  2. 2. Anger of God <ul><li>Today it is a Repugnant Doctrine </li></ul><ul><li>Everyone only wants to hear about God’s Love </li></ul><ul><li>People cannot bear the thought that God will judge or punish anyone. </li></ul><ul><li>Nahum’s job is to show the anger of God </li></ul>

Book of Nahum <ul><li>Often Neglected </li></ul><ul><li>Composed of only 3 Chapters </li></ul><ul><li>2 Tim. 3:16-17 </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” </li></ul></ul></ul>

Background <ul><li>Prophecy from the book of Jonah has been fulfilled. 100 years after. </li></ul><ul><li>Nineveh (capital of Assyria) invades Judah & Israel </li></ul><ul><li>Nahum means consolation or comfort during these times. </li></ul><ul><li>God promises to destroy the enemies </li></ul>

God’s Terrible Anger Nahum 1:2-6 <ul><li>Some people are easily angered </li></ul><ul><ul><li>People pity them and don’t fear them. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>God is infinitely patient </li></ul><ul><ul><li>He is slow to anger </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>He gives us numerous chances to repent </li></ul></ul><ul><li>God is angry </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not a temper tantrum </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Controlled, terrible rage </li></ul></ul>

Hebrew Descriptions for the word ANGER or WRATH <ul><li>Jealousy – not petty jealousy but overwhelming concern by God for His love. </li></ul><ul><li>Anger - literally means &quot;heavy breathing,&quot; or &quot;hot breathing.&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>Indignation - &quot;foaming at the mouth&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>Poured out like fire – means “burning” </li></ul>

God’s Wrath is Personal – Nahum 1:8-11 <ul><li>God’s anger there towards Assyrian King, Sennacherib was the King at that time and some scholars say that the prophecy was fulfilled in his reign. </li></ul><ul><li>Isaiah 37:36-38 (Verse 14 of Nahum 1 was literally fulfilled) </li></ul><ul><li>Sennacherib was murdered by his sons while worshipping his idols. </li></ul><ul><li>God’s wrath can be directed at a single person </li></ul><ul><li>God’s justice causes Him to punish </li></ul>

God’s Anger is Thorough – Nahum 2 <ul><li>Dramatic destruction of Nineveh (v.1-6) </li></ul><ul><li>History tells us that the combined armies of Cyaxares and Nabopolasser, the father of Nebuchadnezzar, came up against Nineveh </li></ul><ul><li>Nothing and no one escapes God’s judgment. </li></ul><ul><li>There is nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Diodorus Siculus - Greek Historian <ul><li>There was an old prophecy that Nineveh should not be taken till the river become an enemy with the city . And in the third year of the siege, the river being swollen with continual rains overflowed every part of the city and broke down the wall for twenty furlongs. Then the king [of Nineveh] thinking that the oracle was fulfilled and the river became an enemy of the city, built a large funeral pile in the palace and collected together all his wealth and his concubines and his eunuch, burnt himself and the palace with them all. And the enemy entered at the breach that the waters had made and took the city. </li></ul>
