control the influx of Tweets  Limit how much one person talks so that everyone has enough time to talk  People did not address Tweets so when there are awkward pauses in the inner circle the inner circle should use the Tweets to help keep the conversation going  Sometimes the inner circle went off topic or did not answer the question (they should pay more attention to the conversation)
  3. 3. #toknisbett chat feedback Page 3 Glows Grows  People Tweeting were more focused on Tweeting something rather than responding to the conversation  No one referred to the feed  Feed was only filled with questions but no comments  Although we have a big class, maybe we should give us more time in the seminar  Maybe we should go over Socratic etiquette  We should bring in a bigger audience for more fun and awesomeness  I think we should do something about the Tweets  It seemed rushed; let 1 group go a day but make it detailed  The Tweeting was often WAY off topic and then the Tweets that were ON topic were not visible on the screen  Maybe discuss before the circle good aspects of debate because so frequently people “asked” a question that actually was a statement but they added “isn’t it true” or something similar  I didn’t like the set groups w/ a time; it made conversation less natural and some people couldn’t participate if they didn’t have a strong opinion on the topic. I wish we had a “tap out”/replace option to swap w/ one another on the outside and no timer  There were too many tweets being shot out that they were never discussed  Hard for people without Twitter to stay in the loop; maybe make fake one?  I wasn’t there but was able to follow along a little bit at home because of the hashtags!  Nice discussion  Interactive  Projecting Tweets on the screen  Good set up/location  Fun  Using Twitter to ask questions was a good  We couldn’t really see the discussion board so it wasn’t used much for inner circle conversation (excluding outer circle)  Smaller groups because everybody wanted to talk at the same time and couldn’t get their points across  When I wanted to say something, it was hard to put it in a Tweet. I wish the center circle could look at the Tweets on the
  4. 4. #toknisbett chat feedback Page 4 Glows Grows system  Teachers helped get ball rolling  I thought it was very fun to contribute to the conversation by using Twitter  I liked that being in chairs in a “closer circle” rather than desks was more fun  Fun   Good setup and in depth conversations took place  Twitter setup is cool and helpful  I really enjoyed how student driven the conversation went  Inner/outer circle system  Twitter hashtag  Whiteboards and laptops   The management by Mr. Byrne  It was an interesting idea  All technology worked correctly and allowed everyone to Tweet and see Tweets easily  Technology allowed people to see things outside of circle and bring them up in the inner circle to start a new conversation  The three groups and the screen showing the tweets updating was very efficient.  Also, the group accessibility through Twitter was generally a good idea.  Although we sometimes got off topic, the teachers’ effort to keep us on focus was very helpful and we need more of that  I thought Tweeting was great because it gave the outside people an opportunity to throw out ideas  I think it was all set up very nicely  Very efficient use of Twitter and technology to benefit inner circle discussions  Good backup plans for people without technology  Twitter helped enormously to engage outer circle  Scrolling Tweets was a clever idea  Enjoyed the ahead of time questions but not incorporated a lot and should have used more on Tweeted ideas screen more easily.  At my old school, the discussion was split up into 2 parts of the room in rows facing each other. Each side had a certain opinion. They all could see the board; I think that could be effective.  I wish the inner circle would read the outer circle’s Tweets  Some way to have smoother inner circle transitions  I thought we went off on tangents  Allow everyone have chance to speak  Longer sessions—15 minutes?  Have a part of session to look at Twitter chat  Call out good questions/Tweeted/mentions  Don’t allow too much tangential conversation  I think that the questions on the worksheet could differentiate more  Maybe incorporate a buzzer? Or create something so that 1 person can’t dominate by answering someone’s question immediately after its asked  Raise hands?  More time for each group?  When mentioning Tweets, also mention the comments on it  The actual Twitter feed was largely pointless—maybe twice it was referred to  Proctor the discussion more b/c they got very repetitive  Not do it with both classes—this minimizes discussion  Screen bigger (or zoom in)  Make screen more easily noticeable  Although the inner and outer was supposed to be same topic, talking about same things, it was like 2 different topics  I think the outside people should be able to raise their hands and ask a question if the people on the inside don’t have the answers  Too much focus on Tweets led to not
  5. 5. #toknisbett chat feedback Page 5 Glows Grows  It was nice to be able to share Tweets while in the outer circle instead of just taking notes on the discussion  Minimal pauses  Smooth transitions  No tech fails  Well explained  Friendly atmosphere  Well organized; no last minute chair fixing and stuff  Tweets came up on screen correctly  Minimal pauses paying attention to the actual discussion so I suggest we have certain time periods to Tweet and others to just pay attention  I think the sessions should be longer to allow everyone in the middle to have a chance to speak  Try to connect the conversation back to the Tweets  There were a lot of people so hard for quiet people to be able to talk  Keeping discussion on topic  Allow outer circle to occasionally add commentary during discussion  Use the Tweets more  Too many people and too short of discussions  Discussions seemed rather repetitive; more adult intervention  Sitting in certain parts of the inner circle— it was hard to see the board with the Tweets  Use Twitter chat more in discussion  Have Twitter chat have stronger  In circle, timing was hard to keep up with; timer would have been helpful.  A few of the Tweets from the students only showed up on the board (not really your fault)  A limit to people who jump in. Too quick to answer.  Pointless comments/comments that had already been answered
