When volunteers consumed 20 grams of glucose, their blood glucose increased as the glucose was absorbed into the bloodstream from the GI tract, causing hyperglycemia. The increased blood glucose stimulates the beta cells of the pancreas, which acts as the receptor to regulate blood glucose levels.
