• The School Day of Peace and Non-Violence
was first celebrated in 1964.
• El día escolar de la paz y la no violencia se
celebró por primera vez en 1964.
• It is observed on January 30, on the
anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi.
• Se celebra el 30 de enero, aniversario de la
muerte de Mahatma Gandhi.

• Its objective is to educate for and about
tolerance, solidarity, agreement and
respect for Human Rights, non-violence
and peace.

6. Message- Mensaje
• The basic message of this day is: “Universal
Love, Non-Violence and Peace. Universal Love is
better than egoism, Non-violence is better than
violence, and Peace is better than war”.

8. Peacemakers
Thousands of people have contributed
throughout history to make world a better
place to live. Many of them are people like you
or me who remain unknown, but our role on
earth is not irrelevant. Our individual
contributions at home, schools, or neighbours,
our ability to forgive, understand and respect
others are those that make a difference in our
lives and the history of human beings.

9. Peacemakers
Miles de personas han contribuido a través de
la historia a convertir el mundo en un lugar
mejor. Muchos son desconocidos, como tú y
como yo, pero nuestro papel no es irrelevante.
Nuestras pequeñas aportaciones en casa, en el
instituto, en el barrio…., nuestra capacidad de
perdonar, comprender y respetar a los demás,
son las que marcan la diferencia en nuestras
vidas y en la historia de los seres humanos.

10. Peacemakers
Others have become internationally known. Writers,
politicians, religious leaders, philosophers, singers…. Some,
not all, have been awarded Nobel Peace Prizes.
Otros han alcanzado reconocimiento internacional:
escritores, políticos, líderes religiosos, filósofos, cantantes,
misioneros… Algunos, no todos, han sido premiados con
un Nobel de la Paz.

11. Nobel Peace Prizes
The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded
93 times to 124 Nobel Laureates between
1901 and 2012, 100 individuals and 24
organizations.

15. The Olive branch
• The olive tree has always been
a valuable source of food and
oil. But no one knows for sure
when or why it began to
symbolise peace. There is
probably a connection with
ancient Greece. Wars between
states were suspended during
the Olympic Games, and the
winners were given crowns of
olive branches.

16. The Olive branch
• Whatever the history, the
olive branch is a part of
many modern flags
symbolising peace and
unity.
• One well-known example
is the United Nations
symbol.

17. The Dove
The dove has been a symbol
of peace and innocence for
thousands of years in many
different cultures.
But it was Pablo Picasso who
made the dove a modern
symbol of peace when he
used it on a poster for the
World Peace Congress in
1949.

18. The rainbow
The rainbow is another ancient
and universal symbol, often
representing the connection
between human beings and
their gods. Nowadays the
rainbow is used by many
popular movements for peace
and the environment,
representing the possibility of a
better world in the future and
promising sunshine after the
rain.

19. Mistletoe
• This plant was sacred in
many cultures, generally
representing peace and love.
• The ancient Druids believed
that hanging mistletoe in
your doorway protected you
from evil spirits. Tribes would
stop fighting for a period of
time if they found a tree with
mistletoe.

20. The ankh
The ankh is an ancient symbol which
was adopted by the hippie movement
in the 1960s to represent peace and
love. It was found in many Asian
cultures, but is generally associated
with ancient Egypt. It represented life
and immortality. Egyptians were
buried with an ankh, so that they
could continue to live in the
'afterworld'.

21. CND Logo
This is one of the most
widely known symbols in
the world. It was designed
in 1958 by Gerald Holtom
as the logo of the
Campaign for Nuclear
Disarmament (CND).
Nowadays, it is an
international peace
symbol.

22. The “V” hand signal
• The V sign has various
meanings, depending on
the cultural context and
how it is presented.
• It was adopted by the
1960s counterculture
movement as a sign for
peace (with palm
outward)

37. Peace Songs
Many songs have been created around the
concept of “peace”. Two of the most
popular were written during the Vietnam
war: 1971 “Peace Train" by Yusuf Islam (Cat
Stevens) and John Lenon’s 1969 hit "Give
Peace A Chance”, which became an anthem
of the American anti-war movement in the
70s.
