Why I Want To Be A Writer
About halfway through my creative writing degree, I had an existential crisis. Ever since I read
Letters to a Young Contrarian at the age of thirteen– ignore that I only understood about twenty
percent of it at the time – I knew I wanted to be a writer. Christopher Hitchens' words inspired me
and sparked a love of literature and intellectual honesty that persists to this day. However, as weeks
turned into months in class, I kept thinking, do I even want to be a writer, and if so, what stories do I
want to tell? These thoughts remained and grew louder, creating a mental block that impacted my
creativity and thus made the plethora of writing assignments I was given more unbearable. It was a
vicious cycle that led me down a path of self–reflection

John Steinbeck's Greatest Writer
Have you ever wondered how someone decides to become a writer? Where do they find the
inspiration and the characters for their stories. John Ernst Steinbeck was one of the greatest
writers of his time. In 1962 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Not only has his books been
made into movies they have become classics and added to school reading lists. John Ernst
Steinbeck Jr. was born February 27, 1902 to John and Olive Steinbeck in Salinas, California. John
has two older and one younger sisters. John's father was a businessman and his mother a former
teacher. Although, the family was not wealthy John had a happy childhood. As a child he was
described as being observant and shy. At the age of fifteen he decided to become a writer. John

My Greatest Strength As A Writer
1.I think my greatest strength as a writer is that my sound ideas are always clear. The thesis and
the body paragraphs in my essay are always supported by evidences and details from the book. In my
essay, I always have a decent beginning and ending.
2.The weaknesses I see in my writing are my sentence fluency and conventions. When I am writing
an essay, it is difficult for me to have correct grammar and no run–on sentences.
3.I think my sentence fluency has definitely improved since September. In early of school year, I
always had a lot of run–on sentences in my essay, then I started to use transition words in my essay
since the Shakespeare essay. Transition words significantly eliminated the run–on sentences in my
essay. I scored a two

My Strengths And Weaknesses As A Writer
Paragraph#1 My history as a writer began when I first joined school mostly in first grade. I had
started language arts in first grade and from then on I have been writing even though I am not a
fan of writing I will still do the work its just annoying to me. However I do feel like I could learn to
enjoy this if a topic were to interest me.
Paragraph#2 My strengths and weakness as a writer are after awhile of writing I do get migraines but
their not that bad to me I can handle them the biggest issue I have is when I am writing because I
had broke my pinky at one point and it freezes up on me sometimes. Another weakness is that my
spelling is still not as strong. However a good strength is that I do have a good vocabulary.

I Am A Good Writer
I have never been a good writer as far as I can remember. It has always been that way, no matter
what strategies I have employed to improve my writing ability be it making an outline or planning
out the paper in any way. It didn't matter if I was doing a research paper, a reflective essay or even a
personal narrative. The writing that I had done in middle school and high school was by far the worst
of it. When I was little, I used to love writing. I would write about anything from dragons to
adventures in space, and most of the time it wasn't in any way related to school at all. I used to
love writing because I could write about whatever I wanted and had no one to tell me that it was
poorly written and no one to give me a bad grade on it. It wasn't until I started to have to write
papers for school that I began to dislike writing. I remember when I was ten, I wrote a story about
two dragons fighting off hordes of knights attempting to steal the dragons gold for the corrupt
king. No one told me that I had to write a story, I wrote it on my own time over the summer and I
loved every minute that I was writing. I wrote almost every day, but now that I started to get bad
grades on something that I worked so hard on and being told I was an abysmal writer, it began to
discourage me and push me away from the enjoyment I used to have when writing.
I was a sub–par writer all throughout my time going to school, but it was the worst in my senior
year of high school. I went

