Importance in 21st century education math and science
1. Math and Science in
21st Century Education
By: Brittney McPeak, Caleb Murray, Morgan Dixon, Zachary Sissel
2. Definitions
Math:
The study of how things relate to one another using
numbers. It shows the relationships among numbers,
shapes, and quantities using signs, symbols, and proofs.
4. Importance in 21st Century
Education
We are faced with math and science aspects every day in
our lives.
Provides a foundation and helps students master multi-
dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st
Century.
Encourages Critical Thinking skills through students’
use of experiments, journals, data analysis, and projects.
6. How it Applies to 21st Century
Learning
Both subjects can be difficult to incorporate into
technology and have often been thought of subjects only
certain people pick up.
It is now dangerous to think that way, as well as teach in a
way that forces children to memorize facts and numbers.
21st century math and science should be focused on
problem solving and using resources to solve those real
world problems and issues.
Students should also be taught how to use each subject
and apply it in ways other than writing problems, but
rather make it have meaning to their environment.
7. How it Applies to 21st Century
Learning
Questions to stay on track as a teacher:
-Are my students learning to value math and science, not
just doing it?
-Are my students using all their resources, and do they
understand how to use them?
-Do my students feel confident?
-Are my students capable of using al resources to solve a
problem?
-Are my students creating new approaches to solve the
problem?
8. Real Life Applications
A real life application of using math:
Setting: Physical Education Class
Topic: Baseball
Application: Throughout the baseball unit, students should
be required to keep their stats. Then at the end of the unit,
students will calculate things like the batting averages.

average.html
9. Real Life Applications
A real life application of using science:
Setting: World History Class
Topic: Industrial Revolution
Application: When discussing inventions in the Industrial
Revolution, it will be necessary to talk about the steam engine.
This is a perfect opportunity to incorporate science, by explaining
how steam engine works. Furthermore, the class can explore the
benefits of the Steam Engine and other alternative forms of
energy producing machines today and compare their effects on
the environment.
11. Technology
YouTube
- Videos on how things work like the Steam
Engine.
Blogs
- Share blogs from some of Math’s great minds.
WebQuests
- Create a lesson of you own and allow the
students to navigate on their own.
