Shea Stadium was built in Flushing Meadows, Queens to replace the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants who had left New York after the 1957 season, leaving New York City without a National League team. Construction began in 1961 and cost $28.5 million, with Shea opening in 1964 and hosting both the New York Mets and New York Jets football team until the Jets moved to a new stadium in 1983. While primarily a baseball stadium, Shea had movable stands to accommodate football and hosted other teams temporarily. The Mets played their final game at Shea in September 2008 before moving to the new Citi Field.
