Unit Question: To what extent does our health depend on technology?
Area of Interaction: Health and Social
Significant Concept: Our health is only as good as our own service
Introduction to the unit
“To what extent does our health depend on technology?” To address the unit question we will complete
an animated video that has the role to display the effect of technology related to our health. This unit is
based on technology. When referring to technology we refer to: “the branch of knowledge that deals
with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the
environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure
science.” 1 More specifically, we are going to analyze the way technology and its daily usage can affect
or disturb the human system, consequently compromising its health. Other to the effects of technology
on human health and the consequences it leads to, it is also significant to consider that no prevention is
used when dealing every day with these technologies.
When focusing on the importance of the technology, we can notice it can link with most aspects of
quotidian life and plays a significant role in the development of all the industries. Technology developed
during time sparking new methods of communication and interaction that are able to cover large
distances. Technology is possible to be compared to a great machine that initially was shaped by the
human gender that used it potentialities, in order to facilitate its existence. In conclusion technology
gained the upper hand on our life, manipulating most of the human industries and social abilities.
It is also possible to link this Unit question with various aspects observed in a typical scholastic situation.
Technology may be compared to a teacher. Technology as a teacher is essential in the growth of a child
due to the fact it teaches him the basis of life that he will remember for all his life. A teacher is helpful
because it is able to understand each individual independently helping him to build his future. On the
other once we grow up we need to be able to develop the teachings we were instructed with and think
with our own heads; going out of the schemes. Similar is technology that gives you an imprint to
understand and follow, but needs to be developed. This is essential, otherwise we remain submitted to
technology unable to think and take decisions by our own.

The most useful aspect of technology regards the tools that it furnishes to society, in order to ease
quotidian life; therefore enhancing the standards of our life.
Throughout this project it will also be significant to focus on an Area Of Interaction. Areas Of Interaction:
“provide the main focus for developing the connections between the disciplines, so that students will
learn to see knowledge as an interrelated, coherent whole.” 2The area of interaction that I will take into
consideration, in this first topic of the year is: health and social. As a year group we are going to take
into consideration this AOI since it may be explored very vastly, taking into consideration:
Physical/Psychological
Sociological
Economic
Legal.

As reported by the website of the IB curriculum: “This area of interaction deals with key aspects of
development leading to complete and healthy lives. It encompasses physical, social and emotional
health and intelligence. The aim is to develop in students a sense of responsibility for their own wellbeing and for their physical and social environment.”3

Guiding questions (I will different questions that will guide my investigation):
My technology: “x-ray”.
Is there a relation between x-ray and health?
Is a technology helpful in diagnosing and curing disease (benefits)?
To what extent may health diseases be linked to technology?
How does my technology function?
Analyze design feature to include or avoid within my project?
How should I present the information on the video?
Hints and techniques I may include in my video, in order to make it more interesting?
What program will I use in order to create my video?

I have personally decided to choose x-ray as the technology I will focus on this project. I decided to
analyse this machinery due to the fact it has been helpful to me, personal, when I have broken my wrist
and arm. X- ray has always intrigued me due to the fact I am not aware to the secondary effects it may
link to. In order to record information on this argument I decided to consult various sources: websites,
videos, newspapers, books, interviews... Below I will report the different information I recorded when
analysing each of the different guiding questions.
My technology “x-ray” and how does it function:
“A relatively high-energy photon having a wavelength in the approximate range from 0.01 to 10
nanometers.”4
“X rays are electromagnetic radiation that differentially penetrates structures within the body
and creates images of these structures on photographic film or a fluorescent screen. These
images are called diagnostic x rays”.5
These electromagnetic radiations have the purpose of detecting irregularities that are present
within an object. These are helpful since these anomalies aren’t visible at the human eye,
however are essential to be discovered due to different results these may implicate.
X- Ray has the ability to penetrate air and soft tissues. These however are absorbed by denser
materials such as: bones. When an x- ray is derived from the body, it consists of positioning the
examined part of the body between plates containing film. The denser the compositions of a
material the greater amount of x-rays are absorbed therefore enabling to form an image on the
plate.
Is there a relation between x-ray and health?
When exposed to this electromagnetic radiation (x-ray), it is essential to adopt safety
precautions that help preventing any health related issues.
Initially it is possible to determine unnecessary exposure to x-ray should be avoided due to the
fact, in determined circumstances it may cause harm at low levels. Radioactive materials
produce ionizing radiations, which are able to break away electrons from atoms sparking the
collapsing of chemical bonds, therefore damaging tissues.

Luca Bandello 11B
In most situations the body is able to repair these types of damage; however, due to specific
causes they may become natural, consequently unreparable. In these last cases cells may
mistake during the reparation process leading to the formation of cancerous cells. 6
Studies suggest that exposure to radiation may not be judged “safe” at any level; due to the fact
it results very difficult to be protected by ionizing radiations. Below I will report a table created
by the website: http://www.epa.gov/radiation/understand/health_effects.html, which reports
the levels of exposure to x-ray and the health effects it may spark.

Is a technology helpful in diagnosing and curing disease (benefits)?
X-ray are a useful technology that were firstly introduced by
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895. They were casually discovered by
the cathode ray generator that projected images far away, they
were first tested on the hand of Röntgen’s wife, detecting bones and
the wedding ring. 7
X rays have important uses and they are commonly used mainly in the diagnostic area. This
wave group has the ability to detect: teeth structure and any anomalies, foreign objects in the
body, bones and their integrity, growth of cells, cancers by using radio therapy destroy them,
kidney stones.
Moreover x-rays are employed by the industries, since they have the ability to inspect: canned
goods set off an alarm, vehicles parts and analyze their functioning, metal castings, rubber
goods, paint tints.
The ambits in which x rays are employed are also others since they have the ability to: show the
patterns/ positioning of atoms, inspect petroleum products, examine luggage transported
around the world, authenticate paintings, and determine the origin of gemstones.
An example of when x-rays were used in order to authenticate paintings was in 1954 when the
painting “Portrait of woman” was attributed to Goya. X-ray images were able to reveal white
zinc on the painting. White zinc was only discovered later, after Goya’s death, therefore
revealing the true identity of the painting. 8

Analyze design feature to include or avoid within my project?
After having encountered some background information regarding x-ray I am going to analyse different
design features that I may include or avoid in my video. I will help my research with the use of a
magazine article and different sites found on the internet.

GOOD:
Information/ ideas are exposed with logic consequence.
Contrast between text and background is clear and helps the reading.
Animated graphics switch off by their selves.
Design is always persistent even if opened from different devices.
Information is well laid out in a simple and organized manner, incorporated with the video.
Loads quickly.
Simple and instructive video techniques.
Include irony within text.
Have high standard resolution and graphics.
Keep the same resolution throughout the video.
The video keeps flowing without being interrupted by text or images which don’t fit.
Throughout the video: voice, speed, font and colours are kept similar. 9

BAD:
Fixed coloured background.
Fixed background image.
Text moving during the video, therefore distracting the reader.
The text isn’t too small, too read.
The text isn’t too big, that fatigues the reading.
Pop up boxes during the video.
Advertising that isn’t related to the page.
Dark shadings and colours that fatigues the reading.
Bright shadings and colours that fatigues the reading.
Constant frames distract the reader’s attention.
Not relevant text in relation to the images.
No focal point on during the animation.
Effects and resolutions that differ from devices from which are opened. 10

In this case the trustworthiness of the design features is hard to determine because the information isn’t
specific and relevant to determined technologies or videos, eventhough it has been acquired by a
technology magazine. This information is excessively general and the advised elements are written from
a determined perspective. This may have some limits, however, most of this information was also
suggested to us from Mr. Mariani and this confirms its validity.
How should I present the information on the video?
Information is essential in my video due to the fact its main role is to inform/instruct on a specific
argument or theme. It is significant to analyze how this text is presented: vocal registrations, videos,
subtitles, miming and acting.
Vocal registrations: consist in the registration of a dialogue/ monologue. The vocal registration is
afterwards directed and inserted as images create or follow a storyboard. 11 This may be created
more effectively throughout a wide range of characteristics: pitch, pattern of vocal cord
vibration, tone quality, intensity…12
Videos: is the most common way to transmit information due to the fact it incorporates
movement and dialogue at the same time. It is efficient due to the fact the audience is able to
visually understand what is explained throughout the dialogue. 13
Subtitles: are secondary forms of explanatory titles which are able to simplify the
dialogue/monologue.14 These are located at the bottom of the video and have the role to set
the scene by explaining what is happening or clarify the dialogues. 15
Miming: is an ancient technique used by the Greek and Romans that focused on emphasizing
the gestures. Generally it is independent from any forms of dialogue and is able to create a
storyline by the use acting skills. 16
Acting: “the art or practice of representing a character on a stage or before cameras”. Acting is
able to represent situation eventhough it is generally accompanied by dialogue; since the two
character on stage talk between each other.17

Hints and techniques I may include in my video, in order to make it more interesting?
This website isn’t designed to suite a specific age group but aims to be comprehensible to all, since it has
the role to identify the various features of technology that are useful to all the society. X-ray are a
medical mechanism that is able to help each member of the society without limitation of age group,
social class, location. As a consequence the video needs to be comprehensible to everybody. By this I
am meaning to use a style that uses simple sentence construction integrated with the use of
sophisticated vocabulary and simple acting techniques. The more specific vocabulary may be explained
with the use of subtitles that are able to help the audience. Moreover the technique of using simple
acting skills and sentence construction is essential because as we have analysed it will enable being
comprehensible to each individual.
“There’s no doubting that video is an incredible medium. It has the power to transport us to other
worlds, feel other peoples’ feelings and can affect our emotions quite dramatically, when done well.
Ultimately, video can move people to action.”18
Videos are able to entertain the audience throughout techniques that should be included in a good
video, however at the same time it shouldn’t contain determined characteristics that loose the attention
of

the

audience.

