Afonso Henriques in 12 th century and, since then, it was ruled by several kings. During 800 years, Portugal was a monarchy.
3. No fim do século XIX, o Rei D. Carlos, que governa Portugal, quer dividir África na horizontal para ficar com todas as terras entre Angola e Moçambique (questão do mapa cor-de-rosa) o que não é do agrado dos Ingleses que têm interesse em dividir o continente na vertical. At the end of the 19 th century, D. Carlos, the Portuguese king at the time, claimed sovereignty over the land between Angola and Mozambique and included it in the “Pink Map”. This clashed with the British aspirations to create an empire from Cairo (in Egypt) to Cape Town (in South Africa).
4. Em 1890, Inglaterra lança um Ultimatum a Portugal: as tropas portuguesas têm de ser retiradas de África sob pena de corte de relações entre os dois países. D. Carlos cede o que provoca grande revolta da população portuguesa. O ideal republicano ganha força. In 1890 England issued an Ultimatum which demanded the retreat of Portuguese military forces from those areas. D. Carlos gave in to the ultimatum, which turned out to be a very unpopular decision. The general dissatisfaction allowed the republican ideal to grow in popularity.
5. Em 31 de Janeiro de 1891 , no Porto, os republicanos fazem a primeira tentativa de implantação da República mas é um fracasso. On 31 st January 1891, in Oporto, Republicans made their first attempt to establish a Republic but they didn’t succeed.
6. O descontentamento devido à crise económica, política e social do país leva a manifestações, conspirações e ao assassinato do Rei D. Carlos e do príncipe herdeiro, D. Luís, no dia 1 de Fevereiro de 1908. The economic, political and social crisis led to a general discontent that resulted in demonstrations and conspiracies, which culminated in the assassination of the king, D. Carlos, and the Crown prince, D. Luís, on 1 st February 1908.
7. D. Manuel II, the youngest son of D. Carlos, ascended the throne but he only reigned for 20 months because Republicans were becoming more and more powerful. He was the last King of Portugal. O filho mais novo de D. Carlos, D. Manuel II, sobe ao trono mas reina apenas durante 20 meses uma vez que os republicanos ganham cada vez mais força. Este é, então, o último Rei de Portugal.
8. The “Carbonária”, a secret society which supported the liberal and republican ideals, started the revolution on 4 th October 1910. 10. Na varanda da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, José Relvas faz o discurso de implantação da República apelando ao patriotismo. On the balcony of the Town Hall of Lisbon, José Relvas made a speech announcing the implantation of the Republic and appealed to patriotism.
11. A 1ª República dura apenas 16 anos: de 5 de Outubro de 1910 a 28 de Maio de 1926. Neste período, houve 45 governos e 8 presidentes. The First Republic only lasted for 16 years, from 5 th October 1910 to 28 th May 1926. During this period there were 45 governments and 8 presidents.
