3. Looking at how ants work overtime to save food for the rainy days is
impressive. It teaches us how to strive hard to secure our future. However,
upon looking closely, there are times that they attack our homes and backyard
and this is no longer amusing. Saving up for the future does not entail raiding
your neighbor’s supplies.
Checkout some interesting facts about ants.
Seeing ant colonies being established in our properties is a major pain. The
good thing is that it can be solved by basic home remedies. You do not have
to shell out hundreds of dollars for synthetic and chemical solutions to banish
the critters for good. Commercial preparations are not only costly; they also
pose hazards to our health and the environment.

4. “Ant Proofing” Stage
The first step in getting rid of ants is to make your area less conducive if not
impossible to be colonized. As you would have heard, prevention is better
than cure. So the best approach in eliminating ants is to stop them from
entering your territory in the first place.
1. Use a mixture of dish soap and water to get rid of aphids – well this article is
really about getting rid of ants, but you have to be aware that they love the sweet
secretion of aphids. This is why you have to treat your outdoor plants to make
them aphid-free. Simply spray the home made solution all over your plants.
2. Cover entry points: Ants have the ability to pass through extremely tight
openings. It is quite difficult to personally monitor your place for all entry points
but be sensitive enough to see the ones that are already being used by a colony.
Once you see these, use basic construction materials to close it down. You can
also opt to use cinnamon because ants avoid this spice.
3. Use deterrents: There are possible entry points that cannot be possibly closed
down because you use it yourself. A good example is the spaces in door jambs.
You can prevent ants from using these as entry points by using deterrents –
substances that drive them away. As mentioned earlier, they hate cinnamon. Salt
and talc are two other substances that keep ants away.
4. Protect the rooms: Using peppermint oil is effective in stopping ants from
entering rooms. Simply spray the oil in room corners and in kitchen cabinets.

5. “Termination” Stage
At one point it will be necessary to get your hands dirty. You have to kill
visible ants. It is an effective way to lower down their number instantly. It is
also critical to get rid of them as soon as possible as they might end up
bringing more members of the colony which would even bring more
problems for you.
5. Eliminate the spies: You might have noticed a lone ant crawling near food
sources. The dude is not lost; it is simply scouting for a possible source. You have
to get rid of it before it comes home to the colony to report its findings. You can
squish the ant using virtually anything that you can lay your hands on.
6. Eliminate the trail: Ants move so quickly that oftentimes you wake up to a trail
that wasn’t there a few hours ago. Don’t despair because you can easily get rid of
this by blocking the point of entry, see step no. 2. You can also use other
deterrents specified above. After this, get rid of the ants in the trail by using a
sponge dipped in soapy water. Wipe them off and wash them down the drain.
7. Kill the trail scent: They might still find a way to track down this particular trail,
so it is best to cover the scent by spraying it with bleach or any all-purpose
cleaning solution.
“Trap Them” Stage
8. Borax balls: Borax gets rid of ants by damaging them internally and externally.
Mix it with sugar or jelly to make some bait. Just be careful in placing the bait
because it is also harmful to pets. Ensure that the container you put the bait in is
stable enough to avoid accidentally knocking it down.
9. Cornmeal: This kills ants because it swells up inside their bodies once they
consume water effectively killing them. You can imagine this as the food inside
your body becoming larger than your body that you will burst from the inside.
You can use this as bait in known ant infested areas.

6. “Keep Them Away” Stage
After killing visible participants in the trails, it is important to follow up with
home remedies that keep the bugs away. Stopping at the killing stage simply
delays their trip to the food source. Other members of the colony will soon
catch up with the trail scent and you’ll end up performing steps in the earlier
stages because you failed to close the process loop.
10. Vinegar: Wipe down areas of ant activity with a 50% vinegar solution. This will
keep the ants away because aside from masking their trail scent, the natural scent
of the solution is proven to drive them away. It also acts as effective mold
deterrent making you hit two birds with one stone.
11. Herbs and spices: There are certain plants that give off repelling scents. Some of
the proven ant repellants are cinnamon, cayenne, mint, cloves, and garlic. Sprinkle
this in trails and suspected entry points to prevent them from returning in your
area.
12. Cucumber: Ants hate its taste plus it is toxic to certain types of fungi that they
feed on. Double whammy. Scatter small bits and its peelings in areas frequented
by the insects to drive them off.
13. Citrus Peels: Similar to cucumber, citrus damages fungi that serves as food for
ants. Thus they are conditioned to stay away from it because nature has taught
them that food is not available where citrus can be detected.
Keep the House Clean
Ants invade areas that are potentially rich sources of food. This is why
keeping your home clean is an important and effective way of preventing
them from sensing your home as a snack mine. It is also a key element in
keeping them away after you have successfully driven them off your
premises.

