Most Current Rapid Reading Misconception Myth #5 About Speed Reading Courses Even alleged experts still get it wrong! I hear about these speed-reading courses. Are they worth spending money on?  This is a quote from a recent book, Reading Smart, Nicholas Reid Schaffzin, published by The Princeton Review. Mr. Schaffzin is a 1990 graduate of Stanford and in in the Writing Division at Columbia University. “ It depends, They spend most of their time increasing the speed of your fixation and saccades – similar to the way the first few chapters of this book has. These courses have all sorts of machines and workbooks, and reading passages. And, when you’re done, your speed should be up. But, there's a downside – your comprehension will go down . There's no way around the relationship. The faster you read, the less detail you notice. The slower you read the more detail you notice .” IN AVERAGE SR COURSE THIS MAY BE TRUE… W/TRE THIS NOT TRUE

  1. To facilitate taking notes each participant will be provided with a Handout which includes copies of all the PowerPoint slides, space for taking notes, a Guide to Silent Fluent Reading and some supplemental materials. Feel free to ask questions during the presentation. Our goal is to transmit information and part of doing so successfully is that the participants should feel free to ask questions. Also, as part of the Workshop, each participant will receive a personal copy of The Reader’s Edge Alsop, at the end of the Workshop we’ll ask you to complete an Evaluation Form that will provide Laura Franiak and The Literacy Company how we’ve done and how we can improve e our presentation.

  3. As we have researched years and years of material relating the realm of reading education we have put together some great quotes about reading and the impact it has on everyone. - This is just one of our favorites.
  4. The Reader’s Edge is a solution to teaching how to read better and faster with improved comprehension and recall.
  5. The first part of this Workshop demonstrates: The NEED to change A vision off your future state A level of confidence that individuals of all ages have the ability to change The second part of this Workshop, when we go through The Reader’s Edge, you will have a roadmap of how to go about mastering Silent Reading Skills.
  6. Reader’s of all ages can minimally double their reading speeds, with improved comprehension and recall. In the future TLC will provide a testing protocol so that users can qualify to become Certified Silent Fluent Reader’s
  7. Discuss the physiology of reading, i.e., one only reads when the eye is not moving - saccades, etc. Matthew effect – “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer” 90% of the vocabulary comes from what one reads from the fourth grade on The more one reads the more their vocabulary increases, the more they ENJOY reading, the more their schema (prior knowledge) and they more they read and the more they enjoy reading. It’s a positive domino effect The less one reads the less their vocabulary increases, the more they DO NOT ENJOY reading, the less their schema (prior knowledge) increases and the less they read and the less they enjoy reading. It’s a NEGATIVE domino effect AZ projects the number of prison beds they may need by measuring reading levels in the 4 th grade
  8. Most people believe that good readers fixate on each letter in a word in order to comprehend what is being read. The article below clearly demonstrates that the brain can easily decode and comprehend the message of the text without having each letter of a word in the correct order. This is possible because our brain is wired to search for and understand the meaning of what is read rather than being concerned with the exact letter placement of a word. Fixating on every letter while reading only serves to drastically reduce your reading speed. This example demonstrates that you can read the left hand text because your are looking at words, not letters. Fluent reading and good comprehension is possible without processing every letter!
  9. Most people believe that it is easier to concentrate when reading slowly. Actually, concentration is not a matter of willpower but a matter of reading at the proper speed. It is hard to concentrate when things are happening slower than the speed of your thoughts. Most readers believe that reading faster will significantly lower their ability to comprehend well. The truth is that good comprehension only depends on whether you can extract and retain the information you read. Some people read fast and comprehend well; others read slowly and comprehend poorly. What we do know today is that Fluent Reading, effective and efficient speed reading, has a direct relationship to increased comprehension.
  10. Most people believe they enjoy what they are reading when they read slowly. Quite the opposite is true! Fluent readers have a better appreciation of what they read. Reading effectively and efficiently allows the words to lift off the page and create their own movie in their mind. This “movie making” allows the reader to “own” the content and easily recall it when necessary. The average readers (180 – 220 WPM) rereads up to 67% of what they read to regain comprehension. That's why fluent readers typically enjoy the book version more than the actual movie!
  11. Introduce the concept of Prime Words as a Patent Pending innovation which TLC has developed to facilitate teaching how to see, read and process more than one word at a time with each eye fixation. Highlight the three main characteristics, i.e., immediately recognizable, do not need decoding and the eye does not fixate on them

  14. This is where most people are without training in silent reading skills. Without further training they past their life reading, but armed only with Oral Reading Skills. The Red pat indicates that at the best their level of reading will remain at the low level indicated by the Red path… but probably will tend to decline over time because reading for such a person will always be a chore rather than a pleasure. With training in Silent Reading Skills the path for reading will follow the green path. The next section of this Workshop will introduce you to Silent Reading Skills as taught by The Reader's Edge.
