  2. Northrop Fry’s Inductive Method Deductive Method
  3. Northrop Frye  Canadian educator and literary critic.  Wrote on Canadian literature – published in 1951.  The term “Archetypal” means original idea or pattern of something of which others are copies.  Archetypal approach is the interpretation of a text in the light of cultural patterns involved in it, and these cultural patterns are based on myth and rituals of nation.
  4. Reach to a conclusion based on observation. From particular to general – means, readers learns the general truth of life that is called inductive method. Proceeds inductively from particular truths. In simple words – first introduced the examples and then the rules.
  5. Example of Inductive Method This Cat is black. That Cat is black. A third Cat is black. Therefore all cats are black. This marble from the bag is blue. That marble from the bag is blue. A third marble from the bag is blue. Therefore all marbles are blue.

  7.  The conclusion is already given and we have to give example supporting that conclusion.  From general to particular – means, analysis, proceeds to established the meaning of work from the general truth to particular truth.  In simple words – first introduced with the general rules and then examples.
  8. Example of Deductive Method Bachelors are unmarried men. Varun is unmarried. Therefore Varun is a bachelor. All men are mortal. Kim is a man. Therefore, Kim is a mortal.

  10.  Literature can be interpreted in as many ways as possible.  These methods are useful for critics and it can derive reader in new direction and vision of any literary work.  If we want to interpret in different way through this methods, center and periphery can be changed.
