Sun Protection,[object Object],Afreen Pappa, MD,[object Object],JAVᾹNI Med Spa,[object Object],March 29, 2008,[object Object],Fort Bend Teen Service League,[object Object]
Goals,[object Object],At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will:,[object Object],Understand the effect of UV rays on skin,[object Object],Be able to both define SPF and know the minimum recommended value for SPF,[object Object],Identifyrisk factors for sun damage,[object Object],Identify ways to reduce the risk of sun damage,[object Object],List things that minimize risk of sun damage,[object Object]
Why is sun protection important?,[object Object],What are the benefits of sunlight?,[object Object],What are the risks?,[object Object]
How many of you use a form of sun protection when at the:,[object Object],Beach,[object Object],Park,[object Object],Afterschool activities,[object Object],Walking the dog,[object Object]
Let’s see what you know (or don’t),[object Object],1. If you use plenty of sunscreen, you can stay in the sun as long as you'd like.,[object Object],A. True,[object Object],B. False,[object Object]
2. Which of the following surfaces reflects,[object Object],ultraviolet rays?,[object Object],A. Snow,[object Object],B. Sand,[object Object],C. Ice,[object Object],D. Water,[object Object],E. All of the above,[object Object]
3. You don't need to protect or cover your skin,[object Object],on cloudy days.,[object Object],True,[object Object],False,[object Object]
4. Wearing white during hot weather protects you from sun damage because light-colored clothing reflects light, rather than absorbing it.,[object Object],True ,[object Object],False,[object Object]
5. Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least:,[object Object],5,[object Object],10,[object Object],15,[object Object],30,[object Object]
6. Darker lenses on sunglasses offer better protection from ultraviolet rays than do lighter sunglass lenses.,[object Object],True ,[object Object],False,[object Object]
7. Sunbathing or sun tanning once in a while won't hurt your skin.,[object Object],True ,[object Object],False,[object Object]
8. The darker your skin color, the less you need to worry about sun protection.,[object Object],True ,[object Object],False,[object Object]
Physics,[object Object],Sunlight,[object Object],Total spectrum of the Electromagnetic Radiation given off by the sun,[object Object],Electromagnetic Radiation,[object Object],The full range of wavelengths that makeup light (visible and non-visible),[object Object],Light waves are fluctuations of electric and magnetic fields,[object Object]
Electromagnetic Spectrum,[object Object]
Ultraviolet Rays,[object Object],Band of sun rays,[object Object],5% of sunlight that reaches the earth,[object Object],Reflects off of water, snow, sand and ice,[object Object],Three types,[object Object],UVA,[object Object],UVB,[object Object],UVC,[object Object]
UVA,[object Object],90% reaches the earth on a cloudy day,[object Object],Not blocked by window glass,[object Object],Penetrates light clothing,[object Object],Penetrates deeper into the skin,[object Object],Has more long-term effects than UVB,[object Object]
UVB,[object Object],“B” for burn,[object Object],Cloud cover provides some protection,[object Object],Intensity varies ,[object Object],Time of day,[object Object],Season,[object Object],Altitude,[object Object],Weather,[object Object]
UVC,[object Object],Most rays are absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere,[object Object],More dangerous than UVA and UVB,[object Object],Causes serious damage to DNA,[object Object]
How does Ultraviolet Radiation affect the skin?,[object Object],Sunburns -- the most common and acute response ,[object Object],Photoaging – the leading cause of skin aging; damage begins as early as in one’s 20’s,[object Object],Cancer – ultraviolet radiation is a known carcinogen (cancer causing agent),[object Object],The effect is cumulative; the more time spent unprotected in the sun over your lifetime, the greater the risks.,[object Object]
Melanin,[object Object],Skin’s protective sun filter,[object Object],Natural pigment,[object Object],Acts as a shield against the sun’s ultraviolet rays,[object Object],Greater in populations that live in area with greater sun intensity (Africa, Latin America, India),[object Object]
Skin type,[object Object]
Sun Protection
Sun Protection
Skin Cancer,[object Object],The most common form of cancer in the US,[object Object],1 million new cases are diagnosed yearly,[object Object],1 in 5 Americans and 1 in 3 Caucasians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime,[object Object],>90% of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure,[object Object],The risk for skin cancer doubles if a person has had 5 or more sunburns,[object Object]
Tanning Beds,[object Object],Newer high pressure sun lamps can emit UVR in doses 15 times that of the sun,[object Object],Occasional use of tanning beds almost triples the chance of developing melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer; the use of tanning beds before the age of 35 increases the risk for melanoma by 75%,[object Object],People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell cancer and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell cancer,[object Object],On an average day, more than 1 million people in the US tan in tanning salons; 70% are Caucasian women ages 16-49.,[object Object]
Who is at risk?,[object Object],Everyone,[object Object]
EVERYONe,[object Object]
SPF -- Sun Protection Factor,[object Object],A rating system developed by the FDA to describe the level of sun protection provided by a sunscreen,[object Object],For example: an SPF of 30 allows an individual to stay out in the sun 30 times as long as without the sunscreen before developing the same reddening of the skin.,[object Object]
Sunscreen,[object Object],SPF 15 blocks approximately 93 percent of all incoming ultraviolet rays,[object Object],SPF 30 blocks 97 percent,[object Object],SPF 50 blocks 99 percent,[object Object],AAD and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommend a minimum SPF of 15,[object Object],Reapply every 2 hours (even on cloudy days), especially after swimming or sweating,[object Object]
Sunscreen Recommendations,[object Object],Broad spectrum providing protection from,[object Object],UVA,[object Object],UVB,[object Object],Apply 30 minutes before sun exposure,[object Object],Reapply every 2 hours,[object Object],Reapply immediately after swimming, toweling off or excess sweating,[object Object],Use 1 ounce each time ,[object Object]
Sunscreens,[object Object],Physical,[object Object],Made of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,[object Object],Protect against UVA and UVB,[object Object],Prevent rays from being absorbed,[object Object],Chemical,[object Object],Mexoryl protects against UVA and UVB,[object Object],Avobenzoneor Oxybenzone protect against UVA OR UVB,[object Object],Absorb rays before they can do damage,[object Object]
Sun Protection
Sunscreens,[object Object],Cream formulations ,[object Object],Contribute to destruction of coral reefs due to chemicals,[object Object],Mineral based sun protection (Colorescience® Sunforgettable) do not have chemicals that affect the environment,[object Object]
Skin Cancer Foundation Recommends,[object Object],Window film,[object Object],Sunscreens with UVA and UVB protection,[object Object],Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection,[object Object],Self tanners,[object Object],Sun protective clothing and fabric,[object Object],Makeup, lip balm and moisturizers with a sunscreen,[object Object],Umbrellas,[object Object],For more information and to learn more about the “Go With Your Own Glow” campaign go to www.skincancer.org,[object Object]
