to meet the criteria consistent with The New
Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry
of Education, 2007, relating to the following
strands in Visual Arts, Level 6: Understanding
the Arts in Context; Developing Practical
Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating
and Interpreting.
This sample demonstrates a high level of
fluency in the handling of a range of media.
Observational pencil drawings lead into
scraffito, which are then appropriately
transferred into beautifully executed woodcut
prints and paintings.
Ideas have been developed through the
combining and layering of these media
studies, contrasting tone and colour to pull
the viewer’s eye to focal areas. A clarification
of ideas is clearly seen in the decision to
simplify each arrangement by restricting the
detail in the negative spaces.
