General Motors Executives 2009 - 2010
Chief Executive Officers Rick Wagoner June 2001 – March 2009 Ed Whitacre December 2009 – Present Fritz Henderson March – December 2009 Bankruptcy
Ed Whitacre Ed Whitacre was hand picked to chair GM’s board after bankruptcy by Steven Rattner, head of the US Treasury Dept Automotive Task Force. Whitacre is former chairman and CEO of AT&T, and predecessor Southwestern Bell, where he built the smallest ‘Baby Bell’ into the world’s largest telecommunications company. He’s implemented radical shakeups in upper management at GM, changing structural organization and personnel. There have been at least 30 managers hired, fired, or reassigned since Whitacre took office last year. His tough, hands-on approach is giving GM exactly what the Treasury asked for: change. July 10:Chairman of New GM December 1:interim CEO January 25:Chairman & CEO Bankruptcy
Fritz Henderson Continuing the legacy of Rick Wagoner and the GM survival plan laid out before Congress leading up to GM’s bankruptcy, Henderson led the charge to sell GM’s European unit Opel/Vauxhall. New GM emerged from bankruptcy in July ‘09 with a shuffled boardroom rejecting that strategy. In Nov. ‘09 the New GM board deemed Opel more asset than liability, announcing the division would not be sold. Later in Nov. the Saab sale to Koenigsegg collapsed, sealing Henderson’s fate. The new board asked Henderson to resign shortly thereafter, leaving the company’s helm to new-hire and Chairman, Ed Whitacre. President and COO December 1:Resigned February:Hired as consultant, GM International Operations March 29:CEO Bankruptcy
Rick Wagoner GM went from peak sales volume to imminent bankruptcy during Wagoner’s tenure at the head of the company. The U.S. Treasury’s Automotive Task Force demanded Wagoner’s resignation as a condition of financial aid for GM. At the time of Wagoner’s departure, GM had requested $26 billion in federal aid, half the amount GM would eventually receive. Among key decisions that lead to GM’s ultimate bankruptcy, Wagoner’s regime bet –and lost– heavily on large trucks and SUVs. Wagoner had been CEO for nearly nine years and at GM for more than 30. June 2000: CEO May 2003 - March 2009:Chairman and CEO Bankruptcy
Chief Marketing Officers Mark LaNeve Old GM Joel Ewanick May 2010 – Present Susan Docherty December 2009 – May 2010 Bob Lutz July – December 2009 Bankruptcy
Joel Ewanick General Motors swept aside marketing chief Susan Docherty to make way for the arrival of Joel Ewanick, the marketing whiz who helped Hyundai soar to new heights– notably, he implemented the Assurance program. Ewanick's appointment, however, was a stunner. Nissan had just stolen Ewanick away from Hyundai in March 2010, but obviously his feet had barely touched ground on Nissan soil -- if at all -- when GM made its move. One of Ewanick’s first moves was to hire ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, cancelling a month-old agreement with Chevrolet’s ad agency Publicis Worldwide, which a month-prior had de-throned 91 year incumbent Campbell-Ewald. May:VP, US Marketing Bankruptcy
Susan Docherty Docherty’s short tenure as chief of marketing ended on May 5 with the announcement that Joel Ewanick had been scalped from Nissan to lead GM’s marketing efforts. Last Fall she was given a VP title and responsibility for US Sales– a job taken over six months later by new GM North America president Mark Reuss. She landed a job in China on May 24 as part of GM’s international team, replacing Don Johnson who was left with no assignment. June 10:VP, International Operations Sales, Marketing & Aftersales Oct 2009:VP, US Sales December 2009: VP, US Sales, Service & Marketing June 2008: General Manager, Buick-Pontiac-GMC March 2010:VP, US Marketing May 2010: VP, ??? Bankruptcy
Bob Lutz 2005 – April 2009:Vice Chairman, Global Product Development April 2009:Sr. Advisor, Global Design & Key Product Initiatives. Announces retirement at end of year. July 23, 2009: Vice Chairman, Marketing & Comm. Agrees to stay at New GM beyond 2009. December 2009:Vice Chairman, Advisor on Design & Global Product Development May 2010:Retirement… Bankruptcy
Mark LaNeve Mark LaNeve headed up sales and marketing for General Motors until the company went insolvent. LaNeve was stripped of his marketing and service duties as the New GM emerged from bankruptcy, a sign of times to come for incumbent executives. In October LaNeve announced his departure from GM and the auto industry, having landed the chief marketing job at insurance company Allstate Corp. July 10: VP, US Sales VP, US Sales, Service & Marketing October 15: Resigned Bankruptcy
Chief Sales Officers Mark LaNeve 2005 – October 2009 Mark Reuss March 2010 – Present Susan Docherty October 2009 – March 2010 Bankruptcy
Mark Reuss Mark Reuss began his career at GM in 1983 as a student intern, having moved up the ranks to North American President in December 2009. After three months as president, Reuss implemented one of GMs most disruptive management restructurings since bankruptcy, eliminating brand general managers and taking direct control of sales. March 2010: Takes over US sales in management shakeup October 2009:VP Global Vehicle Engineering December 2009:President of GM North America President & Managing Director, GM Holden Bankruptcy
Susan Docherty Docherty inherited GMs sales administration with the resignation of Mark LaNeve from the position. Her short tenure as chief of sales would see also see the gain and loss of marketing and service duties during subsequent management restructurings. Steven Rattner, former head of the government’s automotive task force, asked former CEO Rick Wagoner to cede his job to Henderson and named Kresa interim chairman in March 2009 after GM had burned through $34 billion in cash over five quarters.
Only five of the 13 current Board members were on the Old GM Board; the two longest-standing members, Kent Kresa and Philip Laskawy, joined the Board in 2003. Kresa served as interim Chairman for three months following the resignation of Rick Wagoner.
Five of NewGM’s 7 board members that were added in July 2009, including Ed Whitacre, were picked by Obama administration auto task force leaders Steven Rattner, Harry J. Wilson and Ron Bloom.
Both executives on the current Board, Ed Whitacre and Stephen Girsky, joined the board as non-executives.,[object Object]

GM Executives During Bankruptcy

  • 2. Chief Executive Officers Rick Wagoner June 2001 – March 2009 Ed Whitacre December 2009 – Present Fritz Henderson March – December 2009 Bankruptcy
  • 3. • 4. • 5. • 6. Chief Marketing Officers Mark LaNeve Old GM Joel Ewanick May 2010 – Present Susan Docherty December 2009 – May 2010 Bob Lutz July – December 2009 Bankruptcy