The Reflection Of My Writing As A Writer
After looking back at all the writing I have accomplished in this class and experiences I have
faced in other English classes, I realized how they have affected me as a writer and where I stand
as one as of now. The writer I am today has been greatly benefited with years of learning English
in school and other literacy sponsors. Throughout the years, I have learned a number of ways to
write and I have been positively impacted by these methods. I now know the type of writer that I
am and how I write best and in under which conditions. Now, I have my own writing process that
most likely differs from my peers. A writing process is the steps an individual takes in order to
produce a form of writing. According to The Alton L. Wilmer Writing Center, "Creating a
successful paper is a different process for everyone. Some writers require complete silence with no
distractions, while other crave noise while they work." When conducting a paper, I go through the
prewriting, drafting, revision, and editing process. The prewriting process is important to the final
draft of my paper since it helps me organize my thoughts in which I can then find the focus of my
paper. During the drafting process, I tend to just write everything that comes to mind. It motivates
me to keep writing to the point that all my ideas are typed. I then rearrange them where they best
flow and make sense. My rough drafts are, as Anne Lamott claims, "a shitty rough draft." When it
comes to the revision and editing

Theory of Writing
Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece
of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the
basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this
semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that
has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create
our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very
similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in–class exercises, and final
assignments, I think I have figured out my own...show more content...
While doing this, I am also learning how to write better as a young adult going into the mature
world where writing is key component in everyday life. Lastly, reflection is usually conceived as an
after thought. Reflection is known to be more personal to the writer. This is good for a writer to link
personal experiences into the writing. Not only is the author reflecting but also the audience too by
creating a mental image in their head. Everyone will not have the same reflection because each
individual thinks differently about various topics. For instance in the magazine article "Is Google
Making us Stoopid?" by Nicholas Carr. Carr explains that Google is something you are researching
rather than learning. In the article, Carr explains his reasoning like "When the Net absorbs a
medium, that medium is recreated in the Net's image. It injects the medium's content with
hyperlinks, blinking ads, and other digital gewgaws, and it surrounds the content with the content of
all the other media it has absorbed. A new e–mail message, for instance, may announce its arrival as
we're glancing over the latest headlines at a newspaper's site. The result is to scatter our attention
and diffuse our concentration." This quote makes me as a reader imagine someone clicking off the
screen to another window where the email site is. It also makes me reflect on when I may have
done this sort of action. I actually just minimized this paper because I just

Becoming A Better Writer : Writing
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important
that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn't know
how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking
English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a
satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before
entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I
obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify
the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It's a way to express my thoughts and allow
others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I
know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various
papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not
only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences. This
portfolio demonstrates the strongest and the weakest of my writing as a first year college student
and as a rising professional of psychology major. As psychology students, we think beyond the norm
and obtain enormous amounts of research for proof, similar to English majors. As a result of
Columbia College being a liberal art institution,

I love to read and at one time in my life a friend encouraged me to write stories, I even wrote about
some of the unusual dreams that I had. I have three stories started, but they are not complete.
Several years later, another friend encouraged me to go back to college after being told at work
that I will never be moved from my current position because I do not have a college degree. Since,
my friend was doing all her classes virtually, I decided to submit my application to the college that
she was attending. I took one class in the fall of last year. I was so nervous because it was
primarily written papers. I almost dropped out. My friend encouraged me to try. I had expressed my
fears to my instructor and he helped me become a better writer to express my thoughts and feelings
onto paper. In the last year, I have had a class that taught me a variety of interesting things about
Microsoft office. Within that class I also learned about the research tab in Word. This has become
my lifeline in research no matter what style that was chosen. I learned about Purdue OWL and that
has been a great resource for the different types of writing that I have done. To ensure that my
papers were done correctly, I was introduced to Paper Rater, which can help catch any grammar
errors and misspelling errors. It has a lot of interesting things and if paid, will even help detect
plagiarism. My greatest strength in writing, I believe, is my ability to be a good story teller. I can be

