When producing my magazine I took into consideration the typical codes and conventions used by current magazines. At the start of this project I carried out some research to find these codes and conventions and looked at the ones I would like to include in my own magazine.
16243302737485Mast Head:One convention of a magazine that I used in my own was a mast head. This is the title of the magazine. From the magazines I analysed I found that most of them had the mast head along the top. Some used logo’s such as ‘Q’ and ‘XXL’. I found the most effective was the ones that were words going along the top. For this reason I did the same. I think by doing this it attracts the audience and draws them in. From the magazines I analysed I found that the mast heads were in a very large typeface compared to the main body text, this made it stand out drawing the audience to it. I found that mast heads are usually the ‘USP’ so I made mine large so it will stand out. ‘Blender’ and ‘Billboard’ has influenced my own mast head because their font is very large and bold yet looks fun. For this reason I chose a similar font ‘Coolvetica’. I made it bright purple to make it stand out further, grabbing my audience’s attention.
-4508549530374015051435
Costumes and Props:The prop I used in my magazine was a guitar, I think by using this prop it symbolises that the magazine is related to music. This means if people glance at the magazine and see a guitar they will know it is about music making people want to buy it. The genre of this magazine is music – hip hop and mixture, I think my using the guitar it will show the magazine is music related. From the magazine analysis I completed I found most of the models/artists were dressed up in glamorous costumes, this made them look important and classy. Therefore I followed this convention by dressing my model in glamorous clothes (dress and smart top and jeans). I think this represents my artist because she looks like a real singer, the audience will be able to identify this and want to read about her.
Copy/Written Content:I chose to use a mixture of slang and the Queens English as my style of language. I think this reflects my target audience because most teenagers speak a mixture of slang and the Queen’s English in their daily lives. I think this will be better for my target audience because they will enjoy reading it as it is not formal. I used exclamation marks because I think it is appropriate to use for my target audience, by using them it looks less formal making them want to read it. I found that ‘NME’ used similar language style on their ‘Rhianna’ article, this made it more enjoyable to read as I don’t like reading formal articles.
People: Katie - celebsIn my magazine I used the model ‘Katie Robb’ who in this magazine was an artist. Katie is my sister, she is my sister and is 16 years old. I decided to use Katie because she represents my target audience therefore I think it was appropriate to use her. I think in some cases this is a conventional aspect because the magazines I analysed had young females on it, this could be to attract both genders to the magazines. By her being a female, other females may want to be like her and read about her. I also used images of the bands ‘The Wanted’ And ‘Nicole Sherzinger’. These are real life bands and I was able to take good quality photos when I went to a concert. This is very conventional in magazines because this is what draws audiences to the magazine.
Layout of Front Cover, contents page and double page spread:Front cover – When creating my magazine I followed magazine conventions. This was so I can successfully attract my target audience. From analysing magazines I found the most effective ones were the ones that had one main image of the artist. This is because it attracts our full attention. I used some text but not lots because I didn’t want to overwhelm my reader as it is off putting. I think this is a conventional approach because most magazines I analysed had cell lines instead of lots of text. Therefore I used three cell lines. I also found sky lines were good to use on the front cover because it draws the audience to it making them want to buy the magazine. The magazine ‘Billboard’ helped me to decide how to set out the front page because they used a lot of cell lines which was off putting so I decided to use a few. The magazine ‘Blender’ highly influenced my front cover as it is simple yet effective. It used a sky line which draws our attention to it so I used it in my own. They also only used a few cell lines so it wasn’t over crowded so I used this look in my own.Contents Page – I have followed the conventions for a magazine while creating the contents page. I did this because I placed the actual contents along the side of the page. I did not want to challenge this aspect as I think it is effective. On my contents page I used more text then images, this is because unlike the front page it is informative, telling the reader what is inside. This is also a convention I found when analysing magazines.I liked the way ‘Karrang’ and ‘Q’ set out their contents pages so I used this as inspiration. They set their contents along the side and used sub headings to split it up.Double Page Spread - When creating my double page spread I followed magazine conventions. This was so it attracts my target audience and makes it more enjoyable to read/look at. From looking at the magazines I analysed I found a typical aspect was ‘pull quotes’ (like in ‘Q’ magazine) when a section is pulled out to attract attention. I used this as I found it was a good aspect. For this part I used more text then images, this is because it is an article so a lot of text was needed. I followed the convention of when reading an article the interviewer and interviews speech is in bold / regular. I found it was easy to read like this. From the magazines I analysed they did the same. I also found that they used large images of the artist to draw attention to it and make people want to read the article. I liked ‘Q’ magazines double page spread because it used large images and pull quotes so I used this as inspiration.
