world, viewing from a
greater distance.
The reef contains an
abundance of marine life
and comprises of over
3.000 individual reef
systems and tropical
islands with beautiful sun
and golden beaches.

3. LOCATION
The Great Barrier Reef is in the coral sea, in Australia´s north-
eastern coast.The 2300 kilometre The Great Barrier Reef is the
largest coral reef system in the world. It´s along the state of
Queensland´s coastline.
4. WHEN WAS IT LISTED?
• It was included as world Heritage list as a natural site on 30 October 1981,
covering an area of 348000 square kilometres and standing across a
contigous latitudinal rage of 10º to 24º.
5. WHY WAS IT
LISTED?• The great barrier reef was listed because:
– It provides a habitat for rare spaecies of plants and animals.
– It represents significant ecological and biological processes in the
evolution and development of coastal and marine escosystem.
– It contains superlative natural phenomena and areas of natural beauty
and exceptional importance.
6. Some enviromentalists had agreed
the reef needed to be added to the
45 sites already on UNESCO´s list to
protect it from worsening water
pollution, and major coastal
development projects.
If UNESCO and The World Heritage
Commitee says that preventive
measures for pollution haven´t taken,
the reef could be considered again
for inclusion on “in danger” list in
2017
7. TOURISM
• The Great Barrier reef is a popular tourist destination with over two million
visitors each year. Tourism to the reef generates aproximately 6 billion
dollars per year.
• It is a great holiday destination for families and kids.
8. Before been part of
the UNESCO
Heritage list, it was a
famous place for
tourists . A lot of
people wanted to
visit the reef because
of the marine life and
the corals,principally,
people that love
marine animals.It is
the perfect place to
practice snorkel.
