If your home has ever suffered from flooding, then you will know first hand the problems that it causes and the damage that it does. This document will give you some advice on what to do in a flood and how you can work with your insurance company to get your claim settled.
3. Advice for making a flood insurance claim
1. Get in contact with your insurance company straight
away. They can arrange for someone to come out and
assess the damage there and then and can also make
sure that you have somewhere to stay and arrange for
emergency repairs. Your insurance company should have
a 24 hour helpline.
2. Make emergency repairs and keep the receipts so that
you can claim back the costs within your insurance claim.
3. Find somewhere to stay if you cannot return to your
property. Your insurance company should cover this up
to a limit, so make sure that you talk this over with
them...before checking into the Ritz.
4. Fully comprehensive car insurance will cover the costs of
any damage done to a motor vehicle swept up in the
flooding to your home.
5. Turn off mains supplies for water and electricity, but if
this is too dangerous, then leave it to the professionals
and obviously do not use electrical appliances during a
flood.
6. Disinfect your property before returning to it. Flood
water picks up sewage and anything and everything in
it’s path so ensure that all traces have been eradicated
from your home before returning.
7. Don’t rush to decorate as a property needs time to dry
out, so keep windows and doors open to help air the
property.
