Math Gap-Minder: Patterns and trends of HIV on the Human Population
1. Patterns and
Trends of HIV on the
human population
What is HIV?
Also called: human
immunodeficiency
virus, acquired
immunodeficiency
syndrome. HIV
damages the
immune system,
interfering with the
body's ability to
fight infections.

SETUP UNDER THE UNITED NATIONS
MILLENNIUM GOALS PROJECT.
IT AIMS TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLD
BY RAISING AWARENESS THROUGH
STATISTICS & OTHER INFORMATION.
3. WHAT ARE DYNAMIC AND
BUBBLE GRAPHS
Gapminder uses dynamic/bubble graphs for
displaying worldwide data on different topics.
Each bubble on the graph represents a single
column on the x-axis and multiple rows on the y-axis.
When the user hovers on a bubble, it displays
information about a country on the respective topic.

5. EXPLORING HIV ON
GRAPH
I plan to choose Qatar and Zimbabwe as my targets for this
study. I choose Zimbabwe and Qatar because I feel that the
HIV levels of these two countries are completely different.
The graph and statistics suggest the countries are complete
opposite of each other with respect to HIV levels.
I will construct a time-series graph for both the countries
to show their HIV trends and look for patterns in time.
I will compare them in one graph to show the difference of
HIV levels.

9. ANALYSIS
In the graph, Zimbabwe
has shown growth in HIV
levels straight from 1980
straight till 1998. The
graph then declines until
2000.
Growth-From 0.01-26.5%
Decay-From 26.5-25.7%
Qatar has shown consistencycy
in its HIV levels. They have
appreciated (0.01% to 0.06%)
from 1980 until 1991.
From there, the levels neither
risen nor fallen.

10. WHAT DID I DO?
Qatar has constantly kept its HIV levels at a lower level while
Zimbabwe has shown major fluctuations. Qatar HIV level haven’t
risen from 0.06% since 2010. It has remained stable and
constant.
HIV levels in Qatar rose from 0.00% to 0.06% in 11 years.
Zimbabwe showed a massive 10% growth in that same time
period. It then slightly decreases by 0.8% over a period of two
years.
According to the Gapminder HIV dynamic graph, the income of a
person in Qatar is much higher than that of a person in
Zimbabwe. This suggests that Qatar people have much more
disposable income on healthcare than the people of Zimbabwe.
11. Qatar has taken many steps towards
treating HIV in its country. It’s consistent
HIV levels are the result of its awareness
campaigns and advanced healthcare. It’s
funding comes from its oil industry(OPEC)
Qatar still needs to
improve on its research
and evaluation techniques.
This factor is vital because
if a new disease breaks out
the people will be aware of
its symptoms and can find
ways to prevent them.

12. Map showing the
distribution of HIV
HIV & ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe has been prevalent
with HIV ever since the 4th quarter
of the 21st century. Right now, more
than 1,300,000 people aged between
15 & 49 are suffering from HIV.
GDP of Zimbabwe-
7.366 billion US$
Zimbabwe is doing everything
it can to tackle HIV. However,
it is facing major drawbacks
with donor funding, because of
its fairly weak economy. This
drawback will further affect
the distribution of drugs in the
country and affect overall
health.