My Greatest Strengths As A Writer
I've always struggled with trying to stay focused on my school work. While it may not look like it
on the outside, it is a constant struggle in the inside. My mind is like a jungle gym with a bunch
of kids zooming around. Sometimes I would just stare at the screen of my computer hoping the
words would just appear themselves, but if that ever happened I probably wouldn't even be here.
My brain has these switches in them to tell me to do something else like play a game on your tablet
or watch Netflix right when I am writing my essay. It's how my brain works, and there never seems
to be a manual switch because it's automatic. My lack of focus caused me to face many obstacles,
but through my weaknesses I discovered some of my greatest...show more content...
I also have a process when I peer review papers. I make sure to always compliment the student's
paper and then I point out some areas where there may need some improvement. I always make sure
to provide an example so they know what I am trying to say.
My last greatest strength as a writer is my commitment to providing the audience information in a
way that can be easily understood. When I was writing my research paper, I had to explain some
complicated concepts like 'Bayer demosaicing' and 'photosites.' In my research, I quoted what
McHugh explained about the Bayer demosaicing, "Bayer 'demosaicing' is the process of
translating this Bayer array of primary colors into a final image which contains full color
information at each pixel." Instead of rephrasing the definition I made a comparison, "It's like a
coloring book. You decide what colors you want and you determine where they go, but until you've
finished completing the coloring you won't see the final results." My comparison also provided a
visual representation of how the Bayer demosaicing process works. I think this helps make the
concept easier to comprehend because the reader can relate to it.
When I write my papers I usually like to talk out loud when I'm writing them because it helps me
hear what it sounds like. However, my lack of focus can cause me to make a lot of grammar
mistakes such as comma splices. In all my papers, comma splices are the most common grammar
mistakes I make. When I'm reviewing my

My Growth As A Writer
The Memo will directly address my growth as a writer throughout my time in EH 101–13. It will
also highlight my current strengths and weaknesses in my own personal writing style.
My DevelopmentRhetorical Analysis: This being the first paper I wrote for you, it turned out to be
utter garbage. This was my worst essay because I was overconfident in my own writing ability and
didn't think I had much room to improve on. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I
have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper
was riddled with comma splices, even after you did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't
out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It
was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have
improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper taught me a great deal on how to think more
critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned
my greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more
of my errors I can continue to improve and move forwards with my writing abilities.
Literary Analysis: The Literary Analysis was by far my best essay and the one I most enjoyed
writing. The new critical thinking skills I learned in the first essay made writing this paper much
easier. I also found the topics of the

William Shakespeare is considered the most influential and greatest writers of all time because he
writes great stories, he has the ability to turn phrases, and has very a compelling use of characters. I
will be including in my research countless facts about Shakespeare and educated information on why
William Shakespeare is considered the greatest writer of all time. Shakespeare 's feats and
accomplishments have all been established and based on his early life and childhood.
William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford–upon–Avon, United Kingdom
(bio.com). He was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Shakespeare (bio.com). He was not born into
a family of nobility of great wealth nor was he aspired to do great things and live the life he did.
Based on his social class he did not attend a university of have any sort of great education taught to
him, William Shakespeare was a self–taught man. His success as an actor, playwright and writer was
entirely based upon himself and what he dreamt of doing. He became the best at what he did
because he had the strive and passion in doing what he loved best.
He was born to John Shakespeare, a glove maker and a tradesmen (bio.com). His mother, Mary,
was the daughter to a known farmer. He was baptized shortly after his birth leading him to be
catholic. At that time infants were baptized nearly a couple days after their birth. Shakespeare was
the third born of 8 children. He grew up about a three hour carriage ride from

I Am A Great Writer
I'm a great writer. Writing is something that comes naturally to me. I don't even have to think
about it most of the time. Being able to communicate through writing is important with any
career, especially management. I am very creative as well. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been
into drawing, music, and coming up with new ideas. I am very motivated and I know how to lead
teams. For example, in my Business Ethics class I took it upon myself led a semi–dysfunctional
team and we achieved a good grade in the class. I am also a perfectionist, which is good but can
easily backfire on me. Where I See My Management Weaknesses One of my weaknesses might be
that I'm an introvert. To address the introvert/extravert issue; I'd say I'm more of an introvert.
Some of my favorite authors including Zig Ziglar and Grant Cardone identify themselves as
introverts although they come across as strong extraverts. Mr. Ziglar said something that made
me want to get into sales. He said that introverts make better salespeople because they can relate
to the customer better, research what the customer wants, and adopt characteristics that an
extravert has. On my spare time I read books like "Sell or be sold" by Grant Cardone, "See you at
the top" by Zig Ziglar, "Live your dreams" by Les Brown, and of course "The War of Art" by Steven
Pressfield. All of which motivate me and make me a better person. I view success as my obligation,
duty, and responsibility and I believe it is dangerous to be

