• A Horror is a genre that tries to create a sense of
excitement, panic, shock or fear to the viewers.
These films are normally disturbing and rely on
frightening the viewers through a representation
of their worst fears and nightmares. Horror films
commonly focus on the coming of an evil
power, person, or event. Many Horror films
include imaginary creatures such as
ghosts, vampires, and zombies.
Traditionally, Horror films include a huge amount
of violent behaviour and gore into the story line.
Though it has its own method, Horror films often
merge into other Fantasy, Thriller, and Science-

• Teen-Horror is a sub-genre that focuses mostly
around a teenager or a group of teens. In
general these films have a bigger cast and a
clear hero or heroine. Teen-Horror films often
relate too traditional teenage issues, for
example dating, prom, and turn them into
gripping and stimulating situations.
• Examples: I Know What You Did Last
Summer, Prom night, Texas Chainsaw
Massacre. Cabin in the woods.
4. Sub-genres of Horror
• A slasher film is a sub-genre of Horror film
that focuses on a psychotic killer. This killer
follows and murders his victims in very
violent and remarkable ways. Though it
focuses on a specific killer, the violence is
what sets Slasher films away from other
horror films. A Slasher film will apply more
screen time to expose murder and chaos
than a traditional Horror film.
• Examples: Halloween, My Bloody
Valentine, Black Christmas.

• A Monster film is sub-genre of Horror that
focuses on a fight between human beings and a
monsters. Often, the monster in the film has
been created in an “experimentation gone
wrong.” The monster usually acts as a
villain, and the film portrays a hero or heroine
that eventually saves the world from the
monster. even though these movies usually fall
into the Horror genre, Monster films have a
long tradition within Science-Fiction and
Fantasy genre too.
• Examples: Aliens, Godzilla, Creature from the

• Zombie film is a sub-genre of Horror film
that shows senseless human beings who
are brought back from the dead. These
films often consist of Zombie
invasions, and centre around Zombies
savaging on human flesh. The storyline of
a Zombie film then revolves around the
fight between the living, and the dead.
Zombie film not only falls into the Horror
genre, but as well the Sci-Fi, Thriller, and
Comedy as well.

of the Dead, 28 Days Later. The Evil Dead.

• Supernatural-Horror film is a sub-genre that
includes ghosts, demons, or other
representations of supernatural happenings.
Supernatural-Horror films mix elements of
religion into the story line. general themes in
Supernatural-Horror films contain the spirit
world, the devil, and demonic possession.
Different too Religious Thrillers, Supernatural-
Horror films are not limited to specific
religious fundamentals and can contain more
clearer and dreadful violence.
