Editor's Notes
So while the organization is struggling to cut costs, the typical software delivery environment only contributes to the problem of skyrocketing IT costs. The average software delivery organization manages hundreds or thousands of projects across multiple teams, using a diverse set tools. Most organizations have team environments that have grown organically in upredictable ways, with multiple methods and technologies in place to manage requirements, work items, source code, project plans and test assets across different projects and teams. Multiple tools would not be a problem if the tools could share data and workflows. The fact is, most software delivery tools were never designed to share information across the software lifecycle. The vast majority of these solutions keep their data locked up behind proprietary APIs, with little to no project visibility. Each tool -- comes with its own UI - Web and desktop presentations of views and tasks Logic – Workflow, process, search, query, scale, security and collaboration Storage – Availability, traceability Privacy, backup/archive Resulting in... Brittle integrations Silos everywhere: Functional, geographic and organizational High cost to maintain and administer Proprietary API's So while the software delivery organization is struggling to gain end-to-end project visibility, the typical software delivery environment only reinforces existing silos of people, process and information.
We at IBM believe that what's needed is a fresh approach to solving the core problem of tool integration across the software lifecycle -- a software development platform. The KEY to a platform is that it replaces one vendor's view of the world (even our own view) with an open and extensible view that enables any vendor to participate. One that delivers real-time, transparent access to project data, risks and progress across the preferred environment that YOU choose -- including tools from IBM, competitors and open-source alternatives.