Business, economics and theory: similarly non-visual at first glance
Statistics, numbers and data: video and data journalism don’t sit side by side
Interviews (yes, really): video is not designed for people sitting down and talking”20
In simpler terms this video would be more effective in the case it is able to follow 5 specific points.
1. Follow credible storylines by using trustworthy acting skills.
2. Represent throughout acting the dialogue themes investigated by the characters.
3. Have a turning point or a main event that creates interest in the reader.
4. Have a purpose, therefore, transmit a message.
5. Don’t be excessively long in terms of time.
In order to create a sophisticated and interesting video I also watched a variety of videos that are able to
visually demonstrate various hints that I may apply to my video. Probably the most useful video I
encountered was on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxCNNUYAezs, and consist in the
opinions of an expert: Kim Miller. Mrs. Miller has a YouTube channel: “How to sell you videos” which is
able to help the creation of a video by teaching and demonstrating different useful abilities. Below I will
report various comments of Kim Miller that I believed as the most helpful and significant.
“When you take a retake you need to change your position within the frame”. (Minute: 0:45).
“One of the one I have talked, within the video, is stepping to the side. So that you aren’t
centered in the frame.” (Minute: 0:56).
“It’s Kind of boring staying at the center of the frame as, I am right now”. (Minute: 1:08).
“When you step to the side you change your angle … creating a much larger canvas I can work
with”. (Minute: 1:17).
“What I suggest is using it for: bullet points, titles, text, images and videos”. (Minute: 1:35).
“Now this does require some more editing skills… but it may be easily done”. (Minute: 1:43)
“One of the fun things you may do is to interact with it”. (Minute: 1:51).
“This way you demonstrate your message to the viewer easily”. (Minute: 2:09).21
Below I will report a picture that indicates whether: “Should you really make the video".

What program will I use in order to create my video?
My personal knowledge on videos and programs that are used in order to create videos is very limited
therefore I decided to have an interview with an expert. This interview has the role to give me a clear
overview on the various programs and which is the most valid and suitable for my video. I decided to
interview Francesco Munafo’, a computer expert that graduated in computer technology. I was able to
be in contact with this expert, due to the fact he is a parent of Lodovico. I had to take this interview
Wednesday 30th October; by phone, due to the fact he was occupied the following days of the week. We
weren’t able to meet because on the Wednesday I was still in the mountains due to the Halloween
vacations.22
Me: What software might be useful to create the product?
•

Dreamweaver (is an easy program and with it you can obtain fairly good results)

•

Weebly (this program is slightly harder to use, however, the results can have higher standards)

Me: What color tonality might be appropriate to create this website?
•

As you are creating a website that is focusing on an important theme, I would recommend you

to use simply white and black creating a simple contrast that doesn’t distract the reader’s attention.

Focusing on different factors
In order to model this project I will need to set a specific target audience that will help me focus on the
content of the project. Moreover it is important to define the language that I will utilize within my
dialogues, consequently, being technique and clear at the same time. The use of the language is
significant due to the fact should be comprehensible at a wide range of audience, consequently
increasing the visitors to the website.
Target audience
My target audience doesn’t have a specific age or social class, due to the fact the problem we are
analyzing affects everybody, without any restrictions. It is possible to predict that audience that would
be more interested is the teen agers groups that are completely linked to social networks and
technological devices. It is not possible to predicted a determined quantity of people that will consult
the website because it will all depend on the effectiveness of advertisement and by the design of the
site.
Major constraints
To complete this video we don’t have major or important constraints that limit our work to achieve a
high standard. Probably we are just limited by the capabilities we have when dealing with the program
we are using to create the video. Researching on the various areas of knowledge it is possible to
minimize other possible limitations.
Criterion
The product I will produce will use a wide range of animation and drama skills and visual effect, as well
as meet all specifications.
Unit of work
To create a video that will help people understand what the effect of technology and how these can be
minimized.

12
Luca Bandello 11B

Design Brief
For this project our aim is to complete an animation, which role is to aware people on a the health
effects of a specific technology. When referring to the main topic we are meaning the principle
question: “To what extent does our health depend on technology?.” We are going to demonstrate the
impact and to what extent the x- ray are involved in the development of these new technological
advantages, moreover I will analyze the way this machinery affects the health. Our project isn’t
prepared to suite a specific target audience; instead, we should try to organize the video with a wide
range of terminology and picture that could be appreciated from everybody. While completing an
exercise regarding such a significant technology in modern day society constraints are an infinite
number. In fact in this project what really is fundamental is our imagination; however it can be limited
majorly form knowledge we have on the capabilities there are on a computer. We as grade 11 don’t
know most of the programs and soft wares that could be useful while accomplishing this project, thanks
to which, instead, we could make it a better piece of work. Another constraint that will surely affect the
quality of our work is definitely time, this is because if we could work on it for more time we could
develop our ideas more deeply and come up also with new ones. The criterions to which this project has
to respond are probably just a few as entertaining and informative. At the contempt, however, it needs
to be: simple, organized and able to spread the message…

Design specification
Limits (define the range of performance): the main limit I am going to impose to me is the fact that the
final project has to be special and differ from the others. To complete this it will necessitate me to use
determined features that will make it original, but at the same time, well laid out and organized. I will
prevent my video from having images of a certain categories: moving images (which transitions that go
over and over distracting the reader), copyrighted images and low quality pictures (pixel dimensions). In
order to prevent my images to have any of these characteristics I will use specific Google image search.
My video also won’t need to present excessive amount of information (but have the ability to well
synthesize complex concepts), because it would confuse the reader that won’t arrive to understand the
main concept. To conclude it should explain ideas with understandable text (not excessively complicated
neither too simple), consequently it will be easily understandable from each reader’s category.

Demands (requirements or features which must be met): Initially what the video is forced to do in order
to reach its task is to: respond to the topic question by, consequently, identifying which the health effect

being short but eye catching in order to be remembered. In conclusion the animation requires
determined content as: the explanation of the health results, the data explaining it and afterwards the
solution that occurs to be adopted in order to, partly solve it.

Wishes (requirements which should be met): Time specifications aren’t fixed yet are important; because
the video needs to be as long as it takes to respond to the main question but without exceeding a length
of 5 minutes making it boring. Under my point of view the font in the short written inserts, used, should
be simple and easy to comprehend as: Times new roman, Arial and Cambria. This is because a difficult to
understand font will make the reader loose attention and focus on the meaning. Rather to images and
their quality I will work on it and try to create sophisticated video will contribute to respond to the main
concept. I will also use a couple of animated picture, moreover including, at the end credits that will
demonstrate the use of: videos, magazines, books, interviews and websites used throughout the
development of the product.

my work, therefore easing the efficiency of my final product.
To testify my work I could also utilize other methods, which will give me different results that I can also
apply to improve my work. For example I could interview people making them talk freely about my
video. I believe that if we don’t force people talking and responding to certain arguments or questions
they can better express their opinions. This will, therefore be useful in a different way than my test table
in which people need to attain to a determined scheme of questions and they will also have the
opportunity to make comments I maybe didn’t mention in my test table.

Evaluating your performance
By analyzing the various aspects of this investigation in a critical manner, various considerations can be
made. Initially it is possible to determine that a wide range of sources have been used in order to
complete the first section. (Book, magazine, internet, interview, video.)This can be interpreted as a
positive feature, even though the found information could have been explored with further detail. I
believe the reliability of the sources used in a project is fundamental in order to be high quality, on this
aspect I really focused my research trying to always use the most trustful source. I also used a wide
range to have a broad view point, in order to well interpret the catastrophe. By using different sources,
in fact, you don’t have a restricted point of view that may affect the quality of your work but a 360º
viewpoint. (Interview, video, website, magazine and book).
Did I struggle in any section or I could have added detail to any section?
The investigation section appeared hard to complete due to the various complications linked with my
technology. Initially I found hard to comprehend the functioning of my technology due to the fact it is
the product of a sophisticated scientific process, I am not familiar with. Moreover I encountered
difficulties when focusing on “features to include/avoid in my project” due to the fact these factors
weren’t specified on any website/ magazine I consulted. In the end I was only able to find a very general
website that only partially suited my requirements and at this stage I believe I may have enriched my
work by adding detail.

