 Iodine is a member of the the halogen group of elements GROUP
17 of the periodic table, FORMERLY GROUP VIIA, along
with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and astatine.

 Discovered in 1811 by Courtois.

 They were given the name halogen from the Greek hals, salt, and gen,
to produce, because they all produce sodium salts of similar properties,
the best known being sodium chloride, table salt.

Halogens have 7 electrons in their outer orbit. They require one electron to complete their outer
orbit and become stable, so they constantly trying to get one electron & hence these halogen
remedies are very active, restless, excited and anxious. Halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine,
iodine, astatine

Its name comes from Greek word iodes, violet, and refers to the vapour it gives when
heated.

It destroys coloring matters, but only slowly; upon organic tissues, the skin, paper, etc., It
produces a yellow-brown stain, which disappears after a while under the influence of heat,
if the contact had not been too prolonged. Its specific gravity is 4.95. In the open air,
iodine volatilizes at the ordinary temperature;
When heated to 107° C. (224.6° f.) It melts, and at 180° C. (356° f.) It boils, evolving a
dense vapor of a magnificent violet-purple tint. This vapor is the heaviest known,
being 8.72 times as heavy as air.

 Properties.-
 Re-sublimed iodine crystallizes in rhombic scales or in orthorhombic octohedrons. It is
bluish-black in color, has a metallic lustre, and in thin sections is red when viewed by
transmitted light. Its odor is somewhat pungent, recalling that of chlorine; its taste is caustic
and acrid. It is soft and easily pulverized. Its chemical affinities are those of chlorine and
bromine, but much weaker, and it is displaced from most of its combinations by either of
these bodies.

Iodine is very slightly soluble in water, 7,000 parts of the latter being required to
take up one of iodine. It dissolves easily in alcohol, ether, carbon disulphide and
chloroform; in the latter two the solutions are of beautiful purple tint, in the former two of
a brown color. It is very soluble in aqueous solutions of iodides.

 Preparation.-
 Iodine is prepared commercially by adding manganese di-oxide and sulphuric acid to
the mother liquor, placing the mixture in a retort and distilling and condensing the
vapors; the process is similar to that used in the preparation of bromine. Sometimes
cyanide of iodine is found in the receivers-in white, needle-shaped crystals, and if the
temperature at which the distillation is conducted be much higher than 100° C. (212° F.),
the product is contaminated with chloride of iodine. Iodine thus obtained may be purified
by washing with a small quantity of water, pressing between folds of bibulous paper,
drying and subliming, or by dissolving it in alcohol, filtering and precipitating with
water.

 Preparation of Homoeopathic Use.-One part by weight of resublimed iodine is
dissolved in ninety-nine parts by weight of alcohol.
 Amount of drug power, 1/100.
 Dilutions must be prepared as directed under Class VII-ß.
 Triturations are prepared as directed under Class VII.

 Dr. Hughes says : "The specific influence of
Iodine upon the glands of the generative organs
would suggest its frequent employment in
morbid states of these glands, especially when
occurring in scrofulous and tubercular subjects”.

 Lack of thyroid hormone [when iodine is adequate] gives rise to myxoedema. Deficiency
of iodine can be caused by reduced dietary intakes, or by excessive intake of anti-thyroid
foods, such as raw vegetables of the brassica family [broccoli, Brussels sprouts,
cabbage, kale, cauliflower, turnip].

These foods contain so-called goitrogens, substances which inhibit the absorption of
iodine. Goitrogens are also present in such vegetables as spinach, lettuce, beets, and
cassava, but are destroyed in cooking.
Lithium, aminosalicylic acid [anti-tuberculosis drug] as well as some sulphur
compounds also interfere with the metabolism of iodine and inhibit the synthesis of
thyroid hormone.

 USES:
 Iodine is used as a disinfectant and germicide; to reduce friction of hard surfaces,
including stainless steel and glass.
 In pharmaceuticals, food supplements, dyes, catalysts, and photography.
 In the USA, Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand and some South American countries
sodium or potassium iodide or potassium iodate is added to table salt to prevent lack
of iodine in the general population. In the UK salt is not iodized.

 USES:
 The radioactive isotope iodine-131, which has a half-life of 8 days, is employed in
medicine to monitor thyroid gland functioning, to treat goitre and thyroid cancer,
and to locate tumours of the brain and of the liver.
 It is also used in investigations to trace the course of compounds in metabolism. Several
iodine compounds are used as contrast mediums in diagnostic radiology.

 TOXICITY:
 Iodine in its elemental form is toxic. Potential symptoms of overexposure
include:
 Irritation of eyes, nose and lungs.
 Lachrymation; headache;
 Tight chest;
 Skin burns, rash;
 Cutaneous hypersensitivity.

 Ingestion of the liquid results in burning pain in mouth and oesophagus;
 Severe corrosive gastroenteritis evidenced by vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea;
 Hypotension,
 Tachycardia,
 Cyanosis, and other signs of shock;
 Headache,
 Dizziness, delirium, collapse, and stupor;

 Death may be due to circulatory collapse,
 Asphyxiation from oedema of glottis,
 Aspiration pneumonia, or pulmonary oedema;
 Late oesophageal and pyloric stenosis have been reported.

Exposure to iodine-131 as a by-product of nuclear reactions can cause thyroid cancer as
shown conclusively by the 26 April 1986 nuclear accident in Chernobyl, Ukraine which
resulted in high level exposure for many people.

absorption.

 It is this power which has made the drug such
a favourite among old-school practitioners as
a paint in all kinds of swellings.
 Given internally its power is much greater :

muscles, fat, tissues, and glands waste away,
and general emaciation is the result.