Good Readers Good Writers
Nabokov: Providing a Flood and Lifeboat
In Nabokov's 1948 "Good Readers and Good Writers," the reader has the opportunity to view the
possibilities of a beautiful collision of a major reader and a major writer. This piece discusses
reading and writing: skills that have become standardized and slightly devalued as education has
advanced. Literacy has become so expected that little thought is put into what defines a good reader
or writer; Nabokov tackles this idea head on. Nabokov's intention of this piece is to passionately
display a relationship that is formed between a good reader and a good writer, and the essential need
for an open mind. He stresses the vitality of understanding instead of immediately identifying when
reading;...show more content...
Instead Nabokov states: "study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something
brand new, having no obvious connection with the worlds we already know" (1). When approached
in such a manner a major reader can see the new world in its entirety and once it has been explored
and understood then there is room to compare its connections to other worlds and knowledge.
Nabokov uses bold and unafraid language to emphasize his thoughts and chooses to speak only
to those who choose to listen. The lesson he teaches requires the audience to look past personal
comparison and preference. The audience must gain understand and appreciate first; then let
Nabokov's ideas apply to the world of reading and writing they themselves know it. Nabokov
displays this message by refusing to dull any of his thoughts: for example phrases like, "Can
anybody be so naive as to think he or she can learn anything about the past from those... historical
novels?" (1). He still has a definite message but in a lot of sentences and phrases they have a
condescending punch to them. Nabokov uses superlatives such as: "the best temperament for a
reader to have..." (3). As well as opinionated statements such as: "nothing is more boring or more
unfair..." (1). Statements like these can prevent his audience to open their minds because his
language is emotionally provoking. Nabokov purposely tests his audience by using powerful
provoking language

My Greatest Strength When Writing
My greatest strength when writing is brainstorming and coming up with different ideas to write

Next, I write down my ideas on paper. Then, I summarize what I wrote and try to make it better.
Finally, I form sentences and

Growing As A Writer
Growing as a Writer
From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse
portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year
writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a
more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my
horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable
strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful
unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the year

I began writing with basic vocabulary and barely any sentence variety. As the year progressed, I
learned to advance my vocabulary and word choice in addition to incorporating a diversity of
sentence structure. Nearing the end of the school year, I acknowledge that I have grown and
learned more about writing. I anticipate that I will receive even more arduous writing
assignments that require more research and time. Although it will be challenging, I feel confident
that I will do well because I feel well prepared from all I've done this year. As I grow older, I will
have to continue to write. I know I can take the knowledge I've learned this year and apply it to

Write An Essay About You As A Writer
It is the end of this high school year and I am glad to say that I accomplished many things. The idea
of doing a blog was a very successful one, given that I was able to write about what i like and
improve my writing skills. Therefore, I believe that throughout this year I was able to grow as a
writer, express myself better, and expand my knowledge. In addition to my English class, I was
also able to improve my skills in others subjects such as history and theology, in which I had to
write a few paragraphs, but mostly I had to read a lot which definitely expanded my knowledge
and improved my vocabulary. That said, since I was required to write about different subjects, I also
had to improve research skills and my creativity when writing about personal opinions. Overall,
being able to write not only English related papers made me abroad my thoughts and enhance my
writing skills. In the same way, my English papers and blog entries also helped me to become a
better writer. I was very found of my blog posts, not only because it was a reflection on my life but
also because of the effort that I put in it. I procrastinated way less this last quarter by making...show

