The Internet of Things (IoT) is taking over home appliances and is likely to be integrated into every other appliance in the near future. Whether embedded in TVs, thermostats or vacuum cleaners, smart appliances facilitate our everyday tasks, and this concept can be extended to the construction site to improve construction processes. In particular, technical developments in the field of Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) could enable construction companies to track information from individual elements in a building in an active way. In short, beacon technology allows mobile devices to listen for signals from beacons devices and react accordingly, e.g. by delivering a contextual content to users based on location. Such technology would enable workers to walk through a building and receive information on tasks to be solved, and their corresponding delegates and deadlines, within independent areas of a building during the construction phase. Moreover, it would deliver information on which tools, and their corresponding location, are to be used for a given task. From a prefabrication perspective, embedded beacon devices could deliver information on the properties of construction elements produced elsewhere. From a management perspective, construction managers would have a live broadcast of the position of workers and the activities they are performing within the construction site. Altogether, the combination of information from people, equipment, building elements and indoor positioning would help optimise construction as a whole, enhancing people’s ability to work better, smarter and more efficiently.
