2. INTRODUCTION
“Technology” is coined from the two Greek words, “techne” and “logos”.
The words mean “art or craft” and “science” respectively. So technology has
been defined as “a discourse upon the arts, pure and applied”. “Educational
technology” is defined as the “development, application and evaluation of
systems, techniques and aids to improve the process of human learning”
(the national council for educational technology). National Centre for
Programmed Learning, UK defined educational technology as “Educational
technology is the application of scientific knowledge about learning and
conditions of learning, to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of
teaching and training.
3. MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Educational technology is a system of 5M’s. Educational technology is a
system in education in which machines, materials, media, men and
methods are interrelated and work together for the fulfilment of specific
educational objectives.”Technology explosion” has yielded several new
machines, materials and media which have great potential for use in the
educational enterprise. A judicious use of these together with new
functions and role of educational personnel can bring about more efficient
and effective teaching-learning. An adequate knowledge of theory and
practices of educational technology and their proper use would enable the
teacher to understand and effectively discharge his new roles in the
educational system in an age of ‘information explosion’, ’knowledge
explosion’, ’population explosion’and ’expectation explosion’.
Educational technology is an applied or practical study which aims at
maximizing educational effects by “controlling” such relevant factors as
educational purpose, educational content, teaching materials, educational
environment, conduct of student, behaviour of instructor and interrelation
between students and instructors. It is a branch of study in which the result
of engineering techniques, information science, natural sciences,
behavioural science and human technology are to be used to promote the
efficiency of education. In practice, the school treasury and administration,
the school and classroom management and the work of instruction
(intellectual education, moral education, counselling) all can make use of
educationaltechnology.
4. OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Hillard Jason has stated the following major objectives of educational
technology:
Transmitting information
Servingas role model
Assisting the practice of specific skills
Contributing to the provision of feedback
Mackenzie and others describe the following four main objectives of
educationaltechnology.
The needsto reach morestudents
To reach them with an improved rangeof learning materials
To offer greater opportunitiesfor independentstudy
To permitat least a limited studentresponse
MACRO LEVEL OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
(OBJECTIVES IN TERMS OF BROAD EDUCATIONAL GOALS)
Identification of educational needsand aspirationsof the community.
Determination of the aims of education, broad strategies and
structureof education.
Developing a suitable curriculum with interaction of arts, human
valuesand sciences.
Identification of man-material resources and strategies for achieving
the desired aims of education.
Developing certain models leading to improvement in the process of
teaching-learning.
Identification of major constraints in the environment and the ways
and meansof tackling them.
5. Assisting in extending vocational opportunities to masses especially
neglected sectors of society.
Managing the entire educational system covering planning,
implementation and evaluation phases.
MICRO LEVEL OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
(OBJECTIVES IN TERMS OF SPECIFIC CLASS-ROOM TEACHING)
Identifying and analysing the characteristics and educational needs
of the students.
Determining the specific classroom objectives and stating them in
behavioural terms.
Analysing the contents of instruction and organising them in proper
sequence.
Identifyingthe available teaching-learning material and resources.
Identifying the nature of the interaction of the sub-systems like
students, teachers, teaching –learning material, content of
instruction and methodologies.
Evaluating the effectiveness of the class-room teaching in terms of
the student’s performanceor change in behaviour.
Providing appropriate feedback to the students as well as teachers to
bring modification in the teaching-learning process.
6. SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. Scope ranges
from the concrete educational process to the most abstract and subtle ones.
It includes the use of hardware and software and systems analysis in
various educational operations. The possibility of using educational
technology in almost all areas of education has been and is being explored.
These are three major areas in education in which its scope is very wide.
These are:
Technology related to general educational administration and
management.
Technology related to general educationaltesting
Technology related to the instructionalprocess
Rowntra (1973) has stated the following as the province of educational
technologists:
Identifyingaim and objectives of learning
Planningthe learning environment
Exploringand structuringthe subject matter
Selecting appropriateteaching strategies and learningmedia
Evaluatingthe effectivenessof the learningsystem
Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their
effectivenessfor future
7. CONCLUSION
Educational technology refers to all applications of technology in the
learning process. It includes all the IT tools, resources and systems in
education as well as the study and advancement of technology-assisted
learning. Advancements in educational technology are not only improving
the learning process through experimentation and data analysis, but also
making it possible for millions of new learners around the world to take
courses.