I am sure that I have improved a lot my writing and reading skills. However, I still have to exceed
on how to organize my thoughts and making better word choice. With that in mind, I'll always be
looking for new ways, such as reading, that will make me a better writer. However, I'm glad to say
that from the beginning of the year until now I outdid myself with significant progress. All that
said, I have the goal to keep on writing during the summer so that I can practice the skills that I
learned. Thus, this year was very important in making me a more insightful person, and a better
writer. For that reason, I hope to keep myself motivated so that I can learn more and more and

How I Became A Better Writer
So I have become a way better writer than how I ever been in my high school career. My
vocabulary has extended dramatically since being in Humanities Amp. I feel that i am a better
writer, I used to use run–on sentences a lot in my essays and any other form of writing. I hate using
big words, i know that means you have a large vocabulary, but i don't really care about that. I feel
that I don't need to show that, but it is good to have it. I feel that i can improve more ,but I have
become a great writer.
The goals i feel like is a more variety of a vocabulary list. I think i can become a stronger writing. I
want people to know that i am a amazing writer and not just a normal writer. To students in the future
that will be having these assignments,

Why I Want To Be A Writer
I want to be a writer when I grow up. Being a writer is hard. The success of your job is dependent
not only on whether you have done it well but also on whether other people think you have done
well. I would like to be a writer. I don't know if I can do it. It's like any other job; you never know
until you try. But few other jobs are as dependent on the opinions of others and on something that
has no basis in fact or logic. One word out of place can tear a whole work apart, and yet a few black
and white words arranged just so can unleash a world of color and feeling. A spark of inspiration
can create a new world from nothing, metaphorically speaking. It is the gift of God. He gives some
people a story to tell and the ability to tell it. Like any gift from God, it is something to be used to
His glory and not taken lightly. To use any gift takes work....show more content...
In college you can major in Creative Writing but many authors recommend that you do not.
Instead, they advise that you study Literature instead, the great works of authors past and present.
If you don't know what is good, how can you write something good yourself? Or you can do this
outside of college and simply read the great works of literature on your own, studying what makes
these writers great, what writing tricks and techniques make up their style. The purpose is not to
copy them; the purpose is to be inspired. To be awriter you must write. This is the most important
piece of advice. Write anything, even if it's as flat as the floor. The more you use words, the more
they become willing to be used by you. The more you write, the more you have something to write.
Writing is both a skill and a gift. It is both acquired and