19
Luca Bandello 11B
How organized was I?
My work appeared to be well organized and especially in this initial section everything worked out the
way I had planned it. The organization of my work was also consolidated by the creation of deadlines
regarding each section of this stage.
Did I meet all deadlines?
Mr. Mariani imposed to me a single deadline relatively to when our investigation stage should have
been completed. I did meet this deadline; therefore I did complete the investigation section by the date
of delivery. As I also mentioned before I have created also different little deadlines to myself in order to
always keep regularity.
How fast did I work?
The pace I kept throughout my whole investigation was steady and I always have worked gradually not
leaving most of the work to the last day.
How much effort did I put in?
I have really worked hard throughout this section trying really hard to achieve all the requirements. The
different steps of the investigation were completed by using reliable sources that required a lot of
effort, in order to be read and understood.
How could I improve in all of these areas to do even better next time?
Improvements to my work can be suggested to me once this project is over. I can just identify that I
could have focused more on the investigation section that analyzed the effects of my technology also
regarding the economic/social/environmental aspect. Another example in the investigation I had some
doubts was the research I should have accomplished. As x-ray is a broad argument that can be analyzed
in different manners, I wasn’t sure what aspect I should have investigated. Initially I missed out the
section that identified good/ bad design features that I should have included/ avoided in my website.
Once I realized this section was missing I remedied to my error and created this important unit.
In conclusion, I am proud with the quality and quantity of work I achieved, even though; it required from
me an extreme amount of energy, time and ideas.

Design stage

Design 1:
My first design has 6 images boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the
conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). The first box has a large title
that has the ability focus the reader’s attention on the introduction. This is typed by using word art (blue
color) therefore it easily attracts attention by being formal at the meantime. In each section of the
design the logo, of my x-ray company, is present. We are going to create this logo by using paint. This
simple program permits to achieve a good standard by using a large variety of possibilities.
The first story board is rich of action since it bases on a sportive event/ career, consequently leaving
great space to action. The story initiates with the semi-final karate match of a tournament in which the
protagonist hurts himself. Throughout the main body the character is subjected to a treatment based on
x-ray which enables him to recover hence permitting him to play the final of the tournament. In
conclusion the protagonist wins the tournament shocking everyone with is rapid recovery.
In this design I will focus greatly on close up shots due to the fact they are able to emphasize different
essential factors. These close-up shots may help centering the injury, karate moves and diagnosis
important elements within the video. I will also create great emphasis on sound effects that will
characterize the karate match and the programming of the x-ray machines.

Design 2:
My second design has 6 images boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the
conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This second story board won’t
include a title or a logo due to the fact it doesn’t necessitate to be eye-catching since it focuses on the
implications of this technology. The second story board may be identified as an informative design as a
consequence majorly focusing on the text rather than on the action. The story initiates with a patient in
a hospital suffering of a very serious injury. The main body consists in the exemplification of the use of
this technology. The final section instead focuses on the link of x-ray outside of the medical world,
therefore analyzing its implications in modern day life.
In this design I will focus greatly on shots, sound effects and video effects. I will give great importance to
these techniques since they are very useful when creating an informative video. Shots will be varied
including close ups on x-ray machines and long shots during the dialogue sections. Video effects will
have a great importance and I will majorly use fast transitions in order to avoid losing the attention of

23
Luca Bandello 11B
the audience. When referring to fast transitions I mean avoiding fading processes substituting them with
faster processes as “barn doors”. Lastly I will also relay great importance on sound effects which will
also have the ability to keep the reader’s attention. These will be varied with music effects and in most
cases will relay great importance on the key word, consequently making it easier to understand and
more interesting.

Design 3:
The third design as the other two I have already token in consideration has 6 images boxes. It has the
introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not
included in my plan). This design is rich of color hence making it very attractive. This story board has a
good balance between action and dialogue since it bases on the aspect of comedy. In the first box the
protagonist is riding a motorcycle; however, he gets hurt very seriously after having bumped in another
car. Throughout the main body the character is in the hospital and he is treated by an incapable doctor,
this section is rich of humor since the doctor uses strange methods in order to cure the patient. After
25
Luca Bandello 11B
this comical section the patient is able to recover, eventhough the doctor used not standardized
methods.
In this design I will focus mainly on the use of sound effects and video effects. In a comical piece I will
give great importance to these techniques due to the fact they are able to emphasize jokes,
consequently enhancing its objective. Sound effects will have the principal function in this video since
they have the ability to give emphasis on words consequently easing the conduction of amusing
sections. Video effects are varied in a piece like this since they differ depending from the situation. In
situation I which the characters are building to the creation of a joke the video effects slow down. On
the other hand once the joke is revealed these become faster consequently enhancing the meaning.

Design 4:

27

This fourth design is composed by 6 image boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 25), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This design will use
good filming skills due to the basic plot I have created. Also in this case the story board has a good
balance between action and dialogue since it bases on the aspect of comedy. The story initiates with the
main character tripping on the stairs and suffering of a minimal distortion of the ankle. This initial stage
isn’t very clear to the audience due to the fact the protagonist requires going to the hospital eventhough
he had a very simple accident. The story clarifies when the patient arrives in the hospital and is cured by
a very pretty female doctor. As the story develops the audience understands he is in love with this
doctor which remembers of him and sends him back home. The story terminates with a serious injury
suffered by the protagonist which isn’t any more received in the hospital. Also this story bases on the
aspect of comedy linked to an unlikely hospital situation.
The techniques of this design are similar to the ones used in “design 3” due to the fact the category of
video is similar. Also in this video I will focus mainly on the use of sound effects and video effects. This is
because in a comical piece I will give great importance to these techniques as they are able to
emphasize jokes. As I have already specified in the past design sound effects will have the principal
function in this video since they have the ability to give emphasis on words consequently easing the
conduction of amusing sections. Lastly also video effects will be important and be very mixed up. I
decided to mix them up in a confusing way in order to represent the confused emotions of the
protagonist when he is in front of the female doctor. I am not sure if this will result well, consequently if
I decide to use this design I will take many trials in order to see how it best works.

Design 5:
I decided to create an additional storyboard in order to have a wider range of designs I may choose from
when deciding my final product. This fifth, like all the others, is composed by 6 image boxes. It has the
introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not
included in my plan). This design will focus on the moods of the characters since these are subject to
great variations throughout the plot. This video may be classified as an realistic/informative video due to
the fact it represents the uses of x-ray in medicine under the perspective of a doctor. I decided to create
this additional design in order to differentiate the perspective from which the video is analyzed giving an
alternative to the many similar videos to the audience. In this case the story board focuses on the
dialogue since it is an informative video, therefore analyzing deeply x-ray and its uses. The story initiates
with the presentation of the main character to the audience, consequently with a description of the
doctor. The audience portrays this character as a very good doctor passionate about its job and the

30
Luca Bandello 11B
many patients he cures. In the main body of the story patient programs incorrectly the x-ray machine
affecting irreversibly the function of the reproductive organs. The story terminates with this irreversible
difficulty suffered by the patient that the doctor can’t manage. The doctor plays an important role in the
conclusion due to the fact he isn’t able to heal this damage, however, tries his best in helping the patient
psychologically to overcome this difficulty. This story is sad since it doesn’t terminate with a positive
ending; however I do like it because it is realistic.
The techniques of this design are similar to the ones used in “design 3” due to the fact the category of
video is similar. Therefore I will focus greatly on shots, sound effects and video effects. I will give great
importance to these techniques since they are very useful when creating an informative video. Shots will
be varied including close ups on the faces of the characters and long shots during the dialogue sections. I
believe this technique plays an important role because it has the ability to focus on the emotions of the
characters a significant aspect of this storyboard. I will majorly use fast transitions in order to avoid
losing the attention of the audience therefore speeding the pace of the whole video. When referring to
fast transitions I mean avoiding fading processes substituting them with faster processes as “barn
doors”. Lastly I will also focus on sound effects hoping to emphasize many significant aspects within the
video. These will be alternated to music minimizing the dialogue, this is also important in an informative
video therefore not making it boring.

