Can you use English effectively in a job interview?
Come prepared
Know yourself - your strengths, weaknesses and accomplishments.
Exhibit enthusiasm
First impressions, positive or negative, dramatically affect the ultimate evaluation.
Appear friendly and outgoing
Smile and say hello to everyone, including other admin staff/receptionist. A positive reaction from support staff is an
important factor in the overall evaluation.
Come prepared for key questions
Practice your responses to all the typical questions so it becomes natural and fluent = confidence. How well you speak
will have a bigger impact than what you say.
Remain involved
The most effective job interviews are those with a two-way conversation. Learn enough skills with English to provide
relevant insights.
Become confident in
job interviews
Know your key strengths
Be prepared and practice talking about your 5 or 6 best attributes – with an example of each. These should be
the ultimate reason you get the job over someone else.
Give 1 to 2 minute responses
Communication is the key to successful interviewing. Expand answers beyond just the basic question.
Remain attentive
Stay alert during the job interview. Maintain good eye contact. Sit forward in your chair. Show high levels of
interest and stay enthused. Body language (non-verbal communication) is very important!
Ask probing questions
A few strategic questions can demonstrate your intelligence, analytical skills and assertiveness. Have these
prepared from your research.
Be positive about co-workers
Don’t bad-mouth (criticize) previous positions, companies or employers. This implies a negative attitude,
typical of those who don’t take personal responsibility for their actions.
Polite introductions.
Practice sounding
confident with your
English.
Can you talk
about yourself
using
professional
vocabulary?
Learn how to
use these
words
correctly
Key phrases to use
Q. “How would you describe yourself?”
(Also: What are your strengths / positive traits? Why should we hire you?)
I consider myself hardworking / reliable / dependable / helpful / outgoing /
organised / honest / cooperative.
I’m a team-player / an experienced team-leader / a seasoned (experienced)
professional / a dedicated worker.
I’m good at dealing with people / handling stress.
I pay attention to details.
I understand my customers’ needs.
I learn quickly and take pride in my work.
I love challenges and getting the job done.
Be sure to explain
answer with
examples – “HOW”
you did this.
Doing research into
company shows you are
serious to want the job.
Makes it easier to have
ongoing discussion.
Learn how to explain
what you studied can
be relevant and
useful to the job.
“I have the right combination of skills and experience. For example, the job description says
you need people with project management skills who can work well in teams. At university
a drama society I was involved//organised an annual charity fundraiser dinner. Last year I headed
a sub-committee arranging the catering and venue so I’m used to overseeing tasks and
working in a team. We also increased the amount of money raised for charity – up by a third
on the previous year.”
 Recruiters don’t just look for evidence of involvement in extracurricular activities – they like to know
how effective you were.
 Specify information that helps to quantify your contribution and impact, it’s a stronger way to
demonstrate your capability – that you’re the right graduate for the job.
 Yes, you want to highlight your strengths, but you need to back them up with evidence and relate
them to this role you’re applying for.
Check the competences listed in the job description, and prepare concrete examples that show
you have those skills and work experience required. It will help you to answer with more confidence.
Q. “Why do you think you’ll be successful in this job?”
Learn how to explain
which aspects of your
limited experience are
relevant to the job.
Even basic tasks provide
useful experience for
your career.
Q. “What relevant experience do you have?”
I have worked as a Sales Representative for several years.
I have good organizational skills as I have worked as an Event Organizer / Personal Assistant
for the last six years.
I have great people skills: I’ve been working in Customer Service and been dealing with
complaints for five years.
Q. “Why would you like to work for us?”
I would like to put into practice what I learned at university.
I would like to make use of the experience I have gained in the past ten years.
I believe that your company will allow me to grow both professionally and as a person.
I’ve always been interested in E-Commerce / Marketing / Computer Programming and your
company excels (is one of the best) in this field.
“Takings (sales/turnover) at the café where I worked part-time during my studies were
down, so I talked with my fellow students who were potential customers to get some
ideas for things we could do to attract more business. I approached my boss with a
couple of ideas and she agreed to invest in flyers and advertisements in the student
paper. We also introduced a loyalty card scheme where customers would get a free
coffee after they bought five coffees. Within a month, sales were up 30%.”
This answer highlights your effectiveness, interpersonal skills, powers of
persuasion, commercial awareness, as well as an ability to take a creative approach
to problem solving.
You are asked this question in order to find out if you’re capable of coming up with new ideas and
thinking creatively in order to solve problems.
You can take your example from your work experience, a class group project
or a skills-related activity.
Q. “Give me an example of when you used your initiative?”
Can you talk about
your weaknesses and
still make it sound like
a positive outcome?
This is not just about a weakness, but you can “spin it” as a great opportunity to show that you're
right for the job.
Question is designed to test analytical abilities and self-awareness, so giving a
confident answer to this will impress.
Always admit you have a weakness – but choose one before – practice the answer.
Explain you may have had a problem in the past, but taken steps to combat it.
“I used to find that pressure got to me but I’ve found ways to minimise this.
So, I did a time management course at uni which helped me organise myself
and reduce stress.”
Choose a weakness that could also be viewed as a strength, such as:
“Because I tend to get very passionate about the work I do, I get frustrated
if others don’t share my enthusiasm.”
Q. “What is your biggest weakness?”
Key phrases to use:
“What are your weaknesses / negative traits?”
 I’m a perfectionist and I may be too hard on myself or my co-workers sometimes.
I might need to learn to be more flexible when things are not going according to
plan. This is something I’m working on at the moment.
 I occasionally focus on details instead of looking at the bigger picture. I’m learning how
to focus on the overall progress as well.
 A few of my colleagues think I’m sometimes too direct with people, so I’ve been more
cautious in how I say things with certain people.
Be sure to explain answer with
examples – “HOW” you did this.
Why it’s relevant
Q. “What do you do in your current role?”
I’m responsible for the day-to-day running of the business / for recording and conveying
messages for the departments.
I ensure that high standard of customer care is maintained.
I liaise with the Business Development and Business Services Units.
I deal with/manage/coordinate incoming calls and correspond with clients via e-mails.
I’m in charge of the high-priority accounts.
Q. “Why did you leave your last job?”
I was laid off because the company relocated / downsized / needed to cut costs.
I resigned from my previous position, because I didn’t have enough room to grow with my
employers.
I wanted to focus on finding a job that is nearer to home / that represents new
challenges / where I can grow professionally / that helps me advance my career.
Must explain “HOW”
& “WHY” this is
important.
Always be keen to ask a
few questions.
Q. “Do you have any questions?”
What would be the first project I’d be working on if I was offered the job?
Who would I report to? Who would I be working closely with?
Are there any benefits your company offers its employees?
When will I get an answer? How soon can I start?
I hope you have found the above examples useful. Now it’s time to memorize the ones that you like
and use them when needed. You’ll sound much more fluent this way.
English Fluency = Confidence = best chance to get that job!