7. 14. Use airtight containers to store food: This makes it harder if not impossible for
ants to track down the scent of food items. It also gives you an added benefit of
keeping your stock fresher and more organized. Airtight containers also prevent
accidental spills which can lure ants into your home.
15. Sanitize suspect surfaces: Any area where food is consumed and prepared must
be wiped down. This eliminates food traces that attract ants. Tables and
countertops are common susceptible areas. You can use vinegar solution or any
all-purpose cleaner to do this procedure.
16. Maintain a clean sink and wash area: Dirty dishes are another common target
for ants. If you leave them exposed just for a couple hours and a colony is nearby
you’ll be surprised at how quick a takeover can happen. Dispose leftover food in
trash bins; don’t let them wash off the drain. It doesn’t only pose a potential
blockage; it can also be a food source.
17. Protect pet food bowls: Ants take advantage of exposed food bowls. You can
protect it the old fashioned way, place the bowl in a larger container filled with
water. You’ll have a water barrier that will deter the ants from detecting the
potential food stash reserved for your pet.
18. Maintain a cleaning routine: Vacuum, mop, and sweep the floors. Surprisingly
large amounts of food traces accumulate on floors over time. This is a gold mine
for ants. You can stop any future invasion by simply following a consistent
cleaning schedule.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need to vacuum ants in their trail, then make
sure that you wrap up the process by vacuuming talcum powder or diatomaceous earth.
The latter is considered as a bug killer that you can eat. It works by damaging the
exoskeleton resulting to dehydration.
Lastly, empty the vacuum bag to ensure that you have not relocated the ants to a new
home - your vacuum cleaner.

8. Ant Proof the Yard
The next important thing for you to do is to make your yard ant-free or at the
very least less ant-friendly than it naturally is. Ants are a natural part of the
eco-system, so if you leave things as it is, chances are they will soon appear
in your backyard and consequently they will advance towards the inside of
your house where there are plenty of food to collect.
19. Coffee grounds: This is an effective deterrent. Simply sprinkle on your garden
and all around the house to discourage ants from venturing near your place. The
natural scent of coffee repels ants. Word of caution if you own cats, it is also
avoided by felines.
20. Eliminate Aphids: Ants love the secreted fluid of aphids because it is sweet.
Although this is already mentioned in the initial stage, it has to be repeated in this
section as well. Aside from the dish soap solution, you can also use garlic and
pepper spray.
This is composed of ½ cup of chopped hot peppers and ½ cup of chopped garlic. Add hot
water and let it steep for a couple of hours in a sun lighted area. Let it pass trough a sieve
while you pour it on a spray bottle. This spray is dual action because it eliminates aphids
and repels ants as well.

Bonus: Keep the Yard Clean
The last step is more of a preventive measure. This ensures that ants will be
gone for good after you have performed the procedures detailed above.
21. Inspect and collect: Inspect all possible ant sources and treat them with home
made solution like a solution composed of 1/9 part camphor oil and 8/9 denatured
alcohol. Pour this on an ant mound or hill. The solution is toxic to ants and using
alcohol as the solution engine increases the chances of it reaching the queen that is

9. usually hidden deep within the ant colony. Collect all potential ant attractions like
scattered food and food containers. Dispose these items properly.
Summary
I can summarize our ant eliminating regimen into 7 segments namely:
1. Ant proofing your house – this is simply prepping the area to
discourage ants from venturing into it.
2. Termination – hands on elimination of the insects.
3. Trapping – related to termination but is done remotely by using bait.
4. Keeping them away – involves comprehensive and extended use of
deterrents available in your home.
5. Housekeeping – involves keeping the house clean by eliminating all
possible food sources.
6. Ant proofing the outside – eliminate natural ant-luring features in the
garden and eliminate the colony.
7. Keeping the outside clean – similar to housekeeping, this involves
maintaining a clean environment. Use of a mix of ant repelling
remedies is encouraged.
Take note that all solutions provided in this how to guide can be made using
all natural materials that are commonly available in the household. This is
because commercially made chemical compositions can be harsh and as such
pose serious risks to people, animals, and the environment as a whole.
Using home based materials is not only environmentally friendly; it is also
generally safe, and cost effective. Take the coffee ground as an example. You
just throw this away daily, but surprisingly, it can be used as an all natural ant
deterrent in your garden or yard.

10. All natural remedies can be used as it is in the case of citrus peelings, herbs
and spices, and coffee grounds. They can also be used to prepare solutions
like the garlic and pepper spray and the camphor oil/denatured alcohol
solution.
Take note of the warnings that are indicated in some of the home remedies
provided above. Home based materials and preparations are generally safe
but still, there are allergies and other substance sensitivities that you have to
be aware of.
The goal of using home remedies is to cut costs and to save the environment.
If you carelessly employ solutions that can be harmful to you, your family
member, or you pets, then you are effectively defeating the purpose of using
simple yet effective home solutions.