Designs evaluation:
In the tables I have created I compared my various designs to the specification I had imposed to myself
in the initial stage of my project.
Initially it is possible to determine that my first design achieved a good standard due to the fact it has
only three areas of improvement. These mainly regard the fields of organization, length and the use of
data in order to support my results. This first design, however doesn’t stress greatly the aspects related
to health effects with x-ray. As this is a very important feature I believe it’s not considered enough in my
design, therefore if I decide to create video using this story board I will apply some variations. Lastly this
video mainly focuses on shots and the story doesn’t permit to emphasize greatly video and sound
effects consequently being pretty simple.
When I evaluated this second design against the test plan it appeared to have essentially only one area
of improvement, consequently, minimal problems. When analyzing it more deeply, however, I identified
the lack of creativity. Since this story board is informative it may lead boring the audience and this isn’t
my intention. Moreover it doesn’t center on the aspect of action, therefore it sparks a high possibility of
not being interesting. The only features that may help in the development of this storyboard regard the
use of shots and video effects which play a significant role especially in this category of videos.
The third design left me flummoxed. This design has no areas of improvement therefore suites all my
requirements, consequently achieving a high standard. In it still important to analyze that its quality may
be improved throughout the use of video and sound effects which may contribute to accumulating its
excellence. On the other hand these techniques may result in the dispersion of its quality since they may
have a negative effect if they aren’t planned and expended suitably.
The fourth design is abysmal due to the fact it only satisfies my requirements in two areas. I won’t even
evaluate it since it isn’t definitely designed to a standard that will be able to become my product. Also in
this case I will use video and sound effects; however, they won’t be very helpful in order to benefit the
quality of the video.
The additional design I have created “design 5” is a particular storyboard. As I have already specified it is
analyzed by the perspective of the doctor making it unusual and different from many other designs.
When testing it with my test plan it appeared to have three main areas of improvement these mainly
focused on the attractiveness of the storyboard, its duration and how it gives a solution in order to solve
33
Luca Bandello 11B
the problem. These features are essential in a good design for the reason that they mainly regard
aspects that spark the attention of the audience. The length of the video is important because it is
excessively short it isn’t to fulfill the message it has to send while if it is excessively long it ends in boring
the audience. The attractiveness of the poster also has a clear linkage with the interest of the audience
and this aspect needs to be considered genuinely in the design of a poster, especially if it is informative/
realistic. When focusing on the “how it gives a solution in order to solve the problem” this should be
essential in an informative poster, yet this poster doesn’t respond to this requirements, therefore if I
choose to use this poster I will have to apply many adjustments. Lastly the use of shots, video effects
and sound effect play an important role since they have the ability to improve the attractiveness of the
video, therefore decreasing the possibility that the audience gets wearied.

Design selection:
I was very unsure on which design to focus on due to the fact number 1 and 3 were both of a really good
standard. In conclusion I decided to produce the storyboard number three due to the fact it has less
margins of errors as well as it has less areas of improvement when testing it against my initial
requirements. As I have already specified this design is impeccable due to the fact it has a good balance
between action and dialogue, since it includes a riding a motorcycle in the initial section and comedy in
the second section. It is also important to consider that it is able to have informative sections within its
main body and conclusion where it simplifies the uses of x-ray and its health related issues. In order to
rend this video the most interesting and attractive possible I will also focus on creating great contrasts of
colors that will keep the attention of the audience on the video. Lastly I will also focus on the accent of
the doctor and its attitude towards the patient enabling to make it the most pleasurable. For example I
will use the technique of “exaggeration” which enables to be comic without the characteristic to loose
time building up the joke.
I have chosen with accuracy all the particles that will take place in this video in order to make it comical
and informative at the same time, consequently achieving a very good standard.

Performance evaluation:
After having completed this second section of this project it is possible to determine the effort I have
applied to my work. I have definitely given 110% of my abilities and effort, in order to complete this
design section. Initially I may determine that I have created very precise designs that already give an
accurate overview of the plot as a consequence this took a long amount of time. I was able to create this
34
Luca Bandello 11B
throughout the use of flowcharts a useful tool when focusing on the main aspects of a story. Moreover
this process resulted difficult due to my minimal artistic skills; as a consequence I cooperated with
Rebecca which was able to give me advice on drawing skills I should have adopted. Furthermore I
created an additional design, this factor was helpful due to the fact it enabled me to have a wider range
of choices when generating my final product. Additionally I have adopted a new methodology of
evaluation scheme recommended to me by Mr. Mariani: comparing my designs to the test plan. I really
think that this factor has been a very useful apparatus because it permitted me to analyze if the
storyboard was able to suite my initial and most significant requirements.
In conclusion I would like to specify that I was able to give this effort due to the fact I organized my time
wisely throughout this month. This month required from me a great determination due to the fact I had
many deadlines from different subjects however; I have token ICT as a priority because I am intentioned
to achieve very good results. As a consequence I retain myself very satisfied due to the quality and
quantity of work I have produced.

GANTT chart evaluation:
At this stage of my project I completed the GANTT chart. This chart is the first task in my plan stage and
represents a very useful tool. It is advantageous due to the fact it has the ability to organize the tasks I
will develop in this project and analyze the time I will employ in order to complete them.
This chart is organized by representing on the vertical axis (y-axis) the various tasks I will focus on my
project and on the horizontal axis (x-axis) the time I will employ. The vertical axis doesn’t necessitate a
scale due to the fact it represents the tasks, however I decided to include all the tasks I completed
therefore increasing the accuracy. The horizontal axis uses hours as its scale that represents time. I
decided to use this category of scale since it represents a considerably long amount of time. As
consequence minutes would be very precise but at the same time confusing since they would reach a
very high quantity: 2850, therefore creating an incomprehensible graph. On the other hand I may have
used a larger scale as days however this would have greatly lost accuracy, therefore minimizing the
quality of my graph.
The graph I have created includes bars that divide in to colors. I have applied this decision in order to
represent with the blue color the bars that indicate the main stages of the project (plan, create,
evaluate) while with the red color I represent the smaller activities that compose these greater stages
(GANTT chart, GANTT chart evaluation).
Lastly I would like to underline again the importance of the GANTT chart which has the ability to predict
the time I am going to take when completing my assessment. By using this graph I am able to complete
the tasks and organize my time. Moreover thanks to this graph I have a guideline indicating the time I
am going to take when creating my video and therefore work more on some aspects or analyze less in
detail other sections.

Evaluation step by step plan:
In this second section of the plan stage I created a step by step table. This table is another technique
that may be used in order to plan the work that I will need in order to accomplish the creation of my
final product. This planning method differentiates from the GANTT chart, due to the fact it is more
specific and precise on the aspects that it is taking into consideration. The GANTT chart has the ability to
give a clear overview on the work that will be generated, while the step by step plan includes more
dates, precise timings, resources and tools used during the assemblage of the product. Dates play an
important role since they have the ability to fix the stages in the portions of the week, consequently
39
Luca Bandello 11B
improving the organization. Timings are also specified in the GANTT chart, however, in this occasion I
have analyzed them more intensely consequently using minutes as my unit of measure. By using this
planning technique I also focused on the tools and resources I will expend (Internet, Moviemaker,
Youtube, drama techniques) as a consequence giving a complete outline of my work. Lastly I included
descriptions of the various tasks in order to give further precision and being more comfortable when
creating the final product.
Lastly it is possible to determine that this table has a fundamental importance as it permits to organize
the time by which you need to finish each task and begin the following one. It is also helpful since it has
the ability to exhibit aspects of the “create stage” that has to be improved this is enabled by the time
management generated due to the use of this table.

Modification of the design
Throughout the creation and evaluation of my step by step plan various negative factors in relation to
the design of my final product emerged. As a consequence I will apply different variations to the design
of the storyboard I have initially premeditated: length of the video, video effects and animations.
The length of the video I have initially imposed to myself was of min. 5 minutes to max. 7 minutes. After
having optimized the resources of my plan stage I recognized 5 minutes are an excessively short amount
of time, hence I have limited the length of the video to achieve minimum 6 minutes. I took this decision;
therefore the story will have the ability to develop better throughout a longer period of time. After
having taken into consideration this aspect I have had various doubts whether the maximum length of
the video should have become of 8 min. After a long reflection I didn’t mutate this issue due to the fact
it may result being excessively boring to the audience. This amendment that I applied resulted rendering
the video with a supplementary difficulty since I have a shorter margin of time.
Another adaptation I will apply to my product regards animations and video effects. In the design stage I
imposed my project to use mainly short length animations; however after having completed the step by
step plan I assumed also longer animations are important. Since my video is comical I will have to build
up various jokes and afterwards “reveal” the joke. During the process of building up towards the joke I
understood longer animations are important (2 sec.) while when I reveal the joke shorter (0.5 sec.) are
more beneficial. On the other hand video effects should be more constant and be subjected to minor
variations. YouTube videos were essential at this stage due to the fact they were able to visually

40
Luca Bandello 11B
demonstrate the importance of minimizing the use of video effects since they result in distracting the
attention of the audience, therefore aggravating the quality of the video.
In conclusion it is possible to determine that the plan stage was also very helpful since it was able to
make me understand various areas of improvement within the design section, hence improving the final
outcome of my video.