Font: When choosing my font for the magazine I had to decide what kind of mast head I wanted. From looking at the magazines I analysed I found the most effective mast heads were ‘NME’ and ‘Blender’, this is because they were large and bold creating a dramatic impact drawing the audience in. I wanted the same impact in my magazine, therefore I used a font website called ‘DaFont’. I found the font ‘Coolvetica’ which was similar to the ‘Blender’ magazines font. I manipulated it on paint and Photoshop by changing the colour from black to purple and adjusted the size so it was larger to create an impact. I used this font for the mast head on the front cover and contents page, I also used it on the double page spread’s title, this keeps it consistent throughout the magazine. For the main body text I used ‘Candara’. This is an easy to read font. I used it in a variety of styles (bold and underline) to make certain parts stand out like in the interview to separate the interviewer and interviewee.
467804598298000Mise en scene of your imagesI chose the location for my magazine photo shoot as my back garden. This is because the lighting would be natural meaning it will be good. In my garden I have a brick wall which I thought would be good for the background. This is because it is different and looks interesting. I manipulated the background by changing the contrast and brightness, this made it look more dramatic and make my model stand out. The shot type I used for the front cover was a long shot which is also a slight low angle, this makes her look important and empowered. The long shot allows you to see the background and all of her which is important. I found this gave the audience a feel of her being important and the main focus of the magazine, making them want to buy it. This shot represents the genre of music because it allows the audience to see the guitar. The guitar itself is positioned in the middle of the front cover, this means the audience will see it first and symbolise it is a music genre. The images used on the double page spread were again taken in my back garden, however this time I manipulated them by cutting around them, this is so attention is set on them and not the background. I adjusted contrast and brightness to create a dramatic impact on the audience. It makes the model stand out. Again they were long shots so the audience can see the whole body of the model. I followed conventions because most of the magazines I looked at had manipulated images and some that cut the background away to make the artist stand out. All the images I used reflected the genre of my magazine because most of them had the prop of a guitar in it. I think my images are conventional because the ones I analysed made the artist look empowered so I did by using low angle shots. The lighting used when taking these photos were natural so it was bright and realistic. I used an image as the background (a brick wall) I found that this was different and interesting. I manipulated it by adjusting the contrast to make it stand out. I challenged conventions because most magazines I looked at had a plain coloured background or a main image. I decided to use the brick wall because I used it on the front cover and I wanted it to look consistent, I also think it looks trendy.
How is genre reflected in your magazine:Genre is reflected in my magazine in a few ways. One is the use of props, I used a guitar which symbolises music. I found by using this prop it automatically tells the audience the magazine is music related, and this will draw in audiences. Another is the mast head of the magazine, ‘Up Beat’ sounds like it is music related. Therefore when a person glances at the magazine they will instantly think it is music related making them look at it. The model I used for the magazine reflects the genre because she is glamorous and is holding a guitar sending out signals that she is a singer.
Conclusion:Overall I think my magazine is good, I think I have made good use of images, props, text and the overall look. When creating my magazine I have mainly followed typical conventions of a magazine. This was because I wanted to ensure it would attract and meet the expectations of my target audience. I also wanted it too look as much like a real magazine as possible.
