The title
For my masthead, I used impact as the font, as The ‘top of the pops’ magazine is of the same genre
to make It stand out. I also used drop as my magazine, and also happens to use a similar

The genre
I tried to follow the ‘pop genre by using bright, flashy colours which may
Have connotations of fun, and not-so-seriousness, like the examples used
The top two images to the right, and also Tasha's hair shown in the bottom

Of colours also, which is not usually a convention found in music
Magazines. My font was Generally serif also, with some sans serif in there too,
as unlike other Genres, pop doesn’t have to be this way or that, as it covers
such a wide Range of music.
I used on the whole, plain backgrounds to make the items on the page
Stand out, like on the bottom image to the right, the black complements
The pink and makes it almost jump out of the page.
9. 2. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Age and gender
Being a pop magazine, my magazine is primarily aimed at teenage girls, probably a similar
Audience to ‘bliss’ or ‘top of the pops’. My magazine features teenage girls, around the same
Age as my targeted audience. Having cover artists with similar ages may
Make readers feel more attracted to the magazine as they may be able to relate
To the issues inside, teenage readers may also consider them to be role models.
They’re represented in a positive way, smiling.
Mise en scene, and clothing used in my images
For my images I tried to follow the conventions of magazines,
By taking a medium close up, as most magazines do, for example, the
One of taylor swift to the right.
The fact that my cover artist, tasha, has pink hair also fits the theme
Well, because the colour pink often has connotations of pop.
The clothes worn by Tasha and Abby are both casual,
But would probably appeal to different readers,
Tasha’s clothes aren’t very music themed, whereas
Abby’s are paler and calmer in colour, maybe more girly.
Race represented
I think stereotypically white artists are often
associated with pop Music, as black artists are often
associated with R&b. therefore, both of the girls
Used in my magazine are white to fit in with the
‘image’ of pop.

Body language & facial expressions

On these two photo’s , although one is a close up
and the other a long shot, Abby and Tasha are
both smiling, and their facial expressions express
a welcoming, friendly approach.
On the other hand, their body language is quite
different, Abby's photo is slightly looking down,
whereas in Tasha's she’s standing more
confidently, in that way these two contrast to

your media product and why?
I think one of the best publishers for
My magazine would be:
Ipc already has one of the biggest music
magazines out at the moment, nme, so are
evidently experienced in the music industry, but
don’t have a music magazines in the pop genre, so
my magazine, firework, could fill a missing place
in their roster.
Other ‘ipc’ brands are shown above
It is evident from the selection of magazines above,
that ipc caters for a variety of age ranges and
both genders. Their magazines go from bland
coloured, specialist magazines like ‘motorboat’, to
bright coloured gossip magazines like ‘look’. My
magazine is also around the c1 social class, maybe
‘b’, and judging by their current magazines, they
are flexible when it comes to social class. They
also brand magazines to suit a range of different
interests/types of people. For example, it’s not
usually the same kind of person that buys
‘wallpaper*’ that would buy ‘look’.

Bauer also, like ipc, brand a range
of other magazines, including a
selection of ‘gossip’ magazines,

of their brands in the following

14. 3. What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product and why?
My overall choice of publisher is:
I have chosen ‘ipc’ as my final choice of publisher because I think there is
a gap in their roster for a ‘pop’ magazine like mine. They are already
experienced in publishing music magazines as they already brand ‘nme’,
but as that is a totally different genre to mine – more
alternative/rock whereas mine is pop.
My overall choice of publisher isn’t:
Although already experienced in publishing a variety of music
magazines, like ‘kerrang’ and ‘q’, I think Bauer already covers a range
of gossip magazines, with similar features to my magazine, and so I feel
‘ipc’ would have more of a gap in the roster for my magazine than
Bauer would.