Unit question

  • 1. Luca Bandello 11B Unit Question: To what extent does our health depend on technology? Area of Interaction: Health and Social Significant Concept: Our health is only as good as our own service Introduction to the unit “To what extent does our health depend on technology?” To address the unit question we will complete an animated video that has the role to display the effect of technology related to our health. This unit is based on technology. When referring to technology we refer to: “the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.” 1 More specifically, we are going to analyze the way technology and its daily usage can affect or disturb the human system, consequently compromising its health. Other to the effects of technology on human health and the consequences it leads to, it is also significant to consider that no prevention is used when dealing every day with these technologies. When focusing on the importance of the technology, we can notice it can link with most aspects of quotidian life and plays a significant role in the development of all the industries. Technology developed during time sparking new methods of communication and interaction that are able to cover large distances. Technology is possible to be compared to a great machine that initially was shaped by the human gender that used it potentialities, in order to facilitate its existence. In conclusion technology gained the upper hand on our life, manipulating most of the human industries and social abilities. It is also possible to link this Unit question with various aspects observed in a typical scholastic situation. Technology may be compared to a teacher. Technology as a teacher is essential in the growth of a child due to the fact it teaches him the basis of life that he will remember for all his life. A teacher is helpful because it is able to understand each individual independently helping him to build his future. On the other once we grow up we need to be able to develop the teachings we were instructed with and think with our own heads; going out of the schemes. Similar is technology that gives you an imprint to understand and follow, but needs to be developed. This is essential, otherwise we remain submitted to technology unable to think and take decisions by our own. 1 http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/technology 1
  • 2. Luca Bandello 11B The most useful aspect of technology regards the tools that it furnishes to society, in order to ease quotidian life; therefore enhancing the standards of our life. Throughout this project it will also be significant to focus on an Area Of Interaction. Areas Of Interaction: “provide the main focus for developing the connections between the disciplines, so that students will learn to see knowledge as an interrelated, coherent whole.” 2The area of interaction that I will take into consideration, in this first topic of the year is: health and social. As a year group we are going to take into consideration this AOI since it may be explored very vastly, taking into consideration: Physical/Psychological Sociological Economic Legal. As reported by the website of the IB curriculum: “This area of interaction deals with key aspects of development leading to complete and healthy lives. It encompasses physical, social and emotional health and intelligence. The aim is to develop in students a sense of responsibility for their own wellbeing and for their physical and social environment.”3 Guiding questions (I will different questions that will guide my investigation): My technology: “x-ray”. 2 3 http://www.ibo.org/myp/curriculum/interaction/ http://www.ibo.org/myp/curriculum/interaction/health/index.cfm 2
  • 3. Luca Bandello 11B I have personally decided to choose x-ray as the technology I will focus on this project. I decided to analyse this machinery due to the fact it has been helpful to me, personal, when I have broken my wrist and arm. X- ray has always intrigued me due to the fact I am not aware to the secondary effects it may link to. In order to record information on this argument I decided to consult various sources: websites, videos, newspapers, books, interviews... Below I will report the different information I recorded when analysing each of the different guiding questions. My technology “x-ray” and how does it function: “A relatively high-energy photon having a wavelength in the approximate range from 0.01 to 10 nanometers.”4 “X rays are electromagnetic radiation that differentially penetrates structures within the body and creates images of these structures on photographic film or a fluorescent screen. These images are called diagnostic x rays”.5 These electromagnetic radiations have the purpose of detecting irregularities that are present within an object. These are helpful since these anomalies aren’t visible at the human eye, however are essential to be discovered due to different results these may implicate. X- Ray has the ability to penetrate air and soft tissues. These however are absorbed by denser materials such as: bones. When an x- ray is derived from the body, it consists of positioning the examined part of the body between plates containing film. The denser the compositions of a material the greater amount of x-rays are absorbed therefore enabling to form an image on the plate. Is there a relation between x-ray and health? When exposed to this electromagnetic radiation (x-ray), it is essential to adopt safety precautions that help preventing any health related issues. Initially it is possible to determine unnecessary exposure to x-ray should be avoided due to the fact, in determined circumstances it may cause harm at low levels. Radioactive materials produce ionizing radiations, which are able to break away electrons from atoms sparking the collapsing of chemical bonds, therefore damaging tissues. 4 5 http://www.thefreedictionary.com/x-ray http://www.healthofchildren.com/U-Z/X-Rays.html#ixzz2j7LKDhrw 3
  • 4. Luca Bandello 11B In most situations the body is able to repair these types of damage; however, due to specific causes they may become natural, consequently unreparable. In these last cases cells may mistake during the reparation process leading to the formation of cancerous cells. 6 Studies suggest that exposure to radiation may not be judged “safe” at any level; due to the fact it results very difficult to be protected by ionizing radiations. Below I will report a table created by the website: http://www.epa.gov/radiation/understand/health_effects.html, which reports the levels of exposure to x-ray and the health effects it may spark. Exposure (rem) Health Effect 5-10 changes in blood chemistry 50 nausea 55 fatigue 70 vomiting 75 hair loss 90-100 Diarrea/ hemorrhage 400 possible death 1,000 destruction of intestinal lining internal bleeding (death) 2,000 Time to Onset (without treatment) hours 2-3 weeks within 2 months 1-2 weeks damage to central nervous system loss of consciousness; death 6 minutes hours to days http://www.epa.gov/radiation/understand/health_effects.html 4
  • 5. Luca Bandello 11B Is a technology helpful in diagnosing and curing disease (benefits)? X-ray are a useful technology that were firstly introduced by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895. They were casually discovered by the cathode ray generator that projected images far away, they were first tested on the hand of Röntgen’s wife, detecting bones and the wedding ring. 7 X rays have important uses and they are commonly used mainly in the diagnostic area. This wave group has the ability to detect: teeth structure and any anomalies, foreign objects in the body, bones and their integrity, growth of cells, cancers by using radio therapy destroy them, kidney stones. Moreover x-rays are employed by the industries, since they have the ability to inspect: canned goods set off an alarm, vehicles parts and analyze their functioning, metal castings, rubber goods, paint tints. The ambits in which x rays are employed are also others since they have the ability to: show the patterns/ positioning of atoms, inspect petroleum products, examine luggage transported around the world, authenticate paintings, and determine the origin of gemstones. An example of when x-rays were used in order to authenticate paintings was in 1954 when the painting “Portrait of woman” was attributed to Goya. X-ray images were able to reveal white zinc on the painting. White zinc was only discovered later, after Goya’s death, therefore revealing the true identity of the painting. 8 Analyze design feature to include or avoid within my project? After having encountered some background information regarding x-ray I am going to analyse different design features that I may include or avoid in my video. I will help my research with the use of a magazine article and different sites found on the internet. 7 8 X-ray (The unauthorized Autobiography), Ray Davis 1995 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_forgery 5
  • 6. Luca Bandello 11B GOOD: Information/ ideas are exposed with logic consequence. 9 BAD: Fixed coloured background. Fixed background image. Text moving during the video, therefore distracting the reader. The text isn’t too small, too read. The text isn’t too big, that fatigues the reading. Pop up boxes during the video. Advertising that isn’t related to the page. • 7. Luca Bandello 11B In this case the trustworthiness of the design features is hard to determine because the information isn’t specific and relevant to determined technologies or videos, eventhough it has been acquired by a technology magazine. This information is excessively general and the advised elements are written from a determined perspective. This may have some limits, however, most of this information was also suggested to us from Mr. Mariani and this confirms its validity. How should I present the information on the video? Information is essential in my video due to the fact its main role is to inform/instruct on a specific argument or theme. It is significant to analyze how this text is presented: vocal registrations, videos, subtitles, miming and acting. Vocal registrations: consist in the registration of a dialogue/ monologue. The vocal registration is afterwards directed and inserted as images create or follow a storyboard. 11 This may be created more effectively throughout a wide range of characteristics: pitch, pattern of vocal cord vibration, tone quality, intensity…12 Videos: is the most common way to transmit information due to the fact it incorporates movement and dialogue at the same time. It is efficient due to the fact the audience is able to visually understand what is explained throughout the dialogue. 13 Subtitles: are secondary forms of explanatory titles which are able to simplify the dialogue/monologue.14 These are located at the bottom of the video and have the role to set the scene by explaining what is happening or clarify the dialogues. 15 Miming: is an ancient technique used by the Greek and Romans that focused on emphasizing the gestures. Generally it is independent from any forms of dialogue and is able to create a storyline by the use acting skills. 16 Acting: “the art or practice of representing a character on a stage or before cameras”. Acting is able to represent situation eventhough it is generally accompanied by dialogue; since the two character on stage talk between each other.17 11 Tre Cani: volume , edition: , http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/vocal+register 13 Tre Cani: volume , edition: , 14 http://www.thefreedictionary.com/subtitles 15 Tre Cani: volume , edition: , 16 Tre Cani: volume , edition: , 17 Tre Cani: volume , edition: , 12 7
  • 8. Luca Bandello 11B Hints and techniques I may include in my video, in order to make it more interesting? This website isn’t designed to suite a specific age group but aims to be comprehensible to all, since it has the role to identify the various features of technology that are useful to all the society. X-ray are a medical mechanism that is able to help each member of the society without limitation of age group, social class, location. As a consequence the video needs to be comprehensible to everybody. By this I am meaning to use a style that uses simple sentence construction integrated with the use of sophisticated vocabulary and simple acting techniques. The more specific vocabulary may be explained with the use of subtitles that are able to help the audience. Moreover the technique of using simple acting skills and sentence construction is essential because as we have analysed it will enable being comprehensible to each individual. “There’s no doubting that video is an incredible medium. It has the power to transport us to other worlds, feel other peoples’ feelings and can affect our emotions quite dramatically, when done well. Ultimately, video can move people to action.”18 Videos are able to entertain the audience throughout techniques that should be included in a good video, however at the same time it shouldn’t contain determined characteristics that loose the attention of the audience. The information below is directly acquired by the website: http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/how-to-make-boring-things-interesting-in-onlinevideo-journalism/ “Explosions, fire, sparks and noise Action and movement: every video must involve someone doing something Awe-inspiringly big things like landscapes Amazingly small things that our eyes can’t see – but also anything close-up in general Human stories and emotion – no matter how complex19 Politics and meetings: much of it happens behind closed doors, is polemic and involves little physical movement 18 http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/how-to-make-boring-things-interesting-in-online-videojournalism/ 19 http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/how-to-make-boring-things-interesting-in-online-videojournalism/ 8
  • 9. Luca Bandello 11B Business, economics and theory: similarly non-visual at first glance Statistics, numbers and data: video and data journalism don’t sit side by side Interviews (yes, really): video is not designed for people sitting down and talking”20 In simpler terms this video would be more effective in the case it is able to follow 5 specific points. In order to create a sophisticated and interesting video I also watched a variety of videos that are able to visually demonstrate various hints that I may apply to my video. Probably the most useful video I encountered was on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxCNNUYAezs, and consist in the opinions of an expert: Kim Miller. Mrs. Miller has a YouTube channel: “How to sell you videos” which is able to help the creation of a video by teaching and demonstrating different useful abilities. Below I will report various comments of Kim Miller that I believed as the most helpful and significant. “When you take a retake you need to change your position within the frame”. (Minute: 0:45). “One of the one I have talked, within the video, is stepping to the side. So that you aren’t centered in the frame.” (Minute: 0:56). “It’s Kind of boring staying at the center of the frame as, I am right now”. (Minute: 1:08). “When you step to the side you change your angle … creating a much larger canvas I can work with”. (Minute: 1:17). “What I suggest is using it for: bullet points, titles, text, images and videos”. (Minute: 1:35). “Now this does require some more editing skills… but it may be easily done”. (Minute: 1:43) “One of the fun things you may do is to interact with it”. (Minute: 1:51). “This way you demonstrate your message to the viewer easily”. (Minute: 2:09).21 Below I will report a picture that indicates whether: “Should you really make the video". 20 http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/how-to-make-boring-things-interesting-in-online-videojournalism/ 21 Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxCNNUYAezs (Expert: Kim Miller). 9

