Corfu belongs to the Ionian Islands (Eptanisa) and occupies the second
position in terms of extent after Cephalonia, whereas the first one in terms
of population, which according to the 2001 population census comes up to
113,479 inhabitants.
It is the far Northern prefecture of the Ionian Sea with a very favourable
position, as it is situated at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea it succeeds in
being the crossroad between the East and the West.
The city of Corfu is the capital of the island of Corfu, which together with
the Diapontia islands (Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki) in the North-West and
Paxos and Antipaxos in the South-East, constitute a special prefecture.
The extent of the island reaches 592 s.kms, with a length of approximately
62 kms, whereas its width fluctuates from 4-30 kms.
Corfu Geographical Position
The climate of Corfu is temperate, insular and with plenty of rainfalls,
which contribute to its rich vegetation. The soil is very fertile, full of olive
groves and vineyards.
The highest mountain of the island is Pantokrator, which reaches almost
914 metres.
The island produces significant quantities of oil and wine, as well as the
famous traditional products of koum-kouat, mandoles and mandolata.
Also, its pork products and seafood, which are abundant in some areas
such as Palaiokastritsa, Benitses and Boukari, but also in Othonoi. Dishes
of traditional Corfiot cuisine make the traditional lanes (kantounia) flood
with exciting smells.

Eptanisa (the Seven Islands)
The seven big islands of the Ionian sea, which make up
the Eptanisa are Corfu, Cephalonia, Ithaki, Lefkada,
Zante, Paxos and Kythira. Some smaller islands are
also included among them, which all together make up
the Ionian Islands. Some of them are Othonoi,
Erikouses, Echinades, Strofades and Antikythira...
The Eptanisa are the only geographical part of the
Greek nation which had never been enslaved by the
Turks. The inhabitants of the islands fought for their
unification with mother Greece, which took place on
21.05.1864.
Diapondia Islands
Three small islands, covered in green, totally
dependent on Corfu, North-West to the island,
in a distance of 3-7 nautical miles. Their names
are Othonoi, Erikousa and Mathraki. Their total
extent does not overcome 18 kms and their
total population 500 people. Mythology
mentions that Othonoi - which is the biggest in
size of the other two Diapondia islands - is the
island of Kalypso. A cave which is almost 1,5 n.
miles from the port represents the cave of the
nymph, who kept Ulysses for seven whole
years. Transport via Corfu is frequent.
Paxos- Antipaxos
These small islands are approximately 30 n.miles from the port of Corfu
city. The distance between Paxos and Antipaxos does not extend a three
mile distance. The extent of both reaches almost 30 kms.
Small, evergreen, with picturesque ports, small idyllic bays and huge rocks
full of caves, they attract the interest of more and more tourists. Tourism
and oil of very good quality are the main sources of income of these small
islands. Transport from the port of Corfu is frequent.

It justly gathers, especially during the summer season, an excessively great tourist
interest. Evergreen and beautiful - the Lady of the Seven Islands - as the famous
poet calls it. The island of the many customs and traditions, that the inhabitants
keep alive, awakens memories and recollections.
The picturesque element of the island is visible in every inch of it, giving it an
especially romantic atmosphere. Because of this certain romantic atmosphere that
you meet in every corner of it,the island also occupies a special preference of young
couples who want to go on their honeymoon.
The island offers anything that one can imagine. The natural beauty of the island as
well as the frequent transport, both for the arrival on it as well as within its interior,
make Corfu desirable by great masses of people. The transport network, though of
not so high quality, gives you the opportunity to see a great part of the island. It
has big hotel units, but also small groups of rental rooms with every kind of facility,
furnishing, special sports e.t.c.
At the international airport* which the island has, during the summer period up to
120 flights are carried out every day. Nevertheless, it continues throughout the
year to connect Corfu with the rest of Greece (Athens-Sallonica) with about 8
flights daily by 2 different airline companies.
Via the port,* the island is connected with the rest of Greece (Epirous) with
open/closed ferry-boats,as well as high speed dolphins, every half hour
approximately from 06.00 am till 22.00 pm. Also, via the port, it is regularly
connected - though not daily - with boat itineraries to Italy and Albania.
*The timetables of the itineraries and their frequency are adjusted according to the
season, but generally the above information is valid.
