Which fruit conducts more electricity Apple or grapefruit ? By Shnutez Doddipalli 5 th Grade Teacher-Mrs.Hicks
Notefacts Apples also contain a acid which is called malic acid 1 Apples contain maleic acid 1 Apples are about 80% water 1 Conduction is when a material allows electricity to flow through it 2 Some objects that has the ability to flow electricity are called conductors 2 A grapefruit contains acid which is a kind of liquid 3 Grapefruits acid depend on the age they are 3 Objects that can’t conduct electricity are called insulators 2 Some examples of insulators are wood, plastic and cardboard 2 Grapefruits are almost 90% water 3 Some examples of conductors are copper, steel, gold, and water 2 A grapefruit is 70% citric acid 3
Apple Acid Apples are mostly of water and acids. Apples are about 80% water. Apples also contain acids which are called malic and maleic. Apples have acids as their nutrients. Both acids are high in unripen apples than in the ripen apples. Maleic acid does not dissolve a lot in water. Malic acid was first collected in apple juice. Fun fact: Malic acid can also be found in grapes.
Grapefruit Acid A grapefruit contains acid which is a kind of liquid. Grapefruits acid depend on the age they are. Grapefruits contain 90% water and 70% citric acid. A example of citric acid is the red liquid in the grapefruit. The grapefruit had the amount of water which is shown in the bowl picture. Grapefruits acid acts as a medicine. Fun Fact: It used to be called the forbidden fruit.
Conduction Conduction is when a material allows electricity to flow through it easily. Some objects that has the ability to flow electricity are called conductors. Objects that cannot flow electricity are called insulators. Some examples of insulators are wood, plastic and cardboard. Some examples of conductors are copper, steel, gold, and water. Conductors Insulators
Procedure First get all the material. Wires, light bulb, Second , put the wire through the apple slice. You should have 3 wires. Than connect the wire to the light bulb holder. Then connect the wire to the battery. You should have a complete circuit. Then the light bulb should light up. Then the watt reader should tell the amount of electricity.
Materials Apples Grapefruits Light bulb and battery Wires
Independentand dependent variables The independent variable for the experiment is the fruit because it has to change to test which is able to conduct more electricity. The dependent variable is the amount of electricity conducted by each fruit because each fruit conducts a different amount of electricity.
Apple Conduction
Grapefruit Conduction
Results and Conclusion The Grapefruit’s circuit bulb shined brighter than the apple’s. The grapefruit had about .35 watts lit up and the apple had about 0.30 watts. So the Grapefruit conducts more electricity than the Apple. My hypothesis was right because my hypothesis was that the grapefruit would conduct more electricity because it contains more water and acid than the apple.
