Study
• Candidates are required to answer one question
from a choice of two. Candidates are required to
compare and contrast two films either from the
same genre or dealing with a specific theme. Both
questions will have an emphasis on the relationship
between aspects of the films' narrative in relation to
generic characteristics. The first question will be
based primarily on narrative study. The second will
be based on contextual study. Issues of
representation will be common to both questions.

10minsKey link between the two films is that they are both set in the Deep South of America, in neighbouring states Alabama and Mississippi. Race is a ‘central theme of southern history’ (historian Ulrich Phillips) and is key to the link between these two films but the time difference allows as to approach a discussion of whether the messages and values have changed. In the South… the legacy of institutionalized racism, first in the form of slavery, then in that of segregation, confers to race specific dimension [in both films] that cannot be ignored . (Helene Charlery)
5minsThe themes can be said to be a conduit for the communication of the messages and values of the films. The themes that can be said to be shared by both film are:bigotry, which can be said to cover racism, racial intolerance and racial inequality, justice and the law, perspective, moral courage and ethics.

15minsThe need to consider the key theme to be able to create links to the 1990sAlso very popular at this shows like COPS reinforce the idea that the African American is a criminal and that the justice system seems to serve and protect only white America.Rodney KingAfter two passengers were placed in the patrol car, five Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers (Stacey Koon, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Rolando Solano) attempted to subdue King, who came out of the car last. In a departure from the usual procedure, which is to tackle and cuff a suspect, King was tasered, kicked in the head, beaten with PR-24 batons for over one minute, then tackled and cuffed. The officers claimed that King was under the influence of PCP at the time of arrest, which caused him to be very aggressive and violent towards the officers. The video showed that he was crawling on the ground during the beating and that the police made no attempt to cuff him.[7]A subsequent test for the presence of PCP turned up negativeDue to the heavy media coverage of the arrest, the trial received a change of venue from Los Angeles County to the politically conservative city of Simi Valley in neighboring Ventura County. The jury was composed of ten Caucasians, one Hispanic, and one Asian.[15] The prosecutor, Terry White, was black.[16][17]20mins group discussion – actually write out in full sentences (perhaps refer to the themes to help you – focus on bigotry, Justice and the Law and Ethics)10mins feed back
