Thank you all for gathering here, My name is Anshul. I am going to introduce a new technology that is emerging as fast as it can. And it is called a Raspberry Pi, ohh no this one, this is to eat, I am talking about this one, right here. So, let’s start…
The great scientist of all time once said, “Everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler.” And to bring that into effect I hereby introduce you all to the next big thing called the Raspberry Pi.
The First questions that comes to our mind is what is really a Raspberry Pi? So, for that question I have only one short and sweet answer. This is the smallest computer. Yeah, you heard me right. This little thing over here can do everything a general-purpose computer can do. Beside heavy gaming like FIFA 18, CS:GO, or Crysis 3. But other than that this right here is a very powerful device packed and given to us in a very short size. So, let’s have a look at the specifics.
Let’s go through some more specification that are provided with this little computer. Runs LINUX the most loved Operating System, also a very popular Operating System which is our Windows 10. However, the Windows 10 OS for Raspberry is under – development.
So, here is some more information about RasPi. It was developed by a group of scientist headed by Eben Upton in United Kingdom under a charitable organisation named The Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Computer are the tools of the 21st century. Computer Science is concerned with much more than simply being able to use a computer.
Children should understand how they work and how to program them.
Provides a fun environment for experimenting with programming and electronics.
Inexpensive, simple, open and easy to maintain computer for schools.
Fun computer for children to experiment with at home (programming, robotics, etc.)
The Raspberry Pi consists of Broadcom chip for powering the system integrated with an ARMv6 700 MHz processor to run the device. The Dual Video Core 4 GPU is the main components which grabs the eyes of programmers and enthusiasts, because this is the thing that enables this computer to give 1080p video as output.
The first model released by the Raspberry Pi foundation had only 256 MB RAM, which was felt inadequate by many users. By the way the company now provides up to 1 GB RAM in the newer boards.
One more thing that is very obvious is the storage, so it can support SD card for upto 64 GB.
This is the latest model released by the company named Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. As you can see it’s various components in the picture shown on the slide.
Here we have, 4 USB ports, 2 on both sides to plug keyboard, mouse, gaming controller, or anything with a USB head. Here we have one Ethernet Socket used to connect to local network or to the internet. And here is a 3.5 mm A/V Header for connecting an Audio or Video Output device, such as your earphones. Then we have camera connector, you can attach any digital camera or a GoPro for recording some action. An HDMI port donw here to maximize the fun while watching movies or steaming video contents from the internet. Here’s a little 5V Micro USB to power up this beast. Along with a Micro SD card slot for storage. A display connector to connect it to monitors and all. And the most interesting thing on this boring looking board is the magnificent 40 Pin GPIO Header, you can connect anything – almost anything to this board – using this Header.
GPIO = LED lights, LCD displays, power managers, audio codecs, video cards, Arduino, Thermostat, Accelerator, and what not.
The default operating system installed with this Raspberry Pi is the company’s own made OS, Raspbian. However you can also install various other operating systems like Fedora, Debian, ArchLinux, or our own Windows 10.
A very low cost surveillance camera outside your door can be mounted to keep an eye on the intruders. Just connect a GoPro or a Cheap Camera chip to the RaspPi.
Learning programming with Raspberry Pi is fun. Just connect display device or a monitor to the Pi, and start your basics tutorials, make some programs, so various things.
A Googe Calender is very easy to make, we just need a LCD display, some proper code to feed the Raspberry Pi, and we can hang it on our wall, as an interactive calender and remove that boring paper calencer which we have to flip every month.
PiPad can also be used as a normal tablet, just plug a LCD display and do some coding, prepare some instructions. Feed them into the processor and Voilā your PiPad is ready.
The PiPhone can be used as a normal phone for calling your friends and family. You just need to integrate the network sim with the antenna, and plug a Display with the Raspberry Pi.
Pi can also be used as a media centre to play your favourite Movies, TV shows, Programs, Games, and many more things. Currently XBMC is supporting the Raspberry Pi as the flag bearer for media centre.
XBMC = X Box Media Centre.
Web Server can be created with the Pi, using the minimum specifications used in this setup.
You can also design your own games and play them on the Pi, however for this you need to learn the coding. And also everyone's favourite Minecraft is much more popular to be played on the Pi. There are a bundle of Retro games available to download and play on the Raspberry Pi.
Solar Pack with the Pi can be created using solar sheet and connecting it to the solar cells. They can show the stats for charging a solar cell, with the flat plate absorber.
I think after knowing so much about Raspberry Pi, you might be thinking why is this silly question even being asked?
I mean look at the Pi, it got everything the phone does not got, you can connect external camera, a monitor, a HD TV, LCD display, and you cant do these things with the phone you have. They are not open source, their warranty gets void if I open them, so the Pi is always better.
So to conclude this presentation I would like to say that Sky is the limit with The Raspberry Pi, You can do everything with the pie. Just invent things to do with the Pi. Just don’t eat it. Eat this one instead. This is delicious, and work with this one.
So, here are some websites that helped me to create this presentation. And please visit the these YouTube channels they are awesome. You can find everything related to technology on Linus Tech Tips.