Great Essay Writers

  • 1. Why I Want To Be A Writer About halfway through my creative writing degree, I had an existential crisis. Ever since I read Letters to a Young Contrarian at the age of thirteen– ignore that I only understood about twenty percent of it at the time – I knew I wanted to be a writer. Christopher Hitchens' words inspired me and sparked a love of literature and intellectual honesty that persists to this day. However, as weeks turned into months in class, I kept thinking, do I even want to be a writer, and if so, what stories do I want to tell? These thoughts remained and grew louder, creating a mental block that impacted my creativity and thus made the plethora of writing assignments I was given more unbearable. It was a vicious cycle that led me down a path of self–reflection Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. John Steinbeck's Greatest Writer Have you ever wondered how someone decides to become a writer? Where do they find the inspiration and the characters for their stories. Not only has his books been made into movies they have become classics and added to school reading lists. • 3. My Greatest Strength As A Writer 1.I think my greatest strength as a writer is that my sound ideas are always clear. The thesis and the body paragraphs in my essay are always supported by evidences and details from the book. In my essay, I always have a decent beginning and ending. 2.The weaknesses I see in my writing are my sentence fluency and conventions. When I am writing an essay, it is difficult for me to have correct grammar and no run–on sentences. 3.I think my sentence fluency has definitely improved since September. In early of school year, I always had a lot of run–on sentences in my essay, then I started to use transition words in my essay since the Shakespeare essay. Transition words significantly eliminated the run–on sentences in my essay. I scored a two Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Strengths And Weaknesses As A Writer Paragraph#1 My history as a writer began when I first joined school mostly in first grade. I had started language arts in first grade and from then on I have been writing even though I am not a fan of writing I will still do the work its just annoying to me. However I do feel like I could learn to enjoy this if a topic were to interest me. Paragraph#2 My strengths and weakness as a writer are after awhile of writing I do get migraines but their not that bad to me I can handle them the biggest issue I have is when I am writing because I had broke my pinky at one point and it freezes up on me sometimes. Another weakness is that my spelling is still not as strong. However a good strength is that I do have a good vocabulary. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. I Am A Good Writer I have never been a good writer as far as I can remember. It has always been that way, no matter what strategies I have employed to improve my writing ability be it making an outline or planning out the paper in any way. It didn't matter if I was doing a research paper, a reflective essay or even a personal narrative. The writing that I had done in middle school and high school was by far the worst of it. When I was little, I used to love writing. I would write about anything from dragons to adventures in space, and most of the time it wasn't in any way related to school at all. I used to love writing because I could write about whatever I wanted and had no one to tell me that it was poorly written and no one to give me a bad grade on it. It wasn't until I started to have to write papers for school that I began to dislike writing. I remember when I was ten, I wrote a story about two dragons fighting off hordes of knights attempting to steal the dragons gold for the corrupt king. No one told me that I had to write a story, I wrote it on my own time over the summer and I loved every minute that I was writing. I wrote almost every day, but now that I started to get bad grades on something that I worked so hard on and being told I was an abysmal writer, it began to discourage me and push me away from the enjoyment I used to have when writing. I was a sub–par writer all throughout my time going to school, but it was the worst in my senior year of high school. I went Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Reflection Of My Writing As A Writer After looking back at all the writing I have accomplished in this class and experiences I have faced in other English classes, I realized how they have affected me as a writer and where I stand as one as of now. The writer I am today has been greatly benefited with years of learning English in school and other literacy sponsors. Throughout the years, I have learned a number of ways to write and I have been positively impacted by these methods. I now know the type of writer that I am and how I write best and in under which conditions. Now, I have my own writing process that most likely differs from my peers. A writing process is the steps an individual takes in order to produce a form of writing. According to The Alton L. Wilmer Writing Center, "Creating a successful paper is a different process for everyone. Some writers require complete silence with no distractions, while other crave noise while they work." When conducting a paper, I go through the prewriting, drafting, revision, and editing process. The prewriting process is important to the final draft of my paper since it helps me organize my thoughts in which I can then find the focus of my paper. During the drafting process, I tend to just write everything that comes to mind. It motivates me to keep writing to the point that all my ideas are typed. I then rearrange them where they best flow and make sense. My rough drafts are, as Anne Lamott claims, "a shitty rough draft." When it comes to the revision and editing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Theory of Writing Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in–class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own...show more content... While doing this, I am also learning how to write better as a young adult going into the mature world where writing is key component in everyday life. Lastly, reflection is usually conceived as an after thought. Reflection is known to be more personal to the writer. This is good for a writer to link personal experiences into the writing. Not only is the author reflecting but also the audience too by creating a mental image in their head. Everyone will not have the same reflection