After the BA team in our company grew from 15 to 40 members, with most of them freshly out of university, and with all of us spread out on different projects, we knew it was critical to develop a place where we could all become closer colleagues, learn from each other and actively work to increase the standard of business analysis practices in our company and wider. Knowing that practice makes perfect and that it’s better to learn from others’ mistakes, we established a Center of Competence and we want to share with you how we managed to: - Improve sharing the knowledge within the BA team and increase the quality of BA work. - Speed up the onboarding of new team members and helping them do their work in the optimal way. - Nurture the culture of providing constructive feedback.

Since the decision of the Flemish government in 2015 to establish a shared HR service center for all Flemish departments and agencies, this HR agency (“AgO”) is growing every year, welcoming new HR staff every time. To tackle the challenges that accompany this huge transformation, such as the integration of new staff in the organisation and the alignment and standardisation of processes while keeping all operations running, AgO decided to become a process oriented organisation, focussing on the power of processes. Good software is not only error-free software, but more importantly software that does what the customer needs. This seems obvious, but in reality, the communication gap between business professionals and software development teams still causes a loss of time, money and good will. Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) tries to bridge the gap between the different stakeholders. At UCLL, we started a research project to promote this methodology with Belgian companies. We are strong believers and try to find out why BDD it is not more widely used. The goal is to develop an ‘implementation model’, a set of best practices, do’s and don’ts, helping companies to successfully distill high-quality specifications that can guide the development and testing process from the start of a project. We would love to share our experiences, talk about the problems we come across, and discuss the way we handle them.

As business analysts we often hear the business complain about the IT department and their solutions. The IT department, for example, is often found to be unresponsive enough, whereas their solutions often don't capture the actual complexity of a problem. On the other hand, we hear the IT department complain about a continuously increasing workload. Using the capabilities of Model Driven Engineering, the realization of software using modeling tools alone, we enable both parties to focus on their own domain, decreasing the gap between them. In this topic we will discuss how case management, business process management and decision management can be applied effectively in low code platforms to enable the business to define and maintain their business logic and how to enthuse the IT department about such platforms.

Organizations embarking on the data management journey often complain about yet another management framework to take into account, expecting more work, more overhead, more investment, and less agility. They couldn’t be further from the truth. In this talk, Bas will show that there is a vast body of practical guidance (theory, cases) that can be leveraged for building a data management capability. Despite years of efforts to improve the professional approach to developing software systems, many of these projects continue to fail. Investigations into these failures invariably denote poor interactions between humans, both within development teams and with customers and users, as a key factor. Recent evolution in development approaches, like human-centered design and extreme programming, try to address this problem, but until now, an overall view was missing. In this presentation I integrate these initiatives into a simple model, that arranges six key skills along two axes (customer–team and problem–solution) around communication as a core. When we received a future business process description using a conventional process diagram in order to represent an overview of the requirements for a financial advisory tool, we felt that business analysts did not want us - the user experience specialists - to start with "our" work. We convinced them to use a series of 3 workshops implementing scenario-based development (tell the story of the process from the users' perspective) and a special design-studio technique (visually brainstorm on most difficult design challenges) to their project procedure. The result was a more qualified future business process, a deeper understanding of the context of use and a tangible paper prototype, ready to be tested by and with users.
