States of Water and
Temperature
States of Water and
Temperature
• Matter can change from one state to another.
• A phase change happen when a physical change from
one state of matter to another. For example, from solid to
liquid or from gas to liquid.
• A specific combinations of temperature and surrounding
pressure needed to change from one state or phase to
another.
• Most of the cases, the pressure is atmospheric pressure,
so temperature is the determining factor to the change
from one state to another.
States of Water and
Temperature
• The temperature of a material will increase or decrease
until it reaches the point where the change takes place
and It will stay at that temperature until that change is
completed.
• Boiling and freezing are names given to the various
changes in states of matter.

Temperature
States of Water and
Temperature
Melting
• Melting is happening when a solid is heated, its
temperature rises until it keep increasing until it reaches
the melting point.
• Then, the temperature of the material will set the same
and be until all of the material is melted.
• For example, if you try to melt some ice, its temperature
will rise until it reaches 0° C (32° F), then it will stay at
that temperature until all the ice is melted completely.
The heat energy is used to melt the ice.
Boiling
• Boiling means that when a liquid is heated, its
temperature rises until it reaches its boiling point.
• Then the temperature will remain at that point until all of
the liquid is boiled away and changed to steam.
• For example, the temperature of the water will increase
until it reaches 100° C (212° F), It will stay there until all
the water is changed to steam. Then, the temperature of
the steam can be increased.
Boiling
Cooling
• Cooling means when a gas ,steam on water, is cooled, its
temperature will drop until it reaches the condensation
point.
• Any additional cooling or decreasing in the temperature
will not lower the temperature until all of the gas or steam
is condensed into water. Then the temperature of the
liquid will continue to drop. Once the water reaches the
freezing point, the temperature will remain the same until
all of the liquid is solidified.
• Then the temperature of the ice can continue to
decrease.
