It is the last release by the band to feature their metalcore sound, although more
clean vocals are featured on the album than their debut album

It contains a more hard rock and classic heavy metal sound than
Avenged Sevenfold's previous two albums, which a predominantly
metalcore sound. The album is also notable for the absence of
screaming vocals.

It’s the last full-length studio album produced by the band before
The Rev's death. Although critical reception to the album was
mixed compared to previous releases, Avenged Sevenfold won the
Kerrang award for Best Album in 2008.

Nightmare is the first Avenged Sevenfold record without James "The Rev"
Sullivan performing drums due to his death; however he wrote some of the
songs before his death so this is therefore the last studio album to which he
contributed, for this reason The Rev's vocals are still on the album as a tribute
to him. Mike Portnoy, from Dream Theater, who performed as the drummer for
the album in his place, also played with the band for all their tours through the
end of 2010
