2. Introduction
Solar energy is a renewable energy
Solar energy is abundant and free of cost
Solar energy can be used for car propulsion in different ways:-
(1) Directly
Solar Cars
(2) Indirectly
Hybrid Solar Vehicle
3. Solar cars
Solar car consists of:
1) Solar panel
2) Peak power tracker
3) Battery pack
4) Motor controller
5) Motor
4. 1. Solar panel: The solar panels are Photovoltaic Panels(PV panels).PV panels
consists of PV cells. The PV cells converts the solar energy to electric energy.
2. Peak Power Tracker: When a load is directly connected to the solar panel the
operating point of the panel will rarely be at peak power. The impedance seen
by the panel, the operating point can be moved towards peak power point
through peak power tracker.
3. Battery pack: Electric energy is stored in batteries. Solar electricity can also go
directly to the motor when the car is running.
4. Motor controller: Motor controllers smoothly and efficiently control power to the
motor. Speed control is by a normal accelerator pedal.
5. Motor: Motor uses rare-earth magnets and a brushless design gear changing is
done electronically in the motor. A 5hp motor can weigh less than 5KG.
6. Hybrid solar vehicle
Hybrid solar vehicle consists of:
1. Electric Motor
2. Electric Generator
3. Electric Node
4. Vehicle Management Unit
5. Electronic Control Unit
6. On-board diagnostics
7. Internal Combustion Engine
7. • The hybrid solar vehicle can be implemented by installing in-wheel electric
motors on the rear wheels(in case of front wheel drive) and by the integration
of PV panels on the roof.
• For HSV, the original architecture of HEV is upgraded additional battery pack
and a control unit to be faced with the engine management system (vehicle
Management Unit) by the OBD port.
• VMU(vehicle Management Unit):
generates control logics compatible with typical drive styles of the users.
It receives the data from OBD gate and battery (SOC system).
-> OBD systems gives access to the status of various vehicle subsystem.
->SOC gives the current state of a battery in use.
The VMU, engine management system drives the in-wheel motors by properly
acting on the electric node EN.
10. DISADVANTAGES
Solar energy is intermittent.
Requires inverter to produce AC current.
Requires a relatively large amount of open space.
Requires storage for continuous round-the-clock use.
11. conclusion
Fossil fuels are largely used for car propulsion, which generates co₂ by combustion and
leads to global warming.
The Kyoto protocol, has taken decision for renewable energy.
The integration of solar energy would reduce battery recharging time for HEVehicles.
The adoption of moving roofs for parking phases and use of solar panel on windows and
lateral sides would enhance solar contribution in Solar cars.
Thus HSV and Solar Cars are both energy and eco-friendly.
