The Amazing Bodies of
Water in the Philippines
Objectives :
• Describe the major bodies of water in the
  Philippines.

• Recognize that soil , water , rocks , coal and
other fossil fuels are Earth materials.
Game Time!
Mechanics :
• The first person to raise his/her hand after
we say go will be the one who will answer
  the question.

• If the person’s answer is right , he/she will
get plus points for Science class.

• If the person’s answer is wrong , we will
call another student to answer the
  question.
1) How many islands does
  the Philippines have?

Correct answer : 7,107 islands
2) What is the largest lake in
     the Philippines?

Correct answer : LAGUNA DE BAY
3) What waterfall do we use
  for hydro-electric power?

Correct Answer : Maria Cristina Falls
Philippine Bodies of Water

• The north is bordered by the Babuyan
  Channel.
• The west by the South China Sea
• The south by the Celebes Sea.
• The Philippines' eastern coast faces the
  Pacific Ocean.
Philippine Bodies of Water

• Inland lakes and rivers exist within
the islands, formed through time by
  different geologic activities.
What is a bay?

• a large body of water connected to
an ocean or sea formed by an inlet of
land due to the surrounding land
  blocking some waves and often
  reducing winds.
Example of a Bay in
   the Philippines :

• Subic Bay is a bay forming part of
Luzon Sea on the west coast of the
  island of Luzon in Zambales,
  Philippines, about 100 kilometers
  northwest of Manila Bay.
What is a river?
• A river is a natural watercourse usually
freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, a lake,
  a sea, or another river.
• In few cases, a river simply flows into the
ground or dries up completely before reaching
  another body of water.
Example of a River in the
     Philippines :

• The Pasig River (called Ilog Pasig
in Filipino) - is a river in the
  Philippines that connects
Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay.
Example of a River in the
      Philippines :

• Pampanga River (formerly known as Rio Grande de
Pampanga) -is the second largest river in the island of
Luzon, next to Cagayan River and the third largest but
most important river in the Philippines. It is located in
the Central Luzon region and traverses the provinces of
Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac and Quezon.
What is a waterfall?

• A waterfall is a place where water flows over a
vertical drop in the course of a stream or river.

• Waterfalls also occur where meltwater drops
over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf.
Example of a Waterfall
  in the Philippines :

Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall that can
be found in Iligan City. Sometimes called
the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by
a rock at the brink of the waterfall.
What is a sea?

• A sea is a large body of saline water that may
be connected with an ocean or may be a large
saline lake that lacks a natural outlet.
Example of a Sea in the
    Philippines :

Camotes Sea - is a small sea within the Philippine
archipelago, between the Eastern Visayas and the
Central Visayas. It is bordered by the islands of
Leyte to the north and east, Bohol to the south,
and Cebu to the west.
What is a hot spring?

• A hot spring is a spring that is
  produced by the emergence of
  geothermally heated groundwater
  from the Earth's crust.
Example of a Hot Spring
  in the Philippines :

The Tangub Hot Spring can be found in Camiguin.
It is in the sea at normal water level. At low tide,
the warm water comes out between the rocks.
What is a gulf?
• A gulf is a body of water that is
connected to a sea or ocean. There will
  be land partially surrounding the
water, but it is larger than a bay. A gulf
is often a long or large landlocked part
of the sea that opens at a strait.
Example of a Gulf in the
    Philippines :

Davao Gulf is a gulf found in Mindanao in the
Philippines. It has an area of 308,000 hectares.
Davao Gulf cuts into the island of Mindanao from
Philippine Sea. It is surrounded by all four
provinces in the Davao Region.
What is a strait?
• A strait is a narrow, typically
  navigable waterway that connects
  two larger, navigable bodies of
  water.
Example of a Strait in the
     Philippines :

• San Juanico Strait is a narrow strait
in the Philippines. It separates the
  islands of Samar and Leyte.
What is a stream?
• A stream is a body of water with a
current, confined within a bed and
  stream banks.
• A stream is a body of running water
moving to a lower level in a channel
  on land.
Example of a Stream in
   the Philippines :

• Tandawan Stream is a
  stream in Davao, Philippines.
What is a lake?

• A body of relatively still water of
considerable size, localized in a basin,
that is surrounded by land apart
from a river, stream, or other form of
moving water that serves to feed or
  drain the lake.
Example of a Lake in the
    Philippines :

• Laguna de Bay - is the largest lake in the
Philippines located east of Metro Manila
between the provinces of Laguna to the south
  and Rizal to the north.
TAAL LAKE
TAAL LAKE
Taal Lake is found in the
province of Batangas, on the
island of Luzon in the
Philippines.
TAAL LAKE
• Taal Lake was once just an arm of
  Balayan Bay.

• However, after a series of major
eruptions in the 18th century, Taal
Lake's sole connection to the sea
narrowed down into its sole draining
  river, the Pansipit River.
TAAL LAKE
• Several centuries of precipitation
have diluted the lake's once saline
  waters into freshwater.
• Because the lake was until
recently connected to the sea, it is
  home to many endemic species
that have evolved and adapted to
  the desalination of the lake's
  waters.
Examples of species in
        Taal Lake :
 • Harengula Tawilis

a freshwater sardine found exclusively in the
Philippines. It is unique in that it is the only
member of the family Clupeidae that is
known to exist entirely in freshwater.
Examples of species in
      Taal Lake :
• Mullets or Mugilidae

 are distinguished by the presence
of two separate dorsal fins, small
 triangular mouths, and the
absence of a lateral line organ.
TAAL LAKE
• Taal Lake’s soil is Fine Sandy Loam.
TAAL LAKE
• It is the deepest lake in the Philippines
(172 m) and the third largest in area
  (234.2 km2).
• It is a caldera lake, having been formed
partly by the collapse of a large
  volcanic crater and partly by
  subsidence.
Thank you and have a
  wonderful day!
