2. 1. Who did you work with and how did you manage the
tasks between you? Explain how you organised your
time and schedules. What issues came up with time
management? What problems did you come up against?
How did you deal with these? What were your
strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would
you do differently next time?
Overview
Clarrisa and Alex were who I worked with in my group
Clarrisa was behind the camera where Alex and I were in front
of it
Stayed behind after school to film our scene from 2:40 to 4:00
Problems
When editing we all never had a free lesson at the same time.
This resulted in using up more of our time during our media lesson
Strengths
Our management of organisation
Weaknesses
> Our time management
3. 2. How did you plan your sequence?
What process did you use?
Made a detailed storyboard which included
information such as:
Camera shots e.g. Close up, mid long shot
Camera movements e.g. Panning, tilts
Order of shots
After creating the story board we rehearsed it
and timed it so when we edited we knew how long
it needed to be.
This was good as it helped us when filming to
be fully organised.
4. 3. What technology did you use to complete the
task, and how did you use it? What did you learn about
using the cameras? Here you can also refer to the
discussions we have had in class recently about digital
cameras.
Camera used was the Cannon HD Cameras. Tri pod was also
used. This helped to:
Keep the camera was steady
To make camera movements like tilt and panning.
Things learnt
Count to five before filming – or first few seconds could
get cut off
Let camera focus before filming
For editing we used Adobe Premiere and we learned to
make sure we don't overlap clips otherwise it could get
deleted
5. 4. What factors did you have to take
into account when planning, shooting and
editing?
Planning
Considered the amount of space we would have
Had to be realistic in terms of how we were going to film
a certain shot.
Shooting
Considered the ‘rule of thirds’ so the screen was always
evenly filled out according to the different shots.
Considered continuity and how realistic it looks –
therefore we repeated everything every time we had a new
shot.
Editing
> Considered how long each shot should be as we did not
want to spend too much time on one specific shot
6. 5. How successful was your sequence?
Please identify what worked well, and
with hindsight, what would you
improve/do differently?
What was successful?
The continuity was successful
Our shots between takes worked well
It was timed nicely
Action and reaction was very clear
Improvements
It could have been improved if there was a close up of
the invitation when Alex was taking it out of his pocket
I would have had an close up of my face after Alex had
hugged me to show the reaction to the action
7. 6. What have you learnt from completing the
task? Discuss time management skills, group work
skills, organisational skills and technical skills of
production
Time Management skills
Have improved significantly as now working quicker
Still feel as though it could be improved in other ways like how
quickly we set up a camera and how long we spend filming/editing
one particular shot
Organisational and technical skills
Knew exactly what, where and how to do our task as had a well
laid out storyboard
Was confident with the editing as previously had a practice
session
Group work skills
All had and equal chance in editing
Were listening to each others feedback and ideas
Were making important decisions together
8. 7. Post production - What did you learn about the editing
process? How did you make decisions while editing? How did
you plan your time to complete the editing task? What were
your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would you
do differently next time?
Editing – some useful tools that I learned how to use were the cut tool
and zooming in and out
Used trail and error when making decisions to see what worked and
what didn't work
Planned time – first two lessons we would edit beginning and middle and
last lesson would edit the end
Strengths
Knew exactly what scene to we were going to be editing on each day
so it did not waste time
Weakness
Spent too much time of certain shots which meant that we were
rushing to edit it towards the end
Next time?
Would not spend so much time watching scene back, would just carry
on until the end
Notas do Editor
I worked with Clarrisa and Alex. Between us we managed the tasks equally as when we were editing we all took turns to edit a part of our scene and when we were filming Clarrisa was in front of the camera where Alex and I were behind it . When organising our time we all agreed that after school was the best time to film as were all free however we only had from 2:40 to 4:00 to film however we managed to get it finished in time but when it came to editing, a problem which arose was that we all did not have a free period at the same time for extra time to edit therefore we just used our time during our media lesson. Some of the strengths were working with my group when both filming and editing without making any serious mistakes, Some weaknesses was our time management as at times we were found rushing our scenes to get it finished therefore next time I would work quicker and spend an equal time on each shot.
The way in which we planned our sequence was by firstly making a storyboard which had all the different shots we were going to use and the order we were going to use them in. This was very detailed and it included what in particular was going to happen. For example, the shots were going to use like when the two characters greeted each other. Next we rehearsed our sceneso when it came to actually filming it we were fully organised and knew exactly what we needed to be doing. Also while we were rehearsing we timed it so when it came to editing we knew roughly how long it needed to be.
The technology that we used for the filming was the cannon HD cameras with a tri pod. The way we used it was by placing the camera on top the tri pod and using it to pan and tilt the camera in different directions as well as keeping the camera steady. Some of the things in which I had learned about the cameras were that you had to count to five before you started filming otherwise part of the scene could get cut off and to let it focus before you press record otherwise the scene would begin blurry. Furthermore the program technology we used to edit our scene was Adobe Premiere. One thing that I learnt when using this program that you had to make sure that you didn't overlap any clips otherwise they would be deleted.
Some of the factors in which we took into account when planning was the amount of space we would have had as at the time we did not have a location of where we were going to be filming or how much space we had therefore we had to be realistic regarding about where we was going to be walking in terms of the space that we had. When shooting our scene one factor that we had taken into account was our continuity and how naturalistic our scene looked, therefore every take and every shot we took, we repeated our whole scene exactly the same when filming it in a different angle so it looked more natural when it came to editing out scene. Another factor when shooting was the rule of thirds so that there was always a good amount of space between the characters for example, over the shoulder shot, we considered that the shoulder would have 1/3 of screen where the face would have 2/3 of the screen. Finally when editing some of the factors that we considered was the length of our scène and how long each shot was going to be. For example how long Alex would be walking down the hall.
I think our sequence was very successful as our continuity was very smooth as well as our shots between takes. I also think the scene as a whole flowed nicely. Another thing that worked well was the over the shoulder shots during the conversation because it was timed nicely and the action/reaction was clear. However it could have been improved if there was a close up of the invitation when Alex was taking it out of his pocket so the audience could also see what Alex was looking at also I would have had an close up of my face after Alex had hugged meto show the reaction to the action if it was done differently.
From completing this task I have learnt many things such as all the camera techniques such as close ups, mid long shots.etc as well as editing techniques such as cut, fade in and out. My time management skills have improved significantly through completing this task however I still feel as though it could be improved in other ways like how quickly we set up a camera and how long we spend filming/editing one particular shot. On the other hand I feel that my organisational skills were on point as we knew exactly what, where and how to do our task including technical skills of production as we were well prepared. As a group we worked extremely well as we all had and equal chance in editing and were listening to each others feedback and ideas which helped us when filming and editing as well as making decisions together.
During our post production I had learned that the editing process was very timely and that you had to be very specific with the details of your scene for example the order of the scene. I also learned how to use the tools effectively such as the cut tool and how zooming in and out helps with the proximity of scenes in which needed to be cut. The decisions in which we made was done by watching the scene and using trail and error to see what worked and what didn’t work. The way that we planned the time was by deciding that during our first 2 lessons we would concentrate on editing on the beginning and middle of the scene and on our third lesson we would focus on editing the last end scene. The strengths in this area was that we knew exactly what scenes we were going to be editing therefore we could just get on with it however a weakness was that we did not realise how much time it would take therefore towards the end we were rushing. If I were to do it differently next time, I would not spend as much time watching the scene every time we had made a change and just to carry on and make changes if needed at the end.
