  2. 2. What is a Gerund? The gerund is one of the non-personal forms of the verb, applied to establish an action in time within an operation It is formed from the verb stem together with the ending “-ing” (translated into Spanish as “-ando”, “-endo”, “-indo”), For Example: Analyzing [Analyze-Ing: The root is the verb and, complying with the gerund rule, the -ing is added] Writing [Write-Ing: In this case, it fulfills other gerund rules to be able to adapt the gerund "-ing"] Reading [Read-Ing: Here, like the first, it is simpler to fix the gerund to the infinitive verb]
  3. 3. It is the most basic form of verbs, they are written with the form of "to + verb in infinitive”. It can be used as an action or as an object. Just as the gerunds fulfill an objective established in the sentence. For Example To analize the problems is a good solution [Here it was used as a Verb, explaining a action in infinitive] I am need relaxed to write a history [Here is used as verb and explain a action in the sentece] It is easy to understand [Here it was used as an object and you can also see how it was used as an answer to a question] What is a Infinitive Verb?
  4. 4. Some Examples: Gerund 1. She is reading her new book in her room. 2. It is raining, Why do not we stay here? 3. My daughter is drawing in the kitchen. 4. I am walking at this moment, I call you later. 5. She is speaking with her boyfriend. Infinitive verb 1. I decided not to go to London. 2. He asked me not to be late. 3. I am calling to ask you about dad. 4. To understand statistics, that is our aim. 5. To know her is to love her.
  5. 5. GRAMATICAL RULES •Both can be used as verbs or as objects, it is common to use the infinitive as the subject while the gerund is used as a verb: -He asked me not to be late. (The Infinitive Verb is used as Object while that the Gerund is used as a verb) -She is reading her new book in her room. •In certain cases, the meaning may change depending on how the verb is used
  6. 6. •The infinitive verb is used after adjectives: -He was surprised to eat in the Kitchen. -Nice to meet you •You can only use the gerund after prepositions: - She is really good at playing the guitar. - I everyday read a book before going to home GRAMATICAL RULES
  7. 7. •En gerundios, -ing se agrega cuando: •Cuando termine la última letra en "e", quite esa letra y coloque la-ing •Cuando las ultimas letras son "consonante, vocal, consonante", se repite la ultima letra y se agrega –ing: -Stop+ing=stopping -Plan+ing=planning •Cuando la ultima letra sea una consonante, se agrega –ing: -Cry+ing=crying -Walk+ing=walking GRAMATICAL RULES
