3.  THE GERUND
This looks exactly the same as a present participle,
and for this reason it is now common to call both
forms
 'the -ing form'. However it is useful to understand
the difference between the two. The gerund
always has the same function as a noun (although
it looks like a verb), so it can be used:
 a. as the subject of the sentence:
 Eating junk food is bad for your health.
 Hunting tigers is dangerous.
 Flying makes me nervous.
 Smoking costs a lot of money.

4.  Gerund used as a subject
Complete the sentences with the gerund
form of the verbs in parentheses.
 (cook) is one of her hobbies.
 (cycle) is fun.
 (Get) a good job is not easy.
 (Find) a parking space is quite difficult in
this area.
 (drive) becomes more and more
expensive.

5.  Cooking is one of her hobbies.
 Cycling is fun.
 Getting a good job is not easy.
 Finding a parking space is quite difficult in this area.
 Driving becomes more and more expensive.
 No smoking in this area.
 Working overtime is quite common in this company.
 Eating fruits and vegetables is good for your health.

 Learning about other cultures makes people more
tolerant.
