Toys from trash

  1. 1. Arind Gupta’s Toys from Trash for Learning Chelsea Behymer ED 562 Short Pt. Show

Notas do Editor

  • Arvind Gupta has been a toymaker in India for 30 years.
  • But he’s not your average toy-maker.
  • As a young engineer, Arvind became a part of a national effort in India to re-vitalize science in village schools.
  • The slogan of the program: “Go to the people. Build with what they have.”
  • So that’s exactly what Arvind did.
  • But first, he did some observing. He noticed that village children were somewhat of engineers themselves, building toys using things they’d found among their refuse.
  • Arvind also noticed that in doing so, they were learning basic mathematic, physical, and chemical concepts. They just didn’t know it.
  • Arvind says that the best thing a child can do with a toy is to break it.
  • Children want to make things, to do things.
  • Actually, most of us do. And should. This is how we have always learned.
  • Science is not a rich man’s game. At least it doesn’t have to be.
  • So, what were these kids making? And what were they learning?
  • Rubber bike tubing and toothpicks can be used to create angles. These shapes easily change
  • These angles then become shapes.
  • These shapes easily change form when manipulated or put under pressure.
  • Except for one. Can you think of it?
  • So, kids, why do we build/engineer things with triangles?
  • Because it’s the only rigid shape.
  • What’s so great about these toys from trash? No glue or scissors required. Little resources.
  • How did Arvind use it to change science in schools?
  • From newspaper, to yarn, to plastic containers … the possibilities are endless.
  • Some of these things are so simple, Arvind suggests this is why the kids figured it out before he did.
  • Reusing waste and recycling it takes on a whole new meaning as Arvind wraps up his demo.
  • Even straws can teach us about sound.
  • What can trash teach your students?
