The love potion in A Midsummer Night's Dream, by María Lago and Ana Misa. IES Pedro Floriani, Redondela, Interdepartamental Project 2015-16. Department of Philosophy, Department of English
2. It was a white flower, touched by one of the
Cupid´s arrows, with turned it purple and
gave it its magic quality. When dripped
into someone´s eyes this love potion
causes an individual to fall madly in love
with the first person they see. William
Shakespeare uses this flower as a plot
device to introduce the comical
disturbance and chaos of love, but also
highlight the illogicality of love.
3. The love potion represents the power of love
that brings everything to the right order.
4. In the play, Puck, a mischievous fairy also known as
Robin Goodfellow, puts in into Titania´s eyes
because Oberon orders him to do it. Then, he
pours the potion on Lysander´s eyes, and he falls
in love of Helena. Titania wakes up and she sees an
ass and she falls in love with him.
The love potion causes a lot
of changes into the play.
