The beautiful landscapes of the lake
district inspiredthe young Wordsworth .
Nature is a common theme that can be
foundin many of his poems
The Rainbow
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural
piety.William
Wordsworth
 In 1791 he
visited France.
There he fell in
love with a
French women
AnnetVallon.
And they had a
child Caroline
Early Works
In 1793, Wordsworth’s first works, An Evening
Walk
and Descriptive Sketches, were published but
received little notice.
“Where, bosom'd deep, the shy Winander peeps
Mid' clust'ring isles, and holly-sprinkl'd steeps;
Where twilight glens endear my Esthwaite's shore,
And memory of departed pleasures, more.”
From An Evening Walk
“We Were Three Persons With One
Soul.”
In 1794,
Wordsworth was
reunited with his
sister, Dorothy;
shortly after, he met another
poet, Samuel Taylor
Coleridge, and
they became close friends.
Quote from Lyrical Ballads
"Poetry is the breath and finer
spirit of all knowledge; it is the
impassioned expression which is in
the countenance of all Science.“
William Wordsworth
Lyrical Ballads
Wordsworth and his close friend
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
with the help of Dorothy
produced ‘LYRICAL BALLARDS.’
It was an important work
in the English
‘ROMANTIC MOVEMENT’
What Is Romanticism?
 Use of creative imagination
 Focus on nature
 Importance of myth and symbolism
 Focus on feelings and intuition
 Freedom and spontaneity
 Simple language
 Personal experience democracy and liberty
 Fascination with the past
Mr. and Mrs. Wordsworth
In 1802,
Wordsworth
married Mary
Hutchinson in the
Brompton Church.
She was the
inspiration for his
poem, “She Was A
Phantom of Delight.”
“She was a Phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely Apparition, sent
To be a moment's ornament;
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;
Like Twilight's, too, her dusky hair;”
Wordsworth in Sorrow
By 1810, they had
five children;
however, two of
their deaths in
1812 caused
Wordsworth great
sorrow. His poem,
“Surprised By
Joy,” reflects his
anguish.
“…That thought's return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever
bore,
Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn,
Knowing my heart's best treasure was no
more;
That neither present time, nor years
unborn
Could to my sight that heavenly face
restore.”
