The last two years spurred institutions to explore new digital solutions and pushed students to learn virtually to an extent they never expected. Now the metaverse is emerging as a natural evolution that reconciles how the internet is designed today with what we will demand from it going forward. The Unreal MakingSynthetic, Authentic The Unreal tracks how our environments are increasingly filled with machines that are passably human. Constituents are coming face-to-face with bad actors using this technology—from deepfakes to bots and more —igniting a growing concern. Ensuring authenticity and building trust may be the biggest hurdle for institutions looking to grow their use of AI. Programmable World OurPlanet,Personalized The Programmable World tracks how technology is being threaded through our physical environments in increasingly sophisticated ways. It projects how the convergence of 5G, ambient computing, augmented reality, smart materials, and more are paving the way for institutions to reshape how they interact with the physical world. Computing The Impossible NewMachines, NewPossibilities Computing the Impossible– The outer limit of what is computationally possible is being disrupted as a new class of machines emerges. Quantum, biologically-inspired, and high- performance computers are each allowing institutions to answer questions, solve problems, and conduct research that once seemed impossible. Our four technology trends for 2022
  8. 8. Copyright © 2022 Accenture. All rights reserved. Accenture and its logo are registered trademarks of Accenture Technology Vision 2022 | accenture.com/technologyvision #TechVision 8 Establishing a foundation of scalable technology Many CIOs are uncertain about which applications of the Metaverse will gain traction at an institutional scale. However, what is certain is that waiting for use-cases of technologies like 5G and quantum computing to become the norm would lead universities to fall behind and ultimately build up their tech debt. How might institutions begin to think about building a foundation for the Metaverse? Data & Computing Power Investing in the groundwork data capacity and infrastructure will be a powerful foundation to accommodate both volume and size of future applications. At first, your institution will likely show a large divide between eager and reluctant groups. Novelty won’t work for everyone, but it’s essential to strike a balance—without a dose of originality, the innovation you want to attract won’t be impressed by old news. Setting standards for matters like security, privacy, and identity will allow your institution to comprehend the current state of the Metaverse. The principles you determine now will allow you to navigate through the unexpected, and whatever the future has in store. Security & Responsibility Readiness Valley

The team’s goal is to develop an all-inclusive system that will serve researchers across a wide range of scholarly disciplines and computer skills, according to Honggao Liu, executive director of Texas A&M’s High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) and the project’s principal investigator.
These disciplines include artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, health population informatics, genomics and bioinformatics, human and agricultural life sciences, oil-and-gas simulations, new-materials design, climate modeling, molecular dynamics, quantum-computing architectures, imaging, smart and connected societies, geosciences and quantum chemistry.
“The ACES system will support the national research community through coordination systems supported by the NSF,” Liu said. “In this way, the ACES system will provide invaluable support to cutting-edge projects across a broad spectrum of research disciplines in the nation. ACES will also leverage HPRC’s efforts that promote science and broaden participation in computing at the K-12, collegiate and professional levels to have a transformative impact nationally by focusing on training, education and outreach.”