because each individual thinks differently about various topics. For instance in the magazine article "Is Google Making us Stoopid?" by Nicholas Carr. Carr explains that Google is something you are researching rather than learning. In the article, Carr explains his reasoning like "When the Net absorbs a medium, that medium is recreated in the Net's image. It injects the medium's content with hyperlinks, blinking ads, and other digital gewgaws, and it surrounds the content with the content of all the other media it has absorbed. A new e–mail message, for instance, may announce its arrival as we're glancing over the latest headlines at a newspaper's site. The result is to scatter our attention and diffuse our concentration." This quote makes me as a reader imagine someone clicking off the screen to another window where the email site is. It also makes me reflect on when I may have done this sort of action. I actually just minimized this paper because I just Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Becoming A Better Writer : Writing Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn't know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It's a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences. This portfolio demonstrates the strongest and the weakest of my writing as a first year college student and as a rising professional of psychology major. As psychology students, we think beyond the norm and obtain enormous amounts of research for proof, similar to English majors. As a result of Columbia College being a liberal art institution, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. I love to read and at one time in my life a friend encouraged me to write stories, I even wrote about some of the unusual dreams that I had. I have three stories started, but they are not complete. Several years later, another friend encouraged me to go back to college after being told at work that I will never be moved from my current position because I do not have a college degree. Since, my friend was doing all her classes virtually, I decided to submit my application to the college that she was attending. I took one class in the fall of last year. I was so nervous because it was primarily written papers. I almost dropped out. My friend encouraged me to try. I had expressed my fears to my instructor and he helped me become a better writer to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper. In the last year, I have had a class that taught me a variety of interesting things about Microsoft office. Within that class I also learned about the research tab in Word. This has become my lifeline in research no matter what style that was chosen. I learned about Purdue OWL and that has been a great resource for the different types of writing that I have done. To ensure that my papers were done correctly, I was introduced to Paper Rater, which can help catch any grammar errors and misspelling errors. It has a lot of interesting things and if paid, will even help detect plagiarism. My greatest strength in writing, I believe, is my ability to be a good story teller. • 10. My Greatest Strengths As A Writer I've always struggled with trying to stay focused on my school work. While it may not look like it on the outside, it is a constant struggle in the inside. My mind is like a jungle gym with a bunch of kids zooming around. Sometimes I would just stare at the screen of my computer hoping the words would just appear themselves, but if that ever happened I probably wouldn't even be here. My brain has these switches in them to tell me to do something else like play a game on your tablet or watch Netflix right when I am writing my essay. It's how my brain works, and there never seems to be a manual switch because it's automatic. My lack of focus caused me to face many obstacles, but through my weaknesses I discovered some of my greatest...show more content... I also have a process when I peer review papers. I make sure to always compliment the student's paper and then I point out some areas where there may need some improvement. I always make sure to provide an example so they know what I am trying to say. My last greatest strength as a writer is my commitment to providing the audience information in a way that can be easily understood. When I was writing my research paper, I had to explain some complicated concepts like 'Bayer demosaicing' and 'photosites.' In my research, I quoted what McHugh explained about the Bayer demosaicing, "Bayer 'demosaicing' is the process of translating this Bayer array of primary colors into a final image which contains full color information at each pixel." Instead of rephrasing the definition I made a comparison, "It's like a coloring book. You decide what colors you want and you determine where they go, but until you've finished completing the coloring you won't see the final results." My comparison also provided a visual representation of how the Bayer demosaicing process works. I think this helps make the concept easier to comprehend because the reader can relate to it. When I write my papers I usually like to talk out loud when I'm writing them because it helps me hear what it sounds like. However, my lack of focus can cause me to make a lot of grammar mistakes such as comma splices. In all my papers, comma splices are the most common grammar mistakes I make. • 11. My Growth As A Writer The Memo will directly address my growth as a writer throughout my time in EH 101–13. It will also highlight my current strengths and weaknesses in my own personal writing style. My DevelopmentRhetorical Analysis: This being the first paper I wrote for you, it turned out to be utter garbage. This was my worst essay because I was overconfident in my own writing ability and didn't think I had much room to improve on. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper was riddled with comma splices, even after you did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper taught me a great deal on how to think more critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned my greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more of my errors I can continue to improve and move forwards with my writing abilities. Literary Analysis: The Literary Analysis was by far my best essay and the one I most enjoyed writing. The new critical thinking skills I learned in the first essay made writing this paper much easier. I also found the topics of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 13. I Am A Great Writer I'm a great writer. Writing is something that comes naturally to me. I don't even have to think about it most of the time. Being able to communicate through writing is important with any career, especially management. I am very creative as well. