What is “Social Media”?
What does “Social Media” mean to you?
Social Media: Defined
 Social Media is “a group of internet-based
applications that build on the ideological and
technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows
the creation and exchange of user-generated
    content.”
 Kaplan, Andreas M.; Michael Haenlein (2010). "Users of the world, unite! The challenges and
        opportunities of Social Media“

 Social media is the use of web-based and mobile
technologies to turn communication into interactive
    dialogue.
     Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media
Social Media is:
 Online exchange of media through connections
     Media = Information
       Text:
            Articles, Documents, Blogs
 Images: Photos, Art, Graphics, Cartoons
       Sounds: Music, Speech
 Video: User or professionally generated

 Content is limited only by what can be digitized
     Information transferred via “Platforms”
Social Media versus Traditional Media
The biggest difference is:
Now you are a part of the commentary.
Media Distinction

Social Media Traditional/Industrial Media
 Social Networks  Newspaper
 LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace  New York Times, Wall Street
 Blogs Journal, USA Today, The
     WordPress, Blogger, LiveJournal Oregonian
 Wikis  Magazines
        Wikipedia, Wetpaint, Wikispaces
    
                                                     Atlantic, Time, Portland Monthly,
 Work Collaboration National Geographic
        Google Docs, Central Desktop, Dropbox
    
                                                 Television
 Photo/Video Sharing
                                                     Fox, CBS, ABC
     YouTube, Flickr, Photobucket
 Review and Opinion  Film
 Yelp, Customer Lobby  Universal, Pixar, 20th Century Fox
Media Distinction Continued
 In some cases, Social Media is a direct replacement
    for Industrial Media:
 YouTube,Hulu, Vimeo vs. Television and Film
 Pandora Radio, Slacker vs. AM/FM Radio and CD/MP3

     Wikipedia vs. Encyclopedia Brittanica

 In some cases it is something completely new that
has never been represented in Traditional Media:
 Facebook, Yelp, WordPress, MeetUp, Second Life

Why should I care?
What’s the big deal with social media, anyway?

Social Media as a Job Search Tool
Because, after all, that’s why we’re here, right?
Social Media as a Job Search Tool
 Social Media IS:  Social Media is NOT:
A way to build and A replacement for
      maintain relationships other job search
 A “web” of tools and methods
resources to connect  The “only” solution for
      and share information finding work
 A means to connect  All you need to do to
quickly to others find a job
 A way to learn about  An excuse to not get
      employment out and meet people
Using facebook
 Primarily a “Social Network”
 Not intended or designed for “Professional” connections
      or employment
 Use to stay in touch with your social connections
 Primary value is in communication and sharing
 Hands down, highest risk/lowest reward
     Time wasters
     Distractions

     Addictive
Using LinkedIn
 Create a free profile – like an online resume
 Be sure that it is complete, correct and comprehensive
 This can take a lot of time! Keep it up to date

 Search out people you know
 Connect with people who have connections
 Join groups and get involved
 This is where LinkedIn starts to produce results
Using Twitter
 Twitter is an online service that lets you broadcast
    short messages to your "followers“
 Twitter lets you specify which users you want to
follow so you can read their messages in one place
 Twitter is designed to work on a mobile phone as
    well as on a computer
 All Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters
 Comments can be public or private
 Twitter is free

Effectively Leveraging Social Media

 The goal of any networking opportunity should be:
 face-to-face time with the contact
 strengthening the connection with that person

 Not something to use in isolation
 Social media sites can be very useful in quickly
gathering online connections; the trick is to take the
next step and land an in-person meeting with the
    contact.
Pitfalls of Social Media
As great as all this can be, there are some risks to consider.
Wasting Time Has Never Been Easier

 Top ways to waste time online
     Non-productive conversation
     Pictures

     Videos

     Draining connections

 Zynga facebook games:
How to Protect Yourself
 Everything you post online is potentially viewable
by a present or future employer
     Privacy Settings

 Don’t over-restrict
 Choose connections
 Search yourself
