There are many flavours of CDMI’ve often likened the term CDM in airports to “Cloud” and “Big Data” in the IT industryIdeas and concepts, often misunderstood and meaning many things to different peopleIn our world, CDM isn’t simply A-CDM or FAA NextGenIs it standards?Procedures? No, its about a mindset in airport operations in sharing a common view of the operation
Where does CDM lie in the overall concept of airport ops? There are many siloed systems, each serving part of the picture. In many cases, CDM is often being seen as a separate “stand alone” systemThis only serves to increase the complexity of data sharing and integration
Diagram form page 3.11 – Shaun to tart up, reformat.Much of the CDM process is around the aircraft on the ground. All of this data is typically part of any operational AODB solution managing the aircraft turnaroundCommon data relatedto the aircraftn Aircraft registrationn Aircraft flight statusn Aircraft typen Aircraft parking standn Boarding gaten Turn-round timen Handling agentn TOBTData extracted from arrivingflight informationn Aircraft identificationn ADEPn Inbound flight typen Take off time from outstationn EETn Landing timen Taxi-in timen In-block timeData extracted from departingflight informationn Aircraft identificationn ADESn SIDn Outbound flight typen De-icingn Off-block timen Taxi-out timen Take off timeAircraft related

In this case, the obvious hub of data management becomes the AODBCDM is not a separate platform for data sharing, but should be integral in the data sharing and integration inherent within a modern AODB
The main areas of co-ordination are around TOBT from the airline/ground handlers and the TSAT from ATC.This allows the airport to keep ATC updated on the Departure Planning aspects. However the exchange of TOBT may not always be sufficient? Is there sufficient visibility into those factors that can affect the TOBT. In particular, there are many “sub-milestones” in the ground handling process. These can also be matched to an equal number of sub-processes within the terminal which need to be met.It is interesting that in the first page of the A-CDM implementation guide – there is this quote. However – the terminal or many of the sub processes are not sufficiently highlighted within the rest of the CDM implementation Guide. In particular – I was talking to a pilot friend about how “realistic” they can be when slipping on off blocks time.In many cases – people can be overoptomistic?
Example from a recent airport I’ve been working.Very interested in monitoring the various sub-milestones of the turn around processVery important for Hub operationsDetailed tracking right down to the individual aircraft off-loading timesBecomes important as aircraft continue to grow in size
The logical step from MAOS to Airport to Airport Collaboration in the Cloud
As a Technologist – one of my roles is to attempt to be visionary – and predict the future.Last year I was dealing with passenger tracking
Last years prediction – 100% passenger tracking by Google in 2020. This included “indoor GPS”.
Social Media Integration has brought together all my feeds and data sources into a single integrated view. The features are NOT NEW (always been able to have photographs of contacts)But the usability of crowd sourced and integrated information actually makes these features usable.
The same ideas and approach can be brought to bare on the “airline v airport” mobile app debate.By providing my airline (and airport) account details, then this data can be merged and fused to give me a single integrated view of my journey. This approach also lessens the need for every app to re-invent the wheel. This can be done NOW….but needs agreements on data sharing and standards. Can we create an ACRIS style XML interface for the pax data and airport status. This may also come down to third-party apps. The blockers? Commercials? Who owns the passenger info? Etc.So we need to incentivise this approach