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been into drawing, music, and coming up with new ideas. I am very motivated and I know how to lead teams. For example, in my Business Ethics class I took it upon myself led a semi–dysfunctional team and we achieved a good grade in the class. I am also a perfectionist, which is good but can easily backfire on me. Where I See My Management Weaknesses One of my weaknesses might be that I'm an introvert. To address the introvert/extravert issue; I'd say I'm more of an introvert. Some of my favorite authors including Zig Ziglar and Grant Cardone identify themselves as introverts although they come across as strong extraverts. Mr. Ziglar said something that made me want to get into sales. He said that introverts make better salespeople because they can relate to the customer better, research what the customer wants, and adopt characteristics that an extravert has. On my spare time I read books like "Sell or be sold" by Grant Cardone, "See you at the top" by Zig Ziglar, "Live your dreams" by Les Brown, and of course "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. All of which motivate me and make me a better person. I view success as my obligation, duty, and responsibility and I believe it is dangerous to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Good Readers Good Writers Nabokov: Providing a Flood and Lifeboat In Nabokov's 1948 "Good Readers and Good Writers," the reader has the opportunity to view the possibilities of a beautiful collision of a major reader and a major writer. This piece discusses reading and writing: skills that have become standardized and slightly devalued as education has advanced. Literacy has become so expected that little thought is put into what defines a good reader or writer; Nabokov tackles this idea head on. Nabokov's intention of this piece is to passionately display a relationship that is formed between a good reader and a good writer, and the essential need for an open mind. He stresses the vitality of understanding instead of immediately identifying when reading;...show more content... Instead Nabokov states: "study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something brand new, having no obvious connection with the worlds we already know" (1). When approached in such a manner a major reader can see the new world in its entirety and once it has been explored and understood then there is room to compare its connections to other worlds and knowledge. Nabokov uses bold and unafraid language to emphasize his thoughts and chooses to speak only to those who choose to listen. The lesson he teaches requires the audience to look past personal comparison and preference. The audience must gain understand and appreciate first; then let Nabokov's ideas apply to the world of reading and writing they themselves know it. Nabokov displays this message by refusing to dull any of his thoughts: for example phrases like, "Can anybody be so naive as to think he or she can learn anything about the past from those... historical novels?" (1). He still has a definite message but in a lot of sentences and phrases they have a condescending punch to them. Nabokov uses superlatives such as: "the best temperament for a reader to have..." (3). As well as opinionated statements such as: "nothing is more boring or more unfair..." (1). Statements like these can prevent his audience to open their minds because his language is emotionally provoking. Nabokov purposely tests his audience by using powerful provoking language Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. Growing As A Writer Growing as a Writer From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer. • 17. Write An Essay About You As A Writer It is the end of this high school year and I am glad to say that I accomplished many things. The idea of doing a blog was a very successful one, given that I was able to write about what i like and improve my writing skills. Therefore, I believe that throughout this year I was able to grow as a writer, express myself better, and expand my knowledge. In addition to my English class, I was also able to improve my skills in others subjects such as history and theology, in which I had to write a few paragraphs, but mostly I had to read a lot which definitely expanded my knowledge and improved my vocabulary. That said, since I was required to write about different subjects, I also had to improve research skills and my creativity when writing about personal opinions. Overall, being able to write not only English related papers made me abroad my thoughts and enhance my writing skills. In the same way, my English papers and blog entries also helped me to become a better writer. I was very found of my blog posts, not only because it was a reflection on my life but also because of the effort that I put in it. However, I'm glad to say that from the beginning of the year until now I outdid myself with significant progress. All that said, I have the goal to keep on writing during the summer so that I can practice the skills that I learned. I feel that i am a better writer, I used to use run–on sentences a lot in my essays and any other form of writing. I hate using big words, i know that means you have a large vocabulary, but i don't really care about that. I feel that I don't need to show that, but it is good to have it. I feel that i can improve more ,but I have become a great writer. The goals i feel like is a more variety of a vocabulary list. I think i can become a stronger writing. • 19. Why I Want To Be A Writer I want to be a writer when I grow up. Being a writer is hard. The success of your job is dependent not only on whether you have done it well but also on whether other people think you have done well. I would like to be a writer. I don't know if I can do it. It's like any other job; you never know until you try. But few other jobs are as dependent on the opinions of others and on something that has no basis in fact or logic. One word out of place can tear a whole work apart, and yet a few black and white words arranged just so can unleash a world of color and feeling. A spark of inspiration can create a new world from nothing, metaphorically speaking. It is the gift of God. He gives some people a story to tell and the ability to tell it.