  • 17. “Takings (sales/turnover) at the café where I worked part-time during my studies were down, so I talked with my fellow students who were potential customers to get some ideas for things we could do to attract more business. I approached my boss with a couple of ideas and she agreed to invest in flyers and advertisements in the student paper. We also introduced a loyalty card scheme where customers would get a free coffee after they bought five coffees. Within a month, sales were up 30%.” This answer highlights your effectiveness, interpersonal skills, powers of persuasion, commercial awareness, as well as an ability to take a creative approach to problem solving. You are asked this question in order to find out if you’re capable of coming up with new ideas and thinking creatively in order to solve problems. You can take your example from your work experience, a class group project or a skills-related activity. This is not just about a weakness, but you can “spin it” as a great opportunity to show that you're right for the job. Question is designed to test analytical abilities and self-awareness, so giving a confident answer to this will impress. Always admit you have a weakness – but choose one before – practice the answer. Explain you may have had a problem in the past, but taken steps to combat it. “I used to find that pressure got to me but I’ve found ways to minimise this. So, I did a time management course at uni which helped me organise myself and reduce stress.” Choose a weakness that could also be viewed as a strength, such as: “Because I tend to get very passionate about the work I do, I get frustrated if others don’t share my enthusiasm.” Q. “What is your biggest weakness?”

Key phrases to use: “What are your weaknesses / negative traits?”  I’m a perfectionist and I may be too hard on myself or my co-workers sometimes. I might need to learn to be more flexible when things are not going according to plan. I’m learning how to focus on the overall progress as well.  A few of my colleagues think I’m sometimes too direct with people, so I’ve been more cautious in how I say things with certain people. Be sure to explain answer with examples – “HOW” you did this. Why it’s relevant

Now it’s time to memorize the ones that you like and use them when needed. You’ll sound much more fluent this way. English Fluency = Confidence = best chance to get that job!