  • 11. Luca Bandello 11B What program will I use in order to create my video? My personal knowledge on videos and programs that are used in order to create videos is very limited therefore I decided to have an interview with an expert. This interview has the role to give me a clear overview on the various programs and which is the most valid and suitable for my video. I decided to interview Francesco Munafo’, a computer expert that graduated in computer technology. I was able to be in contact with this expert, due to the fact he is a parent of Lodovico. I had to take this interview Wednesday 30th October; by phone, due to the fact he was occupied the following days of the week. We weren’t able to meet because on the Wednesday I was still in the mountains due to the Halloween vacations.22 Me: What software might be useful to create the product? • Dreamweaver (is an easy program and with it you can obtain fairly good results) • Weebly (this program is slightly harder to use, however, the results can have higher standards) Me: What color tonality might be appropriate to create this website? • As you are creating a website that is focusing on an important theme, I would recommend you to use simply white and black creating a simple contrast that doesn’t distract the reader’s attention. 22 Francesco Munafo’, computer expert (Interview: 30/10/2013) 11
  • 12. Luca Bandello 11B Focusing on different factors In order to model this project I will need to set a specific target audience that will help me focus on the content of the project. Moreover it is important to define the language that I will utilize within my dialogues, consequently, being technique and clear at the same time. The use of the language is significant due to the fact should be comprehensible at a wide range of audience, consequently increasing the visitors to the website. Target audience My target audience doesn’t have a specific age or social class, due to the fact the problem we are analyzing affects everybody, without any restrictions. It is possible to predict that audience that would be more interested is the teen agers groups that are completely linked to social networks and technological devices. It is not possible to predicted a determined quantity of people that will consult the website because it will all depend on the effectiveness of advertisement and by the design of the site. Major constraints To complete this video we don’t have major or important constraints that limit our work to achieve a high standard. Probably we are just limited by the capabilities we have when dealing with the program we are using to create the video. Researching on the various areas of knowledge it is possible to minimize other possible limitations. Criterion The product I will produce will use a wide range of animation and drama skills and visual effect, as well as meet all specifications. Unit of work To create a video that will help people understand what the effect of technology and how these can be minimized. 12
  • 13. Luca Bandello 11B Design Brief For this project our aim is to complete an animation, which role is to aware people on a the health effects of a specific technology. When referring to the main topic we are meaning the principle question: “To what extent does our health depend on technology?.” We are going to demonstrate the impact and to what extent the x- ray are involved in the development of these new technological advantages, moreover I will analyze the way this machinery affects the health. Our project isn’t prepared to suite a specific target audience; instead, we should try to organize the video with a wide range of terminology and picture that could be appreciated from everybody. While completing an exercise regarding such a significant technology in modern day society constraints are an infinite number. In fact in this project what really is fundamental is our imagination; however it can be limited majorly form knowledge we have on the capabilities there are on a computer. We as grade 11 don’t know most of the programs and soft wares that could be useful while accomplishing this project, thanks to which, instead, we could make it a better piece of work. Another constraint that will surely affect the quality of our work is definitely time, this is because if we could work on it for more time we could develop our ideas more deeply and come up also with new ones. The criterions to which this project has to respond are probably just a few as entertaining and informative. At the contempt, however, it needs to be: simple, organized and able to spread the message… Design specification Limits (define the range of performance): the main limit I am going to impose to me is the fact that the final project has to be special and differ from the others. To complete this it will necessitate me to use determined features that will make it original, but at the same time, well laid out and organized. I will prevent my video from having images of a certain categories: moving images (which transitions that go over and over distracting the reader), copyrighted images and low quality pictures (pixel dimensions). In order to prevent my images to have any of these characteristics I will use specific Google image search. My video also won’t need to present excessive amount of information (but have the ability to well synthesize complex concepts), because it would confuse the reader that won’t arrive to understand the main concept. To conclude it should explain ideas with understandable text (not excessively complicated neither too simple), consequently it will be easily understandable from each reader’s category. 13

In conclusion the animation requires determined content as: the explanation of the health results, the data explaining it and afterwards the solution that occurs to be adopted in order to, partly solve it. 14

Wishes (requirements which should be met): Time specifications aren’t fixed yet are important; because the video needs to be as long as it takes to respond to the main question but without exceeding a length of 5 minutes making it boring. Under my point of view the font in the short written inserts, used, should be simple and easy to comprehend as: Times new roman, Arial and Cambria. This is because a difficult to understand font will make the reader loose attention and focus on the meaning. Rather to images and their quality I will work on it and try to create sophisticated video will contribute to respond to the main concept. I will also use a couple of animated picture, moreover including, at the end credits that will demonstrate the use of: videos, magazines, books, interviews and websites used throughout the development of the product. 15
  • 16. Luca Bandello 11B Test Plan This table with which I came up has the role to testify my work. Testifying is important due to the fact will help me by making me understand difference on opinions I will have at different stages of my work. By reporting these opinions and applying them to my work I will be able to create my website and analyze how to suite better requirements people have. To testify my work I could also utilize other methods, which will give me different results that I can also apply to improve my work. For example I could interview people making them talk freely about my video. I believe that if we don’t force people talking and responding to certain arguments or questions they can better express their opinions. This will, therefore be useful in a different way than my test table in which people need to attain to a determined scheme of questions and they will also have the opportunity to make comments I maybe didn’t mention in my test table. • 19. Luca Bandello 11B Questionnaire (computer expert): Question: 1. Does the video complete its role? 2. Is it clear to understand and well organized? 3. Is the acting well integrated with the text? 4. Response: Is the lexicon comprehensible to all age groups? 5. What overall do you think about it? 6. How could I improve my work? Evaluating your performance By analyzing the various aspects of this investigation in a critical manner, various considerations can be made. Initially it is possible to determine that a wide range of sources have been used in order to complete the first section. (Book, magazine, internet, interview, video.)This can be interpreted as a positive feature, even though the found information could have been explored with further detail. I believe the reliability of the sources used in a project is fundamental in order to be high quality, on this aspect I really focused my research trying to always use the most trustful source. I also used a wide range to have a broad view point, in order to well interpret the catastrophe. By using different sources, in fact, you don’t have a restricted point of view that may affect the quality of your work but a 360º viewpoint. (Interview, video, website, magazine and book). Did I struggle in any section or I could have added detail to any section? The investigation section appeared hard to complete due to the various complications linked with my technology. Initially I found hard to comprehend the functioning of my technology due to the fact it is the product of a sophisticated scientific process, I am not familiar with. Moreover I encountered difficulties when focusing on “features to include/avoid in my project” due to the fact these factors weren’t specified on any website/ magazine I consulted. In the end I was only able to find a very general website that only partially suited my requirements and at this stage I believe I may have enriched my work by adding detail. 19
  • 20. Luca Bandello 11B How organized was I? My work appeared to be well organized and especially in this initial section everything worked out the way I had planned it. The organization of my work was also consolidated by the creation of deadlines regarding each section of this stage. Did I meet all deadlines? Mr. Mariani imposed to me a single deadline relatively to when our investigation stage should have been completed. I did meet this deadline; therefore I did complete the investigation section by the date of delivery. As I also mentioned before I have created also different little deadlines to myself in order to always keep regularity. How fast did I work? The pace I kept throughout my whole investigation was steady and I always have worked gradually not leaving most of the work to the last day. How much effort did I put in? I have really worked hard throughout this section trying really hard to achieve all the requirements. The different steps of the investigation were completed by using reliable sources that required a lot of effort, in order to be read and understood. How could I improve in all of these areas to do even better next time? Improvements to my work can be suggested to me once this project is over. I can just identify that I could have focused more on the investigation section that analyzed the effects of my technology also regarding the economic/social/environmental aspect. Another example in the investigation I had some doubts was the research I should have accomplished. As x-ray is a broad argument that can be analyzed in different manners, I wasn’t sure what aspect I should have investigated. Initially I missed out the section that identified good/ bad design features that I should have included/ avoided in my website. Once I realized this section was missing I remedied to my error and created this important unit. In conclusion, I am proud with the quality and quantity of work I achieved, even though; it required from me an extreme amount of energy, time and ideas. Design stage 20
  • 21. Luca Bandello 11B Design 1: My first design has 6 images boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). The first box has a large title that has the ability focus the reader’s attention on the introduction. This is typed by using word art (blue color) therefore it easily attracts attention by being formal at the meantime. In each section of the design the logo, of my x-ray company, is present. We are going to create this logo by using paint. This simple program permits to achieve a good standard by using a large variety of possibilities. The first story board is rich of action since it bases on a sportive event/ career, consequently leaving great space to action. The story initiates with the semi-final karate match of a tournament in which the protagonist hurts himself. Throughout the main body the character is subjected to a treatment based on x-ray which enables him to recover hence permitting him to play the final of the tournament. In conclusion the protagonist wins the tournament shocking everyone with is rapid recovery. In this design I will focus greatly on close up shots due to the fact they are able to emphasize different essential factors. These close-up shots may help centering the injury, karate moves and diagnosis important elements within the video. I will also create great emphasis on sound effects that will characterize the karate match and the programming of the x-ray machines. Question Yes Respond to Partially No the topic question. Short but attractive as well as eye catching. Explain the health effects using data to support my findings. Give a solution in order to partly deal with the health effects. 21

