Editor's Notes

  1. Thank you for your time and attention. This presentation is going to highlight a key aspect of the Xerox Office Services value proposition. As you may know, many businesses around the world have begun to look very seriously at the impact that their businesses have on the environment, the community, the people they employ, the vendors they do business with. You’ve heard it called by names such Corporate Citizenship, Eco-responsibility, and Sustainability. It is the recognition that every business has to be part of the solution and not part of the problem when it comes to managing the human, economic, and environmental resources they use to conduct their operations.
  2. First, let’s define what we mean by Sustainability. According to the World Commission on the Environment and Development, sustainability is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The term takes into account environmental and social performance in addition to financial performance – the “triple bottom line”. “Sustainability” is a term that is gaining popularity and is often used synonymously with “green”, “citizenship” and “corporate social responsibility”.
  3. Xerox’s Stated Approach to Sustainability: Our Word Sustainability is not just a nice-to-do at Xerox. It’s about valuing our employees and communities, preserving our environment, and returning value to our shareholders….now and for the future. Xerox views it not as a cost of doing business, but as a way of doing business. Our Work Society: Our commitment to our employees shows in our actions: valuing diversity and inclusiveness, rewarding good performance, offering excellent opportunities for learning and development, providing a safe and healthy work environment and achieving the right work/life balance. We strive to take a leadership role in local communities as well as in the global community . This work is supported by the volunteer efforts of Xerox employees and support of the Xerox Foundation. Environmental: Our responsibility focuses on four areas where we can have the most impact: Protect our Climate, Forests, Air and Water. Prevent and Manage Waste. Economy: Our culture values Xerox both as a profit-making enterprise and an institution that strives to be a positive force in the world around us. Our World Attaining our goals for sustainability means going beyond what we can control directly. We engage our suppliers, our customers, our people and other important stakeholders to extend our reach and magnify our impact.
  4. Xerox focused on environmental performance and sustainability long before it was popular to do so. – In the 1980s, we were the first company to introduce power-down features in our equipment to save energy, and the first to make two-sided printing a standard on our systems, significantly reducing paper use. – We are the world’s experts on the safety of toner, having launched comprehensive health studies over 25 years ago, which are still in place today. – Xerox adopted our Environmental Policy in 1991. Its commitment and principles guide us today. – In the 1990s Xerox pioneered remanufacturing for office equipment and helped shape the EPA’s ENERGY STAR program for imaging equipment. – Xerox was an early adopter of ISO 14001, an international standard for environmental management – all of Xerox’s major manufacturing sites were certified to ISO 14001 in 1997, within one year of that standard’s development. We continue to use innovation and leadership to drive environmental performance through our value chain. – Carbon emissions: Xerox was among the first technology companies to set a company-wide target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We joined the U.S. EPA Climate Leaders program in 2003 and subsequently set a target to reduce total GHG emissions by 10% from 2002 to 2012. Xerox achieved our first goal six years early and then announced an even more aggressive goal – a 25% reduction in total GHG emissions from 2002 to 2012. In 2007, Xerox was the first high technology company to join the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a consortium of companies and environmental groups advocating for regulatory controls of carbon emissions in the U.S. – Paper: Xerox has shown leadership in advancing responsible use of paper. We invented two-sided printing and our digital document management tools leads to efficient use of paper. In 2003, we were among the first to issue comprehensive environmental requirements to our paper suppliers. In 2006, we began a three-year partnership with The Nature Conservancy to advance forest management practices and improve sustainable forest management programs. In 2007, we launched the first mechanical paper for digital applications – High Yield Business Paper – which uses half the trees of conventional paper. We’re now launching our first papers that are certified to the world’s most recognized sustainable management certification program – the Forest Stewardship Council. – Our recent innovations: EA toner, solid ink printing, mechanical paper for digital applications (High Yield Business Paper) and erasable/reusable paper. – Leading the Digital Office Revolution: Each generation of Xerox digital office equipment is more energy efficient than the last and has a smaller footprint, saving material resources. Xerox’s digital multifunction systems enable energy reduction compared to the use of several single-function products. Additionally, the Xerox Office Services solution offers significant reduction in the environmental footprint by optimizing the devices used within an organization.
