EADD implemented a farmers training radio program in 2010 with objectives of sharing dairy information and bridging information gaps. The initial program aired on Buddu FM and Radio Kitara but faced challenges due to lack of support and logistical issues. For phase two, EADD will complete an evaluation, engage more radio stations including CBS, seek financial support, and encourage DFBA involvement to strengthen the program.

1. EADD FARMERS TRAINING RADIO PROGRAM AN UPDATE

2. BACKGROUND In October 2010, EADD Implemented a farmers training radio program. Objectives: develop and implement a comprehensive radio training and awareness program and an action plan to bridge the information gaps and information needs amongst farmers and all stake holders in the dairy industry.

3. Tool for sharing information on all aspects dairy including but not limited to; dairy production, marketing, group governance and BDS. AgProcess Concepts Ltd - Consultant was hired to implement program. Initially Prog was to run on CBS but due to its delayed closure, a survey was conducted and Buddu FM and Radio Kitara were found to be the better alternatives

4. Buddu FM – located in Masakawith Offices in Kampala, Sembabule and Kalungucovers masaka, wakiso, Sembabule, mpigi, Kalungu. Radio Kitara- located in Masindi has offices in Kampala and covers Luweero, masindi, nakaseke, nakasongola and parts of Kiboga.

5. Pilot broadcast Chose a magazine format to differ from the straight-jacket presenter –caller format Our maiden broadcast was to be a 6 months pilot run. Purpose was to: Assess reception Evaluate listernership and feedback Integrate farmer recommendations Come up with more suitable format for farmer education and benefit

6. On the whole: Program was well received Provided training on most of the aspects of the project and the technologies we are fronting Farmers were given opportunity to participate in call-in sessions and interact with SPs andexperts Attracted SPs to participate and Sponsor

7. However Limited support from project staff, e.g editorial team was constituted but never sat Limited capacity by Radio Buddu to present program in proper format (magazine) Logistical insufficiencies affected data capture from field
