2. The gender of the people who took my questionnaire are as follows, however, I don’t believe that
this has much of an effect on the magazine without being discriminative towards people. As you
find with most music magazines there is little evidence that the magazine is targeting one
particular sex.

3. When asking what the preferred music genre of the audience asked was I have found that the
main music genres liked are “folk” and “indie”, this brought me to the conclusion that the genre
of my music magazine should be a “nu-folk” music magazine, this is a modern day take on folk
music which combines indie music too.

4. When asking the name of age of those who took part in my questionnaire I found that most of
the majority are aged between 11- 21 years, this is quite a good target audience because I am
within that age bracket therefore I can relate to those people and deliver what they want to see.
This, therefore is the age group which my magazine will be targeting.

5. After asking how often people like to buy music magazines this is the result. As you can see most people have
answered by saying “Every week” and there for I will be creating a magazine which will be published every
week. However, a large number of people also said that they like to buy music magazines “Every so often” this
is interesting because it means I will be able to make a music magazine which doesn’t have to have a sequel
magazine which can only be understood by those who have bought it the week before. The magazine
therefore, should be easy to pick up and put down at leisure.

6. When asked the price that the audience would be willing pay the majority have indicated that
they would like to pay £2.00 - £3.99, this is a reasonable however due to the age of the audience
that has been discovered previously, I believe it will be better to stick to the lower end of the
price bracket.

7. The number of pages is important to a magazine, it determines what kind of read the audience will
have, whether it will be long and detailed or short and sweet, it seems that most people would like to have a
magazine between 51 – 70 pages long. This shows that the magazine will have to include a lot of information in
quite a small amount of pages but due to the age of the audience I do believe that this is reasonable.

8. The adverts in a magazine are very important, you do not want to offend or bore the reader in anyway so by
understanding what the audience like to buy/see advertised is a good way to understand the reader. As you can
see the main preferences of the audience are “New Music Albums” and “gigs and festivals” this allows me to
use the advertising spaces allocated in my music magazine to attract more readers to it by targeting their
interests.

9. To gain an idea of how many people already buy music magazines I used a question to identify
the number of people who do/don’t. Most people who have answered have answered that they
do in fact buy music magazines. I also asked those who had answered with “yes” to specify which
magazines they bought, the answers are shown below. These answers show that there is a lot of
competition from one big, established magazine NME this means that my magazine has to offer
more than them.

10. Understanding what the audience want to see in a magazine is one of the most important factors. As you can
see the biggest proportions of people wanted to see “Interviews”, “Gig guides” and “reviews” however the
main focus is based upon “gig guides” so I need to include a section for definite on this subject. This also gives
me an idea that the audience like to listen to live music and I can therefore appeal to this fact when considering
the artists to include.

11. I asked the question “what would you like to see feature in a “folk” magazine?” these are the responses I was
given. As you can see there are a lot of responses which relate to musical instruments such as “acoustic
guitars, banjos and mandolins” this once again links with the idea of having live music within the magazine. The
answers given are very stereotypical of folk music but I think that is a good thing because it creates an identity
with the audience and often music magazines can mock or make jokes about the stereotypical view of their
magazine, this only strengthens the bond between reader and maker.
