Introduction
In this presentation we will
show how is the
sustainability in Baghdad
and we will point to the
main aspects which
supported the sustainable
and we will suggest what
should do to maintain and
improve this sustainability.
Background
Baghdad is the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The area of Baghdad is
(2,260 km2 ) The population of Baghdad as of 2011 is approximately
(7,216,040) person , making it the largest city in Iraq the second largest
city in the Arab World (after Cairo, Egypt).

Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century
and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of
its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial,
and intellectual center for the Islamic World. This in addition to housing
several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom) garnered the
city a worldwide reputation as the "Centre of Learning". Throughout
the High Middle Ages ,Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in
the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people.
Social and Economic Importance

Baghdad is one of the most important Social and Trade center in Iraq.
Baghdad contains all denominations of the Iraqi people (Muslims ,
Christians, Sabena, Yazidis). And also a various ethnicities ( Arab and
Kurd). Therefore many of a big companies and Traders come to invest
in Baghdad. Also Baghdad has a lot of tourist places. All these led to
Baghdad receive more than 10,000,000 tourist per year.
Economy
Most of Iraq’s manufacturing, finance, and commerce is concentrated in
and around Baghdad. At least half of the country’s large-scale
manufacturing and much of its smaller manufacturing is located in the
Baghdad governorate. The exception is heavy industry
(petroleum, iron, steel, and petrochemicals), which is situated near the
oil fields in the north (Karkūk) and the south (in Al-Baṣrah and Al-
Zubayr). Most economic activities are owned or controlled by the
government, which both stimulates and monopolizes the country’s
economic activities. War and economic sanctions contributed to the
steady erosion of the city’s economic base beginning in the 1980s.
The government is the city’s principal employer. Hundreds of thousands
of citizens work for the government, directly or indirectly, in the civil
service, in government-run educational institutions, and in government-
owned industrial and commercial enterprises.
Manufacturing

Modern manufacturing began in the 1920s and ’30s, spurred
by the Law for the Encouragement of Industry in 1929. Early
factory production centered on textiles (cotton ginning,
spinning, and weaving), food processing, brick making, and
cigarettes. Beginning in the 1950s, the government used
increased oil revenues to develop manufacturing industries.
Subsequently the city produced a wide variety of consumer
and industrial goods, including processed foods and
beverages, tobacco, textiles, clothes, leather goods, wood
products, furniture, paper and printed material, bricks and
cement, chemicals, plastics, electrical equipment, and metal
and nonmetallic products
FOOD
In Iraq and especially in Baghdad we have many traditional meals . Each part of
Iraq are known special meals ,for instance :
Arbel ( north of iraq ) is known with very delicious yogurt called ( Laban Arbel).
Baghdad has many different meals like ( Dolma . Briani, ).
Also in Albasra south of Iraq has a best fish meals ( there is special way for
cooking fish in Iraq called MASGUF , It is a cooking fish on the wood :
Transportation in Baghdad
The transportation system of Baghdad is complicated
because there is many difficult events forced and prevent
it to get better . That’s why the transportation in baghdad
still same since 50 years ago or more than. The most affect
event is the political situation in Iraq and successive wars .

In general we have a public transportation :
1- train
2- taxi
3- van(14 person or 24 person)
4- bus

and the privet cars……….
Train
Baghdad Central Station is the main train station in the
Baghdad, is located in the Karkh district of Baghdad . The
foundation stone laying in 1948, and was officially opened
in 1952.

Also called as the world station because the idea created
around it be the crossroads between East and West, where
Iran from the east, Syria and Turkey and the Hijaz from the
West

And are going regularly to other Iraqi provinces under the
auspices of the General Company for Iraqi Railways.
Buses and vans

Buses and vans are common way for transport in Baghdad.
There are many bus station in baghdad and any one can
transport from any where to any where . The buses and vans
fees cheep and flexible .
The main problems in transportation in Baghdad

1. Increasing number of
   cars.

2. There no controlling
   for Importation cars.

3. Many checkpoints in
   almost highway in
   baghdad.

4. Old traffic system .
Recommendation

1. Remove all checkpoints in main roads and
   highways.
2. Update the traffic system.
3. Redesign some of the main roads linking
   major commercial areas.
4. Apply requirements and controls on the
   import of cars.