  • 23. Luca Bandello 11B Design 2: My second design has 6 images boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This second story board won’t include a title or a logo due to the fact it doesn’t necessitate to be eye-catching since it focuses on the implications of this technology. The second story board may be identified as an informative design as a consequence majorly focusing on the text rather than on the action. The story initiates with a patient in a hospital suffering of a very serious injury. The main body consists in the exemplification of the use of this technology. The final section instead focuses on the link of x-ray outside of the medical world, therefore analyzing its implications in modern day life. In this design I will focus greatly on shots, sound effects and video effects. I will give great importance to these techniques since they are very useful when creating an informative video. Shots will be varied including close ups on x-ray machines and long shots during the dialogue sections. Video effects will have a great importance and I will majorly use fast transitions in order to avoid losing the attention of 23
  • 24. Luca Bandello 11B the audience. When referring to fast transitions I mean avoiding fading processes substituting them with faster processes as “barn doors”. Lastly I will also relay great importance on sound effects which will also have the ability to keep the reader’s attention. These will be varied with music effects and in most cases will relay great importance on the key word, consequently making it easier to understand and more interesting. Question Yes Respond to Partially No the topic question. Short but attractive as well as eye catching. Explain the health effects using data to support my findings. Give a solution in order to partly deal with the health effects. It should be informative Have a length between 5 and 7 minutes. Have an organized layout/ structure. Relevant to the technology 24
  • 25. Luca Bandello 11B Must clear transmit a message relatively to the use of the technology. Design 3: The third design as the other two I have already token in consideration has 6 images boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This design is rich of color hence making it very attractive. This story board has a good balance between action and dialogue since it bases on the aspect of comedy. In the first box the protagonist is riding a motorcycle; however, he gets hurt very seriously after having bumped in another car. Throughout the main body the character is in the hospital and he is treated by an incapable doctor, this section is rich of humor since the doctor uses strange methods in order to cure the patient. After 25
  • 26. Luca Bandello 11B this comical section the patient is able to recover, eventhough the doctor used not standardized methods. In this design I will focus mainly on the use of sound effects and video effects. In a comical piece I will give great importance to these techniques due to the fact they are able to emphasize jokes, consequently enhancing its objective. Sound effects will have the principal function in this video since they have the ability to give emphasis on words consequently easing the conduction of amusing sections. Video effects are varied in a piece like this since they differ depending from the situation. In situation I which the characters are building to the creation of a joke the video effects slow down. On the other hand once the joke is revealed these become faster consequently enhancing the meaning. Question Yes Respond to Partially No the topic question. Short but attractive as well as eye catching. Explain the health effects using data to support my findings. Give a solution in order to partly deal with the health effects. It should be informative Have a length between 5 and 7 minutes. 26

  • 28. Luca Bandello 11B This fourth design is composed by 6 image boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 25), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This design will use good filming skills due to the basic plot I have created. Also in this case the story board has a good balance between action and dialogue since it bases on the aspect of comedy. The story initiates with the main character tripping on the stairs and suffering of a minimal distortion of the ankle. This initial stage isn’t very clear to the audience due to the fact the protagonist requires going to the hospital eventhough he had a very simple accident. The story clarifies when the patient arrives in the hospital and is cured by a very pretty female doctor. As the story develops the audience understands he is in love with this doctor which remembers of him and sends him back home. The story terminates with a serious injury suffered by the protagonist which isn’t any more received in the hospital. Also this story bases on the aspect of comedy linked to an unlikely hospital situation. The techniques of this design are similar to the ones used in “design 3” due to the fact the category of video is similar. Also in this video I will focus mainly on the use of sound effects and video effects. This is because in a comical piece I will give great importance to these techniques as they are able to emphasize jokes. As I have already specified in the past design sound effects will have the principal function in this video since they have the ability to give emphasis on words consequently easing the conduction of amusing sections. Lastly also video effects will be important and be very mixed up. I decided to mix them up in a confusing way in order to represent the confused emotions of the protagonist when he is in front of the female doctor. I am not sure if this will result well, consequently if I decide to use this design I will take many trials in order to see how it best works. Question Yes Respond to Partially No the topic question. Short but attractive as well as eye catching. Explain the health effects using data to support my findings. 28

