Functions of Communication
Why can’t we just do what we
want or say anything we want?
This is a democratic country
anyway.
Are you kidding me? Why
don’t you answer your own
question?!
1. REGULATION/CONTROL
Regulation as thesaurus provides means
guideline or directive. Communication is
mainly used by people to regulate, direct,
or influence other people’s behavior. We
use regulation/control to communicate
the “do’s and don’ts” in the society.
Examples:
The traffic aide in the middle
of an intersection gestures
or blows his whistle to direct
the flow of vehicles and
pedestrians. In doing so, he
avoids a chaotic scenario of
vehicles crisscrossing
without regard for other
motorists and accidents that
may ensue.
Examples:
Religions all over the
world have sets of
laws they prescribe
for their faithful.
These laws are moral
guides that direct the
faithful on how to
live.
Direction:
Give examples of regulation/control communicated in
the following contexts:
1. In the hospital 8. in the church
2. In the restaurant 9. in the streets
3. At the park 10. in the library
4. In the grocery store
5. At the bank
6. In school
7. At home
Direction:
Match the speaker with the verbal or nonverbal cues he or she
uses to communicate regulation/control.
1. nurse/clinic assistant
2. judge
3. teacher
4. security guard (LRT)
5. president of the country
6. head of the senate BRC
7. librarian
8. parents
9. head of LTO
10. police
a. executive orders
b. summons to a hearing
c. rings the bell/buzzer
d. bangs the gavel
e. checks your attendance
f. “Next patient, please”
g. whistles to signal door closing
h. checkpoint barrier
i. curfew

Communication Strategy
Communication Strategy
According to Participatory Communication
Strategy Design: A Handbook, a communication strategy
is a well-planned series of actions aimed at achieving
certain objectives through the use of communication
methods, techniques, and approaches.
Example:
1. The CEO of a company is in financial trouble. He
needs to communicate to his employees a new
policy on their salaries.
2. The president of the SSAO will present to the KCCians
the new regulations regarding Energy Conservation.
In most cases, it is up to the communicator to
come up with a communication strategy
appropriate to a situation. The following tips will
help you in formulating your own effective
communication strategies.
1. Set clear and attainable goals.
2. Focus on the issue, if any, not on people.
3. Be flexible and open-minded.
4. Be a critical listener.
5. Demonstrate sensitivity at all times.
6. Allow for give-and-take.
7. Be genuine, honest, and open.
8. Use affirming responses. Acknowledge the
good points raised by the other party.
9. Be reasonable. Present only facts and
verifiable data, if necessary.
2. Social Interaction
It is the spontaneous verbal exchange
occurring in natural settings that are
typically familiar to the interactants
With whom do we
interact?
You live in a society made up of many
people, but the group you are most
familiar with is your social circle. You
are familiar with the members of your
social circle because you mingle and
communicate with them more often .
SOCIAL CIRCLE includes:
1. Your immediate FAMILY CIRCLE
2. EXTENDED FAMILY CIRCLE
3. PEER CIRCLE
5. COMMUNITY CIRCLE
Certain protocols or rules should be
observed for social interactions to be
successful, especially outside your
immediate circles.
Below are some examples of protocols:
* Do not be overly familiar with your
superior or any person of authority.
Address him/her appropriately and pay
respect at all times.
• Do not make inappropriate jokes or
body contact
• Always show respect and courtesy
• Do not use loaded words.
• In an argument, stick to the issue
and do not resort to personal attacks
3. EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
It is a manifestation of one’s
emotional state. It is an important
social signal that conveys a variety of
information regarding person’s state
of mind.
4. MOTIVATION
Communication is used to
encourage people into action.
How would you motivate the following
people?
1. A child who injured himself while
playing
2. A friend who lost a loved one
3. A friend who experienced break up
4. Manny Pacquiao who has just lost the
fight
5. INFORMATION
Communication is used to for
exchange of information.