  5. Clean air, fresh water, and arable soil are the fundamentals of life on earth. With mounting evidence of climate change upon us and ever increasing demands for energy, every corporation has a responsibility to protect and preserve the world’s natural resources. It starts by understanding the impact each business has on the ecosystem, and then establishing programs and initiatives to reduce that impact. Xerox has identified four areas where we can and will make a difference: Climate change and energy Biodiversity and the world’s forests Reduce toxins and heavy metals Waste prevention and management With a commitment that is decades long, let’s take a look at each of these areas to see how Xerox has — and will continue to — use technology and partnerships to meet these environmental challenges.
  6. Self Explanatory Slide
  7. For example, Xerox joined the USEPA Climate Leaders program in 2003, pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% from a 2002 base year. Xerox exceeded that goal in 2006 — reducing carbon emissions by 18%. Xerox also partners with the California Climate Action Registry and the US Climate Action Partnership to advance the efforts to reduce the risk of climate change.
  8. Our commitment to sustainable development reaches all the way to our investments in research and technology. Two examples are the recent introduction of emulsion aggregation toner, and solid ink. Both of these Xerox inventions are designed to significantly reduce waste…while enhancing the quality of the printed output. EA toner is a breakthrough process for producing color and black toners. Its small and spherical shape means less toner mass per page, les toner waste and less energy to produce and print. Solid ink technology eliminates cartridges altogether, conserving raw materials and generating 90% less waste than a comparable laser printer.
  9. Xerox’s office solutions cut costs and reduce the burden to the natural environment. By adopting Xerox technology and solutions, Xerox customers benefit and the environment benefits. Mitigate the risks of Climate Change by cutting energy use. Preserve the World’s Forests through efficient and responsible paper use Enable a Waste Free approach with Xerox remanufacturing, reuse and recycling
  10. We run the most comprehensive supplies return program in the industry…the Green World Alliance…which enables our customers to return millions of cartridges and toner containers each year. And we make it easy with prepaid postage labels…in all more than 90% of the materials are either reused or recycled.
  11. We have a critical role to play in this area. As the inventors of xerography, we are responsible for a great deal of paper use…so our responsibility extends all the way up the value chain to responsible forest management and to the end user level where we must minimize solid waste and help customers reduce and recycle paper. Xerox managed print services can enable efficient use of paper. Duplex productivity can reduce paper consumption significantly. And digital document processes – such as print-on-demand and distribute-then-print – reduces paper use and reduces waste. Let’s add it up… typical 150,000 person enterprise may use 27,000 tons of paper each year. Reducing paper use by 30% will yield both dollar savings and environmental benefits – preserving 194,000 trees / year. Recycled content is another way Xerox reduces the environmental impact of its papers. Our recycled papers use post-consumer waste in place of new pulp.
  12. 04/29/10 As part of our strategy, Xerox is also deeply involved with the Nature Conservancy. The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. We’re investing $1 million in a 3-year partnership to strengthen and advance practices used to conserve the world’s forests. The partnership has specific goals to provide lasting solutions for environmental sustainability for Xerox and its suppliers and to demonstrate measurable progress in protecting forests.
  13. Xerox has a long standing history in sustainability, but what does that really mean for our clients? The Xerox Sustainability Value Proposition now has five planks. Xerox reduces energy consumption through not only ENERGY STAR programs, but also by optimizing office document management infrastructure. We reduce paper by enabling two sided printing and electronic management and with new technologies like High Yield Paper. Xerox reduces waste through its Green Alliance program which allows clients to return supplies for reuse or recycle and with technology like solid ink printing We protect indoor air quality by tightly controlling emissions for Xerox products And finally, we can now share our thought leadership and innovation in the area of sustainability. Xerox can help clients measure the relative environmental benefit of the optimized office infrastructure process in all four previous categories!
