1. NOTES Conjunctions & Interjections
Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word that joins a word or groups of words together.
There are two types of conjunctions: Coordinating & Correlating
Coordinating Conjunctions are: and, or, for, nor, but, yet, so
EX I ordered pizza, breadsticks, and root beer.
EX You can have two or three slices of pizza.
EX I like you, but I hate your sister.
Correlating Conjunctions are pairs of words that connect words used in the same way. These are sets of
conjunctions separated by words, either subjects or objects.
Correlating Conjunctions both…and, either…or, not only…but also, neither…nor, whether…or
EX Their eye lenses are not only long, but also cylindrical.
EX Either you clean your room, or you are not going to the party.
EXNot only are you a trouble maker, but also a psychopath.
Interjections
An interjection is a word or short phrase used to express emotion.
The interjection is usually separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma, or an exclamation point.
EX Oh, I’m so hungry!
EX Wow! That dinosaur is huge!
EX No, you cannot stay out until one in the morning.
EX Yes, you may have ice cream for dessert.
Interjections can also come in the middle of the sentence. When this happens, they are separated from the rest of
the sentence by commas.
EX I like horror movies, however, they give me bad dreams.