  • 30. Luca Bandello 11B Design 5: I decided to create an additional storyboard in order to have a wider range of designs I may choose from when deciding my final product. This fifth, like all the others, is composed by 6 image boxes. It has the introduction (box 1), the main body (page 2-5), the conclusion (page 6) and a credit section (page7, not included in my plan). This design will focus on the moods of the characters since these are subject to great variations throughout the plot. This video may be classified as an realistic/informative video due to the fact it represents the uses of x-ray in medicine under the perspective of a doctor. I decided to create this additional design in order to differentiate the perspective from which the video is analyzed giving an alternative to the many similar videos to the audience. In this case the story board focuses on the dialogue since it is an informative video, therefore analyzing deeply x-ray and its uses. The story initiates with the presentation of the main character to the audience, consequently with a description of the doctor. The audience portrays this character as a very good doctor passionate about its job and the 30
  • 31. Luca Bandello 11B many patients he cures. In the main body of the story patient programs incorrectly the x-ray machine affecting irreversibly the function of the reproductive organs. The story terminates with this irreversible difficulty suffered by the patient that the doctor can’t manage. The doctor plays an important role in the conclusion due to the fact he isn’t able to heal this damage, however, tries his best in helping the patient psychologically to overcome this difficulty. This story is sad since it doesn’t terminate with a positive ending; however I do like it because it is realistic. The techniques of this design are similar to the ones used in “design 3” due to the fact the category of video is similar. Therefore I will focus greatly on shots, sound effects and video effects. I will give great importance to these techniques since they are very useful when creating an informative video. Shots will be varied including close ups on the faces of the characters and long shots during the dialogue sections. I believe this technique plays an important role because it has the ability to focus on the emotions of the characters a significant aspect of this storyboard. I will majorly use fast transitions in order to avoid losing the attention of the audience therefore speeding the pace of the whole video. When referring to fast transitions I mean avoiding fading processes substituting them with faster processes as “barn doors”. Lastly I will also focus on sound effects hoping to emphasize many significant aspects within the video. These will be alternated to music minimizing the dialogue, this is also important in an informative video therefore not making it boring. Question Yes Respond to Partially No the topic question. Short but attractive as well as eye catching. Explain the health effects using data to support my findings. Give a solution in order to partly deal with the health effects. 31
  • 32. Luca Bandello 11B It should be informative Have a length between 5 and 7 minutes. Have an organized layout/ structure. Relevant to the technology Must clear transmit a message relatively to the use of the technology. 32
  • 33. Luca Bandello 11B Designs evaluation: In the tables I have created I compared my various designs to the specification I had imposed to myself in the initial stage of my project. Initially it is possible to determine that my first design achieved a good standard due to the fact it has only three areas of improvement. These mainly regard the fields of organization, length and the use of data in order to support my results. This first design, however doesn’t stress greatly the aspects related to health effects with x-ray. As this is a very important feature I believe it’s not considered enough in my design, therefore if I decide to create video using this story board I will apply some variations. Lastly this video mainly focuses on shots and the story doesn’t permit to emphasize greatly video and sound effects consequently being pretty simple. When I evaluated this second design against the test plan it appeared to have essentially only one area of improvement, consequently, minimal problems. When analyzing it more deeply, however, I identified the lack of creativity. Since this story board is informative it may lead boring the audience and this isn’t my intention. Moreover it doesn’t center on the aspect of action, therefore it sparks a high possibility of not being interesting. The only features that may help in the development of this storyboard regard the use of shots and video effects which play a significant role especially in this category of videos. The third design left me flummoxed. This design has no areas of improvement therefore suites all my requirements, consequently achieving a high standard. In it still important to analyze that its quality may be improved throughout the use of video and sound effects which may contribute to accumulating its excellence. On the other hand these techniques may result in the dispersion of its quality since they may have a negative effect if they aren’t planned and expended suitably. The fourth design is abysmal due to the fact it only satisfies my requirements in two areas. I won’t even evaluate it since it isn’t definitely designed to a standard that will be able to become my product. Also in this case I will use video and sound effects; however, they won’t be very helpful in order to benefit the quality of the video. The additional design I have created “design 5” is a particular storyboard. As I have already specified it is analyzed by the perspective of the doctor making it unusual and different from many other designs. When testing it with my test plan it appeared to have three main areas of improvement these mainly focused on the attractiveness of the storyboard, its duration and how it gives a solution in order to solve 33
  • 34. Luca Bandello 11B the problem. These features are essential in a good design for the reason that they mainly regard aspects that spark the attention of the audience. The length of the video is important because it is excessively short it isn’t to fulfill the message it has to send while if it is excessively long it ends in boring the audience. The attractiveness of the poster also has a clear linkage with the interest of the audience and this aspect needs to be considered genuinely in the design of a poster, especially if it is informative/ realistic. When focusing on the “how it gives a solution in order to solve the problem” this should be essential in an informative poster, yet this poster doesn’t respond to this requirements, therefore if I choose to use this poster I will have to apply many adjustments. Lastly the use of shots, video effects and sound effect play an important role since they have the ability to improve the attractiveness of the video, therefore decreasing the possibility that the audience gets wearied. Design selection: I was very unsure on which design to focus on due to the fact number 1 and 3 were both of a really good standard. In conclusion I decided to produce the storyboard number three due to the fact it has less margins of errors as well as it has less areas of improvement when testing it against my initial requirements. As I have already specified this design is impeccable due to the fact it has a good balance between action and dialogue, since it includes a riding a motorcycle in the initial section and comedy in the second section. It is also important to consider that it is able to have informative sections within its main body and conclusion where it simplifies the uses of x-ray and its health related issues. In order to rend this video the most interesting and attractive possible I will also focus on creating great contrasts of colors that will keep the attention of the audience on the video. Lastly I will also focus on the accent of the doctor and its attitude towards the patient enabling to make it the most pleasurable. For example I will use the technique of “exaggeration” which enables to be comic without the characteristic to loose time building up the joke. I have chosen with accuracy all the particles that will take place in this video in order to make it comical and informative at the same time, consequently achieving a very good standard. Performance evaluation: After having completed this second section of this project it is possible to determine the effort I have applied to my work. I have definitely given 110% of my abilities and effort, in order to complete this design section. Initially I may determine that I have created very precise designs that already give an accurate overview of the plot as a consequence this took a long amount of time. I was able to create this 34
  • 35. Luca Bandello 11B throughout the use of flowcharts a useful tool when focusing on the main aspects of a story. Moreover this process resulted difficult due to my minimal artistic skills; as a consequence I cooperated with Rebecca which was able to give me advice on drawing skills I should have adopted. Furthermore I created an additional design, this factor was helpful due to the fact it enabled me to have a wider range of choices when generating my final product. Additionally I have adopted a new methodology of evaluation scheme recommended to me by Mr. Mariani: comparing my designs to the test plan. I really think that this factor has been a very useful apparatus because it permitted me to analyze if the storyboard was able to suite my initial and most significant requirements. In conclusion I would like to specify that I was able to give this effort due to the fact I organized my time wisely throughout this month. This month required from me a great determination due to the fact I had many deadlines from different subjects however; I have token ICT as a priority because I am intentioned to achieve very good results. As a consequence I retain myself very satisfied due to the quality and quantity of work I have produced. Plan stage 35

  • 37. Luca Bandello 11B GANTT chart evaluation: At this stage of my project I completed the GANTT chart. This chart is the first task in my plan stage and represents a very useful tool. It is advantageous due to the fact it has the ability to organize the tasks I will develop in this project and analyze the time I will employ in order to complete them. This chart is organized by representing on the vertical axis (y-axis) the various tasks I will focus on my project and on the horizontal axis (x-axis) the time I will employ. The vertical axis doesn’t necessitate a scale due to the fact it represents the tasks, however I decided to include all the tasks I completed therefore increasing the accuracy. The horizontal axis uses hours as its scale that represents time. I decided to use this category of scale since it represents a considerably long amount of time. As consequence minutes would be very precise but at the same time confusing since they would reach a very high quantity: 2850, therefore creating an incomprehensible graph. On the other hand I may have used a larger scale as days however this would have greatly lost accuracy, therefore minimizing the quality of my graph. The graph I have created includes bars that divide in to colors. I have applied this decision in order to represent with the blue color the bars that indicate the main stages of the project (plan, create, evaluate) while with the red color I represent the smaller activities that compose these greater stages (GANTT chart, GANTT chart evaluation). Lastly I would like to underline again the importance of the GANTT chart which has the ability to predict the time I am going to take when completing my assessment. By using this graph I am able to complete the tasks and organize my time. Moreover thanks to this graph I have a guideline indicating the time I am going to take when creating my video and therefore work more on some aspects or analyze less in detail other sections. 37

Computer, Moviemaker Evaluation step by step plan: In this second section of the plan stage I created a step by step table. This table is another technique that may be used in order to plan the work that I will need in order to accomplish the creation of my final product. This planning method differentiates from the GANTT chart, due to the fact it is more specific and precise on the aspects that it is taking into consideration. The GANTT chart has the ability to give a clear overview on the work that will be generated, while the step by step plan includes more dates, precise timings, resources and tools used during the assemblage of the product. Dates play an important role since they have the ability to fix the stages in the portions of the week, consequently 39
  • 40. Luca Bandello 11B improving the organization. Timings are also specified in the GANTT chart, however, in this occasion I have analyzed them more intensely consequently using minutes as my unit of measure. By using this planning technique I also focused on the tools and resources I will expend (Internet, Moviemaker, Youtube, drama techniques) as a consequence giving a complete outline of my work. Lastly I included descriptions of the various tasks in order to give further precision and being more comfortable when creating the final product. Lastly it is possible to determine that this table has a fundamental importance as it permits to organize the time by which you need to finish each task and begin the following one. It is also helpful since it has the ability to exhibit aspects of the “create stage” that has to be improved this is enabled by the time management generated due to the use of this table. Modification of the design Throughout the creation and evaluation of my step by step plan various negative factors in relation to the design of my final product emerged. As a consequence I will apply different variations to the design of the storyboard I have initially premeditated: length of the video, video effects and animations. The length of the video I have initially imposed to myself was of min. 5 minutes to max. 7 minutes. After having optimized the resources of my plan stage I recognized 5 minutes are an excessively short amount of time, hence I have limited the length of the video to achieve minimum 6 minutes. I took this decision; therefore the story will have the ability to develop better throughout a longer period of time. After having taken into consideration this aspect I have had various doubts whether the maximum length of the video should have become of 8 min. After a long reflection I didn’t mutate this issue due to the fact it may result being excessively boring to the audience. This amendment that I applied resulted rendering the video with a supplementary difficulty since I have a shorter margin of time. Another adaptation I will apply to my product regards animations and video effects. In the design stage I imposed my project to use mainly short length animations; however after having completed the step by step plan I assumed also longer animations are important. Since my video is comical I will have to build up various jokes and afterwards “reveal” the joke. During the process of building up towards the joke I understood longer animations are important (2 sec.) while when I reveal the joke shorter (0.5 sec.) are more beneficial. On the other hand video effects should be more constant and be subjected to minor variations. YouTube videos were essential at this stage due to the fact they were able to visually 40
  • 41. Luca Bandello 11B demonstrate the importance of minimizing the use of video effects since they result in distracting the attention of the audience, therefore aggravating the quality of the video. In conclusion it is possible to determine that the plan stage was also very helpful since it was able to make me understand various areas of improvement within the design section, hence improving the final outcome of my video. 41
